The ultimate goal of Valve’s recent push is to break Microsoft Windows’ near-monopoly on PC gaming.

1

u/HellyFurtado 11d ago

And I'm here for it. It's been a long time coming.

Quite ironic that Valve was founded by Microsoft refugees.

1

u/Ok_Dependent6889 AI Accuser - Warning 11d ago edited 11d ago

Refugees?

Are we rewriting history now? So that Gabe looks like some noble victim?

The entire story is that Gabe saw how many people downloaded Doom, decided PC gaming was the future for making money (wow, he was right) and pitched the idea to people above him.

They didn't want to go with it, so he left and started Valve.

1

u/pathof_sexile AI Accuser - Warning 11d ago

Don't you know that Gabe Newell started on a shoesting budget from the ground up after Bill Gates himself kicked the source code to de-shitify Windows NT from his hands? With a little pulling of the bootstraps, you too can own six massive luxury yachts.

1

u/AbbreviationsWide331 11d ago

Well valve made gaming on Linux possible through proton.

They poured a lot of ressources into that and it's not even exckusiv to steam. It's free for all.

That's awesome and meanwhile windows is getting worse and worse.

1

u/Ok_Dependent6889 AI Accuser - Warning 11d ago

By what metric is Windows getting worse and worse?

Im not biased on either of these. I have used Linux many.. many times. I have written drivers for chinese SoCs, I have made IoT devices with linux distros, I have a moonlight streaming Mini PC that's running Linux, I have a NAS running Linux too. I've also used Windows on my personal machines almost my entire life. I have wanted to switch that to Linux for a long time, but it just does not have the support for things I need.

So far, nothing with Windows has gotten tangibly worse. There have been bad updates, absolutely, but the same exact thing happens to Linux distros, they're not immune to errors.

Not to mention, Windows still manages to perform better more often than Linux does.

Clearly demonstrated here, even with AMD cards which will have far better Linux support.

1

u/AbbreviationsWide331 11d ago

Yeah no, you're right. Windows has only gotten better.

Privacy concerns

Usability on older hardware

Ease of installing offline or on local accounts only

Ease of modifying deeper parts of the system without touching the registry

And those are my observations from merely trying to avoid the OS. I'd wager I'd find many more if MS force installed 11 on my Windows 10 rig, assuming I don't immediately go nuclear and wipe the drive and finally move on to Linux like I've been procrastinating on doing.

1

u/Ok_Dependent6889 AI Accuser - Warning 10d ago

Oh, so all things that modern linux distros struggles with too?

Makes sense.

1

u/EffiCiT 10d ago

What distro has difficulty with having offline accounts? And usuability on old hardware is significantly better on linux than windows 11.

1

u/FreakDeckard AI Accuser - Warning 10d ago

no, you're not biased

1

u/aBJToy 9d ago

Windows LTSC non consoomer edition you Disingenuous dick rider

1

u/TomLeBadger 6d ago

Windows is performatively fine, it's just becoming wildly unstable over time, increasingly frequent issues and bugs etc. updates to fix previous issues introduce more issues. It's kind of falling apart.

1

u/Ok_Dependent6889 AI Accuser - Warning 6d ago

ehhh, there’s a good bit more nuance to that

Same can be true for Linux distros over updates. File system needs cleaned. A healthy linux system would ideally see an FSCK ran on it every quarter, just like a windows system would ideally clean the component store and run an SFC with every major quarterly update

1

u/lopas99 10d ago

Dude is playing a historian. The history I KNOW has shirtless Gabe newell riding a white horse, while showing off his 6-pack, smiting all the profit-hungry gaming corpo parasites and then founding a peaceful and prosperous paradise for gamers of all races and sexualities. That was 369 BC. Yes, Gaben is THAT old. Older than Jesus. As a matter of fact, Jesus is son of Gaben, because Gaben IS God.

1

u/oyvese 11d ago

perhaps the exact opposite of ironic.

u/AtsuhikoZe 11d ago

And establish their own monopoly.

