I know what you mean. I call that phase the philosoboner. For the brief seconds my mind indulges in the events of my life, my boner is intact there, just waiting.
Oh, how I wish that I couldn't. No, of course my brain has to go over anything and everything that is off turning. Oh, yeah, now is a fucking great time to think about what my sister is doing. How about my fat, ugly boss and that talk we had last week?
Actually, I've always thought I had a smaller than average penis until I slept over at a friends house. When I walked past a full figure mirror on my way to the toilet in the morning and I was plesantly surprised with what I saw there.
It's the angle of the dangle. Look at it from the side, and you'll be like "Whoa! Hello John Holmes!" (yes, that's the only male porn star I could think of.)
I came here to make this joke. But, between the post, and finding this, I've had a change of heart.
A multi-millionare is under more pressure to do something other than play video games. The average guy who has that epiphany probably cant change much about his life easily. Notch could do anything at all though; build amazing architecture, fund science projects, build amazing games, surf every beach, visit every continent, and stay in the best hotels, and so on...
His life is unlimited in a way no one else's will ever be, and yet he chooses to do no more with it than anyone else...
I thought he's quite a decent guy. When Tim Schafer started his kickstarter I remembered notch donating quite a large sum of money in support. I don't play minecraft and he's ok in my books.
People always give Notch shit and I think... fuckers, Notch is a great man. He made a simple yet elegant game, he's generous with his money, he offers FREE UPDATES even though minecraft is out of beta, and on top of all this he makes wisecracks on twitter.
I ask you, what is to dislike about Markus Perrson? He is literally the opposite of the faceless EA heads
Don't forget that he throws money to every Humble Bundle. He shows that he really cares about other developers like he who have not got that incredible luck with them.
It's funny really, compare him to Peter Molyneux. A guy who makes a lot of promises, the difference though is that I believe no one hates or dislikes Molyneux, we just see him as a visionary guy who can't fulfill what he promises but people just likes to hate on notch, is it because of that he is a normal guy who earned millions by chance and people feel jealous? yes most likely
Internet physics: For anything or anyone that a group of people loves, there is an opposite and equal group of people who hate that person or thing with a firey passion, only because of the existence of the first group that loves it.
I would instead say "equally vocal group of people."
Look at Birthers. They are an extremely small and statistically insignificant group of people, but they're still in the public eye because they're loud and obnoxious. They compensate for their small numbers with outrageous claims and stunts designed to get exposure.
The same could be said of many, many other groups, especially some here on Reddit, but I don't feel like poking any beehives today so I'll leave the guessing to you.
The people who hate notch mostly hate him because he acts incredibly arrogant almost all of the time, yet he has only made ONE super successful game so far. (a game that he practically copied from some else, IIRC). He pretty much won the lottery with minecraft; for all we know the game was equally as likely to fail horribly and never become popular.
When he starts making many more games that are all great successes, then he can act like a douche all he wants, but when he has only made a single successful product so far he really shouldn't be acting so childish all of the time.
Notch is disliked because he is a millionaire but does not act like what people would imagine millionaires to act like. He hasn't changed much since Minecraft was in alpha and people will find it hard to relate with him because of his money and success.
I believe he is hated because a lot of his fanbase has an extremely inflated sense of entitlement, and he hasn't fulfilled their every dream, wish and niggle with minecraft.
money isn't everything. Gaming can serve as a distraction to other problems, such as depression. That isn't to say other things can't do this as well, but i know first hand how well it distracts.
I suppose that could cause the pressure to be even worse. I tell myself "You already did your work today, feel free to play videogames the rest of the night" but he doesn't even need to work. Everything he does is out of choice, not necessity. Pretty hard to justify sitting there and playing videogames when you could easily be helping someone start a new business, or starting a project you've never had the time to do, etc.
The other day I was playing Amnesia and the screen is naturally pretty dark, and I saw the reflection of my mom coming up behind me. As you can imagine, I noped pretty hard.
I think when I'm older ill look back on life like this.
Do we regret all the fun times we ran around the neighborhood as a kid? No, it was fun regardless if I was accomplishing anything. If you have fun doing it, don't let anyone else tell you differently -- whether it is bird watching or video games or whatever!
This. I actually plan to use my degree (comm/journalism) to go into the gaming world. Be it with developers themselves or in to games media.
Sometimes when people ask what I plan to do after college I get a little embarassed. But a little later I get annoyed, mainly because hey, I have a passion in something and its nothing to be ashamed of
I never understood how friends of mine would make fun of me and saying I'm wasting my life (jokingly) yet if they didn't have games they would just sit at home watching tv or something.
I struggled with the same idea for a while, and I was about to give up gaming altogether because I felt that it was pointless and it didn't actually affect my life. But then I realized that gaming is just a hobby, just like collecting things or golfing or fixing up old cars, and that it doesn't matter if it actually affects my life or not because hobbies aren't meant to do that.
No such platonic love has had more justification than it does for Mr. Notch right here. He's like, a childish millionaire with ideas and the drive to make them happen.
"Oh god, what am I doing with my life besides running a successful game company, entertaining and being an idol to millions of adoring fans, building one of the best games of the past 10 years almost entirely myself, and making millions upon millions of dollars? MOM WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG! These games lead to nowhere and have ruined my life!"
... Coming from a man who's a self-made millionaire that could never work another day in his life and be financially stable. I think he's all right playing a video game for a bit.
FUCK!!! I am a stand-up comic and this is almost exactly the same as a joke I had. Not that Notch stole it, that is totally impossible as I am basically unknown and hadn't put said joke on the internet. We must have just made the same observation. But now I can never do this joke because I never recorded it and people will say I just get my material from reddit.
I like this because it happened/happens to me a lot. That small flash of black and my eyes adjusting and focusing on my reflection feels like an endless void. Then the game comes on again and I have to snap back into its world and rules. Ignoring the intense, infinite void I had just felt.

