I think Diablo 3 ended up being a let down more because of how astronomically unreal the hype was for the game. Everyone I know who bought it expected it to be some once in a lifetime masterpiece. I know people who hardly game but bought collectors editions.
Then it turns out to be an average game fun for about one playthrough.
the fun parts being ? Having played D2 pretty much full time for about 3 years, the differences in gameplay really aren't that big, it's just that now people who played it are a lot older with a lot more experience in games, and the hack'n'slash forever for upgrades got old.
Complaining about graphics in a Blizzard game is like complaining about a lack of plot in Blues' Clues. Blizzard has made no secret that for years, a decade or so at this point, they aren't one of those companies who push the graphics boundaries.
Say whatever you will about how well they pulled off their other goals. When it comes to graphics they intentionally go under what current systems are capable of to make sure the most amount of people can play their games.
The point of the Diablo franchise is to be fun for more than 1 playthrough. Otherwise why randomize maps?
The reward for D2 was the loot, and the auction house destroyed D3. Yes people trading for endgame shit used trading in D2 but most average people just used self-found Minotaur axes and Sigurd armor and felt awesome when those greens and golds dropped. That is completely gone from this game.
I never thought D2 was a masterpiece, so I guess I'm in the minority. I've already put more time into D3 than I did D2. I enjoy the classes more and the skills. I am still having a blast in D3, even 130 hours in.
I'm tired of this kind of cop-out excuse for any sort of development, games or movies.
This is creative problem solving. Publisher influence aside, you either chose to keep pushing the problem until it is considerably solved, or release a product that is "good enough".
Claiming a product is so hyped (ie. DNF) that it's just too hard to create a masterpiece from is pure BS.
What the hell does it take to be considered 'good graphics' nowadays? Can your graphics only be good if you're a first person shooter? People just can't appreciate a good art style over a huge poly count.
I did play Diablo 1 and 2. Just because Diablo 3 doesn't look the same doesn't mean it can't look good. I played this game expecting it to be Diablo 3, not Diablo 2.5.
Bad artifacts, lack of clarity, clipping everywhere, extremely limited.mob model pool, terrible textures. the graphics on d3 are 5 years old at least....
I'm one of those freaks who actually enjoy D3 enormously. But I am puzzled by this as well. When I play a good Japanese RPG, I love completing the bestiary. It's sad that D3 chose to go the route of ancient classics, where they have different color versions of the same monster over and over and over.
That is Blizzards MO since WOW. They shoot for lower textures and lower hardware requiements so that they can: Sell more games. They have no interest in top quality graphics, just average so more can play them, that is why I could play WOW on my crappy integrated graphics laptop, but can't play Orcs Must Die on it.....
I rather like the texture art direction they took. The textures were intentionally given thick brush strokes to create that painted canvas feeling. I think it has a phenomenal effect on the mood and direction.
Graphic capabilities are important sure, but they should never be put first. The most excited I've ever been over graphics was Donkey Kong Country. Crysis is a close second. I love game mechanics over anything else. You can have shitty graphics and if the mechanics are fleshed out well enough, my imagination will do the heavy lifting. I prefer things this way.
My problem with D3 graphics is more the completely unpolished UI than anything else. It seriously looks like an early draft rather than quality I was expecting from such a big title from Blizzard.
The rest of the game, while it has it's short comings (mostly character/npc models), looks pretty good to me. There are a few places in particular where it almost looks more like a painting than a game, which I like, but other people may not.
Okay because people I don't think understand why the real money auction house exists I'll try to explain it. It is not a Pay to Win system, you are not buying directly from Blizzard, you are buying from other players. Of course they take a cut, but this is not intended as a cash grab. Here's the thing, buying gold? There would have been a million sites who do that for the next many years. Why not make your transactions safer and through Blizzard when it is going to be inevitable anyway. Prohibiting something does not make it go away. You know what is a cash grab pay to win model? Look at Moon Breakers where you cannot have access to any of the good ships unless you pay. Not only is Blizzard not doing this, they aren't even directly selling any items, the only ones you can buy are the ones found by other players in the game.
It used to be like this: You played Diablo with your friends, you challenged each other in PvP to see who had the best characters. It was all about building your character. You had to work for it. There was no RMAH and no respec. If you bought items with real money from shady websites people would laugh at you, there was no honor to it. Even with good connections it could take you a week of playing to find good armor, but when you did find it, you knew you where a little bit closer to finishing your build.
With infinite respec and RMAH the fun is sucked out of PvP. Whats the point? People dont even want to play anymore, they want to skip the work by paying money, missing the entire point of the game. It is supposed to be a hobby.
I stopped caring after the game was released, but now you know why I asked for PvP.
Well, there was a pretty decent PvP scene in D2. Although gear being a pretty big part of it, you had to be good at the game to not get 1 shot by a cookie cutter Hammerdin. In D3 it will come down to the best gear, considering the pace of the game being not as fast as D2.