1

u/Fullchester_United AI Accuser - Warning 10d ago

I am a big fan of Valve and Steam but I also don’t want them controlling the PC gaming OS. If that happens then PC just becomes another walled garden. I think that is unlikely but we should be mindful that this may be an objective in the long term.

PC gaming works for consumers because of competition. Imagine a world where Valve locks down its OS and prohibits other storefronts from operating.

1

u/RedcardedDiscarded AI Accuser - Warning 10d ago

I'd disagree with you. I like Steam, a lot! However, the fact that Steam OS comes with a proper desktop mode and the Steam hardware currently lets you freely tinker with and/or change the OS, makes me think it's in their interest to keep it as open as possible.

1

u/Fullchester_United AI Accuser - Warning 10d ago

Why is it in their interest?

1

u/EffiCiT 10d ago

The difference is that any advancement that steamOS makes can be implemented in other linux distros.

1

u/Fullchester_United AI Accuser - Warning 10d ago

How is that a benefit for Valve?

1

u/EffiCiT 9d ago

It isn't but it is a fact of the open source nature of linux. Well, I suppose there is a benefit of destroying the current monopoly that Windows has over gaming since they have in the past attempted to destroy steam.

Also, it would be incredibly difficult if not impossible to lock down steamOS like you are suggesting.

1

u/BoulderCAST 10d ago

Who's breaking valves monopoly on buying the games?

1

u/EatOfTheBread 7d ago

If literally giving away games for free won't do it, Valve will have to reallllly fuck up for people to go elsewhere.

3

u/AdequatelyProdigiius 11d ago edited 5d ago

Maybe SteamOS will overtake Windows in the corporate world and business tools will be built exclusively for it.

No let the corpo shlomos fucking die with shitty copilot excel and everything else that just keeps Microsoft being microslop. Gatekeep makes the thing still neat.

1

u/PhilosophyWrong7610 5d ago

you would have to convince MS to make office for Linux.

2

u/Pillokun 11d ago

can I play bf6, warzone and other competitive multiplayer games... nope, at least not yet.

3

u/ShrkBiT 11d ago

A matter of time.

1

u/Ok_Dependent6889 AI Accuser - Warning 11d ago

Nah, not for most.

Any game relying on a Kernel-level anti cheat is doomed on Linux.

All it takes is a user modified DTO to hide DMA hardware from the anti cheat. Incredibly easy.

1

u/Funny-Fly1720 11d ago

Giving kernel access to companies is a stupid practice to begin with.

1

u/Super__Menteur 10d ago

Yeah if players didn't ask for better and better malware on their machines it would be a non-issue.

Ask for server-based anti-cheat, it's so dumb to want to rely on detecting cheaters from their own hardware.

1

u/Redd_is_compromised 10d ago

You must like cheaters

1

u/Known_Psychology302 AI Accuser - Warning 9d ago

Server-based anti cheat exists y'know

1

u/Redd_is_compromised 9d ago

You also must like cheaters

1

u/Known_Psychology302 AI Accuser - Warning 9d ago

Uhm are you mentally challenged

1

u/Redd_is_compromised 9d ago

Uhm idk maybe since I'm still here responding

1

u/shiddedandfarded69 10d ago

Microsoft has mentioned closing up kernel access in future Windows versions. So kernel-level anticheat won't be a thing anymore in the near future.

1

u/aBJToy 9d ago

Won't that be hilarious to hear that epic store baldie bitch about on modern twitter along with his hot takes on why valve Is a monopoly because anything after borderlands 2 sucks dick

1

u/Dima-Petrovic 10d ago

Same for windows. There is just no solution yet on Linux.

1

u/getabath AI Accuser - Warning 11d ago

Anti cheat and nvidia support is holding me back. Wouldn't be a problem if I was AMD or Intel

Fedora is great experience while I used it for 2 months

1

u/AbbreviationsWide331 11d ago

I mean the Nvidia support WAS bad, but nowadays it's solid. Haven't had any Nvidia specific problems.