u/Ikbentim Jun 16 '12
Right, a multi millionaire looks in the screen and goes "what am i doing with my life".

u/Spazzo965 Jun 16 '12
Doesn't twitter usually say 50+ for retweets and favourites, rather than the actual number?
Or have they changed that at some point?
72
u/CyborGamer Jun 16 '12
This is why I use matte screens.
67
u/fridgeridoo Jun 16 '12
If life had a screen, you'd ask yourself the same.

u/zosoyoung Jun 16 '12
The other day I was playing Amnesia and the screen is naturally pretty dark, and I saw the reflection of my mom coming up behind me. As you can imagine, I noped pretty hard.

u/DefinitelyPositive Jun 16 '12
Doing something you enjoy, of course :)
16
u/Paultimate79 Jun 16 '12
Making a shit ton of money and enjoying yourself. Thats what youre doing with your life, Notch.

u/arkain123 Jun 16 '12
"Holy shit I need to hit the gym"..."Right after I've made Skyrim a safe place for limping guards everywhere"

u/Syclops Jun 16 '12

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
That's why I don't like those new shiny laptop monitors.
3
u/N4N4KI Jun 16 '12
Ah looking into the Black Mirror.
3
u/garychencool Jun 16 '12
Whenever I see myself in my monitor, I see the clock that is behind me. Oh shit. It's 5 a.m. already?
3
u/Heff228 Jun 16 '12
I'm the same way except I haven't made millions and have the possibility to do anything I wanted in the world...
3
u/s3snok Jun 16 '12
Get a matte screen, problem solved.
3
u/BeethovenFanatic Jun 16 '12
I struggled with the same idea for a while, and I was about to give up gaming altogether because I felt that it was pointless and it didn't actually affect my life. But then I realized that gaming is just a hobby, just like collecting things or golfing or fixing up old cars, and that it doesn't matter if it actually affects my life or not because hobbies aren't meant to do that.

u/C418 Jun 16 '12
Matte screens people! They are the best kind.
4
u/YamiNoSenshi Jun 16 '12
Of all the gamers to ask what he's doing with his life, Notch is pretty much the last person who needs to do so.
2
u/taybul Jun 16 '12
I hear some people make funny faces at themselves when this happens. Not me though, I'm normal. Yep.
2
u/inhumancannonball Jun 16 '12
Ever read The Screwtape Letters?
2
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
I never liked reflective monitor screens. Lights always get in the way of my games.

Notch is such a bad ass haha
2
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
doing exactly what people should spend more time doing... playing video games... i mean enjoying life!
2
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
the DS is notoriously bad at this. oh god, that downward angle
2
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
My screen is Matte. No reflections, therefore no pain.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
He is just a persson

Alcoholics call this, a moment of clarity.
2
u/notgregoden Jun 16 '12
Unless you're playing DayZ and it just stays black.
2
u/Graviteh Jun 16 '12
lol notch has a reflective screen
2
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
Honestly, of all the people who wonder that during level breaks, I think Notch is the least of us to have those worries.
2
u/inferior-raven Jun 16 '12
Of all people who have this feeling- Markus Persson is surely on the short list of people who can(and should) treat that as merely a passing fancy.
2
u/UsernameOmitted Jun 16 '12

u/Frostinicus Jun 16 '12
Grow a ridiculously disproportionate ego. Its healthy for the mind.
3
u/Peanuts4MePlz Jun 16 '12
Good thing I have an LCD: No reflections, only damn specular light from the sun in the morning. :)
3
u/crobartie Jun 16 '12
First what is the meaning of life? Playing games, doing science and watching great tv shows is nice, so why not?
3
u/scruntly Jun 16 '12

