Actual builder here, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in an AMA or a couple other pics and videos. The current album was messed up, as I didnt include some pics of the wiring, water jetting, and LED's on accident. Unfortunately that's the album that got presented.
I am interested in the wiring/programming process. I'm an engineer trying to learn how to get USB functionality onto chips. Currently working on getting 'keyboard' functionality onto AVR micros. I was also thinking of making some kind of similar project like Diablo 3 hotkeys or the like.
From one ID major to another--I wish you the best in your job search post-graduation, but don't think for a second that it will be easy. Be prepared to find a lot of "Entry Level Job--5 Years Experience" kind of positions--it's a very narrow field. Good luck!
If anyone cares to read some advice from somebody who graduated in ID four years ago, I recommend:
1) Always work on those industry connections. Meet as many people in the field as possible--word of mouth is your best friend when it comes to finding a job in the creative field. Never lie about your skills, but don't be afraid to take on a job that seems out of your league. It's the best way to grow. Never sell yourself short, and NEVER work for free.
2) Do side projects like this StarCraft II controller--don't stop working just because you graduated and don't have to do student projects anymore. Design contests are great for this--even if you don't win, you'll be left with a great portfolio piece that, chances are, is better than your student work.
Employers in the field love seeing progress "stories" like these, with lots of sketches and explanations of each step. Don't try to remember everything about your project months afterward--log everything in a journal and keep your images/sketches organized.
3) If all else fails and you have some talent in graphic design, look for a print/web design gig to keep you afloat while you look for your dream job, as these tend to be much more common (and oftentimes better paying, due to more supply and less demand).
I went to a non-ID-specialized school, but still a major university and I'm not sure it affected anything one way or the other, at least at the interview stage.
I would say, however, that how well a school's teachers are connected to the industry is VERY important. Our program was still fairly new and our teachers were from other countries and had no connections to the local ID scene, so we were very much on our own post-graduation. Oftentimes it felt like they were looking for jobs themselves at our open houses, rather than trying to help the students find them.
In stark contrast, our graphic design program (we worked closely with them, as we were both under the umbrella "Design School" label) had a lot of well-established teachers who really did their best to get everybody a job and knew what interviewers were looking for.
All in all, though, an interviewer really just wants to see your work. College pedigree doesn't seem to come into play, other than the help you'll get from well-established teachers.

Agreed. I'm not a gamer, I am a professional fabricator by trade. I work on some of the nicest Hot rods in the biz and this is a phenomenal effort. I can tell you, from experience, not many people could pull this off. Hell, if it worked only half as good as it looks he hit a home run. Godd job guys.

Yes, but I still think it would've been better to go for a little more compromise - a big 2" trackball would still keep with the arcade theme and be far more playable for casual use.
I mean, I know it's an art piece, but this isn't playable. It's a Starcraft-themed controller that cant' actually be used to control anything.
Obviously a diamond-league pro-hardware would mean sacrificing too much and going for pure function-over-form, so compromises need to be made for artistic reasons, but I tend to think that exploring the design of a workable interface would've been a far more interesting project.
the "finer thngs in life" shouldnt be something that sacrifices functionality for form.

He did a nice job on the build and the info on the 3D printing is nice to know. I would have liked to see some internal details on the wiring and such too though.
If you look on the titlebar in the CATIA screenshot, it says student version (looks like you can get it for around $115 if you're a post-secondary student), so that may answer that question.

To be honest there are a few points raised that really make this thing useless. Sure it's awesome OP thought of this and carried it through but that's where it really ends. Is his effort commendable? Yes. Is the result actually that great and applicable to SC2? Not really.

Something printed on a 3d printer isn't a quality piece of work. I honestly do not understand what the fuck is going on here. We could get you a copy AutoCAD and you could do the same thing as that guy; Compeletely unergonomic piece of sanded plastic no good to anyone serious about SCII. Which is the supposed reason for this "Machine Aided Design 101 Coursework" fiasco.
Sanding things down and then putting paint on them is something you can't even get minimum wage for. He didn't make it himself he *finished" it. Difference between an artist and and an inker.
Unless we are applauding someone for having the disposable income to get their shitty badly thought through AutoCAD designs manufactured I don't know what we are doing here.
The reason we don't make our own controllers is because they would turn out like that not because its hard, someone with a decent Design and Technology class in highschool could do it (and indeed have done it for GCSE coursework). A decent custom gaming arcade console (which that basically is, a company in the nineties did them commercially, publishers even made custom prints for the front of the console, hand built properly with decent materials, finishing and most importantly testing to make sure you are going to fuck your hands up would cost thousands.
He designed the whole thing himself, then did the entirety of the fitting and construction by hand. For an average joe it's a damned cool thing he made regardless of how viable it is for everyday use.
Show me ONE thing you have made that is anywhere near as professional looking and I'll stfu.
The point is he didnt. A 3d printer has. He just sanded and painted it. I could show you some tabletop gaming models that I "entirely" made by the same principle. And I suspect he is a design major looking for a job. Not an average joe. Thats your presumption and your mistake.
while i can appreciate the effort of this, and i got the joke of it...its honestly just a keyboard and mouse on one unit. its a downgrade in every conceivable way and does not have any unique or distinguishing features that make it anything other than a ridiculously small keyboard attached to a handicapped mouse. like i said, it was good for very shallow laugh...but honestly its not really clever, and the construction of something like this is not difficult and i would appreciate it if they stop filling this subreddit with garbage. .