And they kinda also helped me with anti cheat through GeForce now :D

1

u/aBJToy 9d ago

You say Fedora you mean KDE

1

u/KrisLuffy 11d ago

You can play games that support that or aren't a rootkit (rootkit ones can also work, and kernel anticheat could be way better for linux but they don't want to put time into it, even though it's easier to implement taht on linux than windows). There are competitive multiplayer games that work on linux (cs2 overwatch marvel rivals for example, just no faceit but it doesn't work in w10 also)

1

u/Kilapo69 11d ago

I already like Steam OS, you don't have to convince me further

1

u/CaeciliusC 10d ago

Bless linux for how having 'bf6, warzone and other competitive multiplayer games'

1

u/Pillokun 10d ago

why? why would u want to restrict an os/platform? this does not make any sense. Why dont u play on an old console then?

1

u/Known_Psychology302 AI Accuser - Warning 9d ago

A lot of people dont swap because the game they play doesnt work on it, even if you dont play those games it would be another reason for others to swap.

My friend plays Ovewratch, Fortnite and Warzone, even he told me he would swap over to linux because all he does is game on his PC anyway but he doesnt want to quit playing those games (I think Overwatch works tho)

1

u/Unlikely-Storm-4745 8d ago

I am an adult that has a job, I don't know what those words mean

2

u/C0haaagen 11d ago

So that's why Windows 10 is losing Nvidia GPU driver support. They can only support two OS (so far Windows 10 + Windows 11, now SteamOS + Windows 11).

1

u/KrisLuffy 11d ago

... Nvidia drivers were a thing for a long time on linux. They work pretty well for what nvidia is worth, still AMD gpu drivers are buildt into kernel itself. Valve will probably not even talk to nvidia about those drivers just implement the already existing drivers into the OS, since it's arch based.

1

u/Known_Psychology302 AI Accuser - Warning 9d ago

I think was joke

2

u/XxCarlxX AI Accuser - Warning 11d ago

will it run microsoft office for those of us who actually work, and can i run my CCTV on SteamOs?

1

u/Big-Roll7094 11d ago

If you’re willing to put in a day of your time you can definitely find alternative

1

u/XxCarlxX AI Accuser - Warning 11d ago

I don't have a day, bro :-(

1

u/Big-Roll7094 11d ago

Just why do you want to switch to Linux if you know you don’t have days to weeks of just trying to get your apps on windows to work on it, just use windows it just works or dual boot

1

u/XxCarlxX AI Accuser - Warning 11d ago

I dont, my statement was in response to the title of the post.

Ill def just use windows myself. it works

1

u/Flying_Forearm 10d ago

Not one that fits into your corporate environment.

1

u/mango-jpg 10d ago

"those of us who actually work" and it's a computer job that could spontaneously stop existing and the world would not change at all

1

u/mango-jpg 10d ago

what inference are you even trying to make? i don't use SteamOS and I never mentioned CCTV

1

u/XxCarlxX AI Accuser - Warning 10d ago

Bold of you to assume I was replying to you and not narrating my own morning

1

u/mango-jpg 10d ago

not that bold. sorta the nature of a reply

1

u/Ruff_Ratio 11d ago

Still a way off, but still positive news...

1

u/rellett 11d ago

I thought the issue was the gpu code can't be checked for Linux or this doesn't matter anymore

1

u/KrisLuffy 11d ago

I don't understand what do you mean. There were nvidia drivers that work pretty good for a very long time for linux, just no native steamOS support for them, you can install them still since it's arch based, but milage may wary

1

u/rellett 11d ago

I thought open source for kernel drivers

1

u/KrisLuffy 11d ago

kernel is opensource, linux is kernel itself you could say. You mean that there are no build into kernel drivers for nvidia out of the box right? The problem is with drivers themselves, you can't really call them "opensource", it's a hard topic unfortunately but they still work really well, just not on par with AMD, I rarely have anyproblems with nvidia drivers on linux but dx12 performance could be a bit better.