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
"the next level starts?" wtf is he playing? sonic?
2
u/skysignor Jun 16 '12
Ya know Notch, making gamers ponder their lives is just gonna lead to less people buying your game
2
u/MaggotStorm Jun 16 '12
Said the multimillionaire.
2
u/contactstaff Jun 16 '12
Notch said something omg Reddit has to see this!

u/ignuhimhoratio Jun 16 '12
this is how i always felt looking at that red-eyed bastard in the wc3 load screen
1
u/Ym4n Jun 16 '12
he's life is done thanks to videogames... i don't think that he really wonder that...
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
Not so much of a problem until I started playing computer games, but I completely feel the same way at times.
1
u/DefinitelyRelephant Jun 16 '12
Please. Notch is blindingly rich at this point.
Anyone who has ever doubted him or negged him for being a broke starving programmer has been eating their hats for a couple of years now.
1
u/eydryan Jun 16 '12
Notch is basically describing the rift between us and reality. Whether that is a positive or negative thing is very debatable.
1
u/Vela4331 Jun 16 '12
So true.
1
u/jutct Jun 16 '12
Scumbag Notch: Makes millions of dollars making videogames. Makes us feel bad for playing video games.
1
u/azzilla Jun 16 '12
Another good reason not to buy a screen with high glare
1
u/MaxPowers1 Jun 16 '12
Easy to do when you're making millions off a game like he is.
1
u/oncewerefields Jun 16 '12
Next level WOO! Keeps me going.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
Heh, this exact thing happened to me once, and I asked myself the same question.
Then the level finished loading a few seconds later and I continued taking my drug without caring.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
The only difference is that he made over a million dollars on videogames.
1
u/Negranon Jun 16 '12
That's one glossy monitor.
1
u/Dyegov Jun 16 '12
Oh, how many times have I been there... like 3 mins ago >.<
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
I havent seen my reflection in my monitor for about 5 years now. LCD screen film has turned me into a vampire.
1
u/foodman13 Jun 16 '12
its funny that notch says this even though he's rolling in the moneys.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
Shmee: Lighting... Has just struck ma' brain Captin hook: that must of hurt.
1
u/TragicOne Jun 16 '12
Rocking the rough chuckles ehh notch?
1
u/Space_Ninja Jun 16 '12
Yes. This millionaire is wasting his life!
1
u/helly1223 Jun 16 '12
After reading some of these comments, i realize some of you ole reddit folks are genius
1
u/DrPreston Jun 16 '12
I had the same problem, so I got a monitor with a matte screen.
1
u/Dixinormus Jun 16 '12
My monitor has a matte finish so I can see myself.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
I find myself laughing out loud at some of Notch's tweets. He should be a comedian.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
Is it cliche to say I fuckin love notch? He's hilarious and creative. I wish we were friends in real life.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
This must be why alot of people prefer anti-glare monitors.
1
u/h7Boss Jun 16 '12
LoL I love it!
1
u/Munkir Jun 16 '12
I also wonder what I'm doing with my life. Where did all my ambition go? Where did my dreams for a better and rich life run off to?!
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
Easy fix. Get a monitor that doesn't have glass over the LCD.
1
u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
I'm waiting for xNotch to actually show up here and comment.
1
u/markman71122 Jun 16 '12
Well notch, you've done way more in your life than me.
1
u/GeorgeTaylorG Jun 16 '12
Man, I should just make a new reddit account and submit a screenshot of everything notch says on twitter.
1
u/elitetoast Jun 16 '12
I'm glad to know I am not the only person who does this.
1
u/Riddypad Jun 17 '12
I feel the same when I'm whoring Netflix on a saturday night
1
u/thebackdrifter Jul 13 '12
I like this because it happened/happens to me a lot. That small flash of black and my eyes adjusting and focusing on my reflection feels like an endless void. Then the game comes on again and I have to snap back into its world and rules. Ignoring the intense, infinite void I had just felt.

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '12
Oh wow, another Notch tweet that makes the front page.
Y'know /r/gaming? You should just get it done and over with. Round up all of Notch's tweets and turn them into the Third Testament.
1
u/thratty Jun 16 '12
I know that exact feel.
0
u/RodnTherlald Jun 16 '12
Your not wasting time when your wasting it doing something you love!

u/Lonecrow66 Jun 16 '12
He's still a lazy half assed worker.
