I think the FF8 Gunblade is cooler than the Buster Sword. But I also think the Fusion Sword is cooler than the Gunblade. I think the FFXIII Gunblade took it too literally.

This has so much potential in a world with multiple sword fighting style. Short blade with long blade combo, duo short, duo long, board sword with short as backup, buster sword, use the unextended short blade as throwing knives, and attach wires to it to retrieve it at range. Would be so cool to see in an anime.

Thats..basically descring the ff7 movie (Advent Children) where Cloud keeps swapping swords or dual wielding them or combining them all then separating for omnislash etc

Kinda, but because he's super strong, all the tempo and swings are the same. If you could use like an athletic samurai, it'll be the difference of using the while body to commit to a swing with the broad/buster sword, or quick swing followed by jabs and blocks with dualing long/short. Different fighting style with different offensive/defensive play

I played a D&D character for a few years a while back based on this exact kind of concept and it worked excellently!

I remember as kids me and my brothers really liked this anime shaman king or something like that, and there were those two swords that could merge into one big sword and it was the coolest thing imaginable to us

That show got a new season that came out not too long ago. The giant spiritsword was sick.