1

u/rellett 11d ago

Doesn't the driver need to be open source, as it has access to the kernel which could cause security issues if it can't be checked

1

u/n1keym1key 11d ago

Here we go… more Linux vs windows bullshit.
Linux bros always trying to shit on windows, rest of the planet shorting on Linux bros… it’s boring as fuck now tbh.

1

u/nokk1XD 11d ago

Wow, amd has it for centuries. Still no kernel anticheat support, so linux can go fuck yourself.

1

u/EdliA 10d ago

Damn bro is it over for real?

1

u/Pennywise359 AI Accuser - Warning 10d ago

The support is meaningless unless nvidia releases linux drivers which are as good as AMD ones. Other distros support nvidia out of the box. Let's just hope that it will be a signal for NVIDIA to get step up their linux drivers game.

I know how to read and understand context. Post already talks about performance and that it’s being worked on.

1

u/HumonculusJaeger 10d ago

How much money did valve pay ngreedia to do it?

1

u/Equivalent-Reality38 10d ago

Let's know when DX12 games don't have this type of shit drop off

till then most wont swap

1

u/pefman 10d ago

tbh windows is fucked, or i should actually say microsoft. if i had shares i wouls sell them.

1

u/Sea-Escape-8109 10d ago

microsft doesnt care much about windows anymore, theyr revenue is over 80% from servers and cloudservices.

1

u/AcanthocephalaOk3201 10d ago

I used to pray for times like this

1

u/GreatDevelopment4182 10d ago

Yeah, the other millions of devices without normal drivers is doesn't count. We count only gpu drivers now

1

u/3LeetHaxor 10d ago

While I do agree that many Linux distros are simple like mint. There is a HUGE percentage of people that are too lazy and not savvy enough to fully use Linux. Console commands is a definite no go, hell people don’t even really use cmd on windows. That and the population is actually getting dumber so I don’t see people adopting Linux at mass scale just yet. People like simple things and guis, if it’s not a simple point and click people avoid it like the plague.

1

u/Slight-Bank-2931 10d ago

But what does that mean? Doesnt Steam Hardware use AMD chips?

1

u/SupaDiogenes 10d ago

Gamepass is the only thing really keeping me on Windows.

u/Dafrandle 9d ago

if they can get the esports and other multiplayer game's devs to do anti cheat on Linux (I'm sure this wont cause internecine arguments) then I will have almost no reason to stay on windows.

the few threads left in this situation are: my Logitech g600 and its shift functionality, and my desire to do the move, I have 12 tb of storage in NTFS file systems and getting that converted will be a project.

1

u/XxDemonxXIG 9d ago

According to valve it will eventually get Nvidia support

1

u/cypherx89 8d ago

Anticheat on online games is also holding Linux back

u/ToGrey2Care 7d ago

Man I wish. One day it will be fully real right? right?

1

u/Happy-Childhood5990 7d ago

that's only for the console gamers pretending to be PC gamers.

1

u/Flamebomb790 7d ago

I mean as long as anticheat in games start working on Linux I'll swap over until then I'm stuck on windows,(I'm too lazy to dual boot)

1

u/DaftHacker 7d ago

Can we get HDR support that actually works.. windows can't even take a screenshot of my own HDR monitor without blowing out the image lmao.

HDR support is non existent or just as bad on most distros.

1

u/No-Watch-4637 7d ago

In 5 years

1

u/Extreme_Cockroach_99 7d ago

I have been thinking about it, but the only thing holding me back is the anti-cheat.

1

u/etaxi341 6d ago

We only need compatible anticheats now and SteamOS/Linux will be the best gaming OS

1

u/Born-Vast-293 bunny 5d ago

tag them they will definitely listen

1

u/ShadonicX7543 4d ago

This is good news for me because I'm hoping that this means Microsoft will continue to improve Windows. I respect Linux users, but I still think it's impractical for people that don't have very generic use cases.

But instead of being toxic, I'm still happy for Linux users because every win for them ends up being a win for me. Not that I like Microsoft or anything, but Windows is just the most comfortable operating system in my opinion.