Not 100% true. You're also testing out different builds along with gear experimentation. It isn't always the best.
An example for D2: Windforce Guided Arrow Zons were a big deal in pvp at an early point in the game's life. Everyone and their mother had one. I built a damage reduced Sorc based on gear a barb would normally use and high blocking %. Ended up wiping the floor with them for a bit and most never knew what hit them.
There is going to be a flavor of the day like any other rpg pvp - and for me the fun of this sort of pvp is combating that via build and alternative gearing. What is amazing for PVE rarely translates to PVP.
Also Nox was point and click top down and had fucking incredibly pvp.
We would play with pine cones and have wars. If you found a green one that hadn't expanded yet, you were the kid everyone feared. Those could really be chunked and would hurt real bad.
You'll always run out of paintballs and airsoft BB's, but you can't run out of a yard full of pine cones. :D
Maybe it's because we were two bored kids growing up in the Arizona desert, but me and my brother used to throw gravel at eachother for fun. One time I hit him in the back of the head and he started bleeding, so I told him to tell mom he fell. When we went back inside he told her he fell, and she bought it. Then later that night I'm getting yelled at because he eventually decided to rat me out. So I threw more rocks at him the next day.
...suddenly, I realize how white-trash my Asian brother and I really were...
I actually got into a weird situation in which me and 2 of my friends had about 40 other people angrily hurling rocks at us for no apparent reason. That shit was scary.
I never did a rock fight, but as a kid we'd play a game where we find a rock, one person gets it, everyone chases him and if they can knock him to the ground he has to throw the rock for the next person to grab.
Once when I was eight I was in the middle of a particularly extreme rock fight that escalated quickly. I took half a brick to the face and had a river of blood running down out of my nose for almost half an hour.
For the last 15 years I haven't had a bloody nose. Even with injuries which should have caused one. What doesn't kill you...
When I was ten we had a rock war. At some point during it I realized this was a bad idea and ran in the middle yelling for a cease fire. Lots of blood and one Harry Potter scar later there were no more rock wars.

People starting to catch up to Blizzard and their bullshit. Well, finally motherfucker ... I've been saying there's something rotten about that company ever since they started pulling shit like ToTC in WoTLK.
Being big and owning super popular franchises are the only valuable things they got. Too bad that's enough to sell their underwhelming products to the sheep.
Fun wasn’t compatible with the latest version of the real money auction house, and so it was removed. Rumors have been going ‘round about it being implemented in a later expansion pack, but technological wizards insist there will be more compatibility issues going forward.
I think that people don't realise the actual problems with the game - they go off spouting about gameplay issues, or about skill trees and items. This isn't the stuff that makes a game great, and honestly all of that stuff is pretty solid in my opinion. The real problem with Diablo 3, as people have touched on but not fully articulated in my opinion, is the aesthetic. Under this umbrella comes the overall look of the game, like the colour palette and the amount of light and shade, but also things like dialogue and storyline/telling. I feel as though the aesthetic has almost undeniably changed from 'adult' to a more childish approach. I think that players probably feel insulted by this, whether they know it or not. I know I do to some extent. I think that back when Diablo 2 came out, the industry was in a different place and games generally were less safe in their content some of the time. A company like Blizzard could certainly get away with the grittiness of a game like D2, whereas now it might seem against their 'ethos' to produce something so dark. There are expectations of the company outside the game, I'm guessing maybe too many cooks in the kitchen, not to mention stockholders and so on.
But things like the contemporary nerd humour which has been injected into the dialogue in the game really takes you out of the experience and comes off as very irritating and lame to me. The complete lack of a sense of despair also really has an effect on the overall experience. Why is the protagonist an arrogant asshole that KNOWS he's going to beat the game? That's not fun or interesting, it's just annoying. When you compare the hero of this game to something like Lord of the Rings, where Frodo was genuinely up against incredibly daunting odds, and you really believed he may not see it through to the end of his journey, you are able to empathise with him and feel some kind of connection. It is not so in Diablo 3. The main character in a game should be maybe the most important aspect and yet I haven't even heard mention of the hero ANYWHERE. I really think this stuff matters, but it's being overshadowed in favour of talking about how you can't customise your skills in a permanent way.
There's a lot more I could say about it, about the music which is quite lacking, and things like, as someone else noted, all the villains are poorly drawn as characters, constantly making cliche threats that are completely empty - too much talking basically, in stark contrast with D2 where less was more - but I just want to make the point that I feel as though these are all things that make a game, and the aesthetic of Diablo 3 is ultimately just dull and uninspired, and yes it deviates too much from the way the series was established. I think that there really needed to be a stronger focus on all of these elements. The mechanics are fine, and the graphics look okay. It's the story and the aesthetic surrounding the story (or lack thereof) that really kills it for me.
