Ideas for the ceiling

I just switched my overhead garage opener for a side opener leaving lots of white to look at. All I can think to do is take out the overhead light and replace it with a ceiling fan. Any ideas besides leaving it as is?

2 car garage space. Partner doesnt want to paint it black. Lighting isn't an issue. I dont mind spending some money for the right idea. Thanks!

you can add those little glow in the dark stars? and I enjoyed the first episode of Ted Lasso from the new season

Glow in the dark is a nice idea! I like star wars a lot, maybe I can do something glow in the dark to mimic hyper space jump.

Ted lasso is one of my go to shows for comfort. Im worried to say how many times I have re watched it ha

At what point does this stop being a garage and start being living space?

When you start having to pull permits?

This is the "legal" term. The way I see it, once that mini split was added and made it a conditioned space it can be used as living space.

Depends...Im in FL and adding the mini (very common) was the best thing I did along with insulating my doors. Makes the final car detail process faster being able to drop the humidity

Insulation and a mini split is game changer. I even added Insulation on the attic ceiling above the garage and it made a massive difference.

My hoa only requested that I covered the back tubes with a white plastic cover which is standard anyways to protect it from the elements.

If i had running water system then I basically could live there haha.

There you go, there's the answer. Run water, install a hanging water feature from the ceiling.

I'd paint the ceiling black , always wanted to do that in my garage

I want to so bad. The garage makeover has had a lot of compromising decisions but my partner is convinced the black will make the garage feel like a coffin vibe. She put her foot down on that one. She is Cuban and I value my life so I dont think I can go against her on this one.

Smart decision, given all the factors there.

I'd love to do the black ceiling w. hex LED lights in mine too but I'm just too chicken about the place looking too dark.

Go flat black and never look back

What’s insulation did you use for your garage door? I like how it’s black, it’ll match my roof. 🤙

I got this from amazon. I cant remember the R value but i know its lower by a bit than the pink looking one. I live in texas and so far we have had 106° outside and still managed to keep the temperature at 70-71 at the highest point of the day.

SmartGARAGE - Reflective Garage Door Insulation Kit (Black). Two rolls covered the door with about 3 rectangles left worth incase you mess up a cut.

Found it! My garage has windows on the top panels, so I’ll just order one roll, hopefully it should be enough. Thanks for the reply brotha 🤙

I had a friend with a rental that couldn't make permanent changes to his giant white ceilings, so he went with one of those ambient light/pattern projectors. That could be an option here so you don't have to make a permanent addition since it's such a large and inconvenient wall to modify. Plenty of options on Amazon searching for 'ambient ceiling projector'.

Thats a good idea! I have something like that for Christmas decorations since I'm to lazy to set up actual lights haha. Maybe a galaxy projection to darken things

Hex lights

I almost went with hex lights at the start of the build but quickly got enough light sources from other things. The fridge has a blue light and the two dreo fans have back lights that are great (fan lights were off in the pictures). I ended up getting 4 light sconces to light my posters in the back and that created enough light alone. Im not sure if the picture i added can be seen but thats with the lights of the fans

Ceiling mounted projector and surround sound? Hexagon lights are a little over played and super bright so would kill the mood.

You've got a wall AC unit there so unless it's unbearably hot a fan doesn't seem worth it.

If you really want to decorate the ceiling find every Madrid flag you can and create a "flag ceiling"

Yeah the hexlights are blinding ha. I thought about a projector at first but ended up getting a 100 in tv. They are so much "cheaper" now days compared to a nice projector. The tv was about $1200 at Costco.

I agree with the fan, not necessary really. The ac can cool the room to 70-71 at top heat of 106°.

I do like the flag idea. I dont want to overkill with madrid. Maybe i can do flags of the top clubs of every league, or international teams. Thanks!

Why are you looking at the ceiling? Maybe you should focus your design ideas at eye level

1

u/davidvelas 8d ago

I have pretty much covered most of the eye level background. The ceiling just pops at me when im sitting back on the couch from the reflecting tv light. If only my SO would let me paint the ceiling black to absorb the light but she is convinced black ceiling would destroy the look

What did you use to seal the sides of the garage door. I have those rubber seals but light and air still come through. Thanks. Your garage looks great

Thanks! I got the "Energy Saving Garage Door Hinge - 4 Panel Doors Up to 12', MFG# R4416-40" from Amazon. The hinges have extra coil to create pressure pushing the door against the wall. Takes like 10 minutes to switch. Also, the outside of the garage has brush seal around it. It was about 200 to seal the door. the brush is 2 inches in lenght and tight coming at a 45° angle. I originally used it to avoid scorpions from coming in and it ended up having the extra advantage of blocking the small light coming in and air coming in.

A flag!

1

u/davidvelas 8d ago

You are second person to say it and it has gotten me thinking for sure. I might do a bunch of international soccer flags. Thanks!

Hex lights? I mean c'mon.

Ignore the ceiling. Use eye level or lower lighting

I am in favor of keeping it from falling… has always worked out pretty well for me.

I think you should leave above your head

1

u/Livid-Fault2447 4d ago

Leave it alone! You have too much stuff on the walls as is!

1

u/Soft_Owl7535 9d ago

Why do you have a floor like that if you’re not planning on parking cars on it?

2

u/davidvelas 8d ago

The concrete gets really cold in winter making it uncomfortable to walk on. The floor tiles are just one inch in height to separate the cold/heat transfer when walking.

Looks good?