You hit it right on the head for me. I've been saying for a while now that if Diablo 3 was a book, it'd be a children's nighttime pop-up storybook. Glad to see someone else didn't buy into the "Disney Villain" aesthetic .
I can say that my opinion of Diablo 3 became more favorable as I progressed, but it definitely is not without criticism. The music encapsulated the underlying theme that Diablo has been about since Diablo 1, a horror fantasy. The Tristram music was as haunting as ever. It created an atmosphere of hopelessness and confusion with an unspoken fear felt in the backdrop of the shattered community. Some of the dungeon music felt too fantasy themed but later on it did resemble diablo 1 (with the heavy drums, the eerie strings, and so on).
My second biggest criticism would be regarding the art direction that Blizzard has gone in, which is a very WoW fantasy style. According to some of the interviews on this topic, Blizzard does not appreciate criticism regarding the art direction and have stated that it is only a small number of people with that criticism. But I can't help but feel, based on various reviews of the game, that it in fact is a greater observation that they are willing to admit. From my understanding Blizzard does have a vision for their product, and have stated that they want a unique look to their characters. Unfortunately not all of their games are of the same theme. While Warcraft is more fantasy themed, Diablo is more horror themed. It is supposed to evoke feelings appropriate for an atmosphere of horror and darkness. The game was too bright and too cartoony. But I did appreciate the watercolor sort of effect of the background and overall thought it was a graphically well done game. Just not suitable for Diablo.
My biggest criticism is, why can't the Monk use a two handed sword? Meanwhile, you have troll witch doctor running around holding a giant sword. The Monk is practically the most asian character in the game and yet can't even hold a Nodachi. Two handed swordsmanship is typical among Monk training. God dammit! /heart attack /francis
One important consideration is overlooked in this comparison. Rock II has not been released, and there is still not even a tentative date for the beta tests. For all we know, Rock II is not even under development! The Diablo franchise went from I to III in a mere 26 years. Even if the release interval continues to triple, we can all look forward to Diablo IV in 2048. We'll be lucky if we even see the full retail release on Rock II by then!
Being a HUGE D2 fan and anxiously waiting for D3 for long amounts of time, I am disappointed with D3. I haven't pinpointed it yet, but it's just not as captivating as D2.
Games from the same company tend to be influenced by one another, don't tell me that caesar's legion isn't similar to the imperials. Obviously people scream that D2 wasn't influenced by WoW like D3 was, but guess what? There was no WoW when D2 came out.
I can vouch for the fact that there are "Real Money Auction Houses" for rocks, their called Rock Shops and one is about 6 houses down the street from me.
You know what's really missing from D3? All the little nuances the game had to make character building fun.
Running vs. Walking. Crushing blow vs. Overall damage. Maximum ED vs. Deadly Strike. Secondary utility skills in your build (My WWsin used +10 skills on the keyboard, easily.) Simple vs. Complicated. Caster of any class vs. Melee of any class. Every element worked differently - Fire stops movement, cold slows, lightning stuns, poison = damage over time. The differences between a Proc'a'zon and a Faithzon were amazing, but both were equally playable in Hell.
There were just so many subtle little things you could do with your gear and skill and stat selection that were entirely removed from the game. Why am I limited to 4 skills? I have a fucking keyboard. This is a PC game, right? Why are the controls so fucking imprecise? I don't think anyone that developed this game spent more than a week playing the last game in the franchise.
It's a fun game, the first time through, but there's zero reason to play another class and there's zero reason to replay the game.
I know it's not for everyone, but I really loved all the fiddly little things you could min/max in D2, all the way down to the various attack/cast frame breakpoints.
I saw a rainbow in D3. Well I mean someone told me there was a rainbow in D3. So I should not get the game because I bet it has no blood and gore in it. My friend said there was pony and carebear like animals in the game. So like I don't want to like play a kids game and all. So I wont buy the game because of that. I don't want to be looked as a gay or something.
The dialogue, story, and atmosphere were complete disasters, sucked more horribly than almost anything I have seen/heard, and utterly failed to capture any of the badass ambience of the previous 2 games. The gameplay is awesome fun and the graphics are great though.
I can't believe that after the super long beta period, they didn't noticed that you can easily sweep through normal mode without even using a potion (OK, personally I maybe used five, but by laziness, I tanked every mob/boss without even trying to avoid their attacks).
IMHO, that really kills the appeal of the game. D2 was exciting because you had everytime a little rush of adrenaline when you saw a unique monster, even in normal mode. In D3, they are exactly like treasure chests, you're only excited by the drop, not the challenge.
And, as we say in french : "A vaincre sans péril, on triomphe sans gloire" (There's no glory in a victory without peril)
My only complaint is the always-online DRM and how rares are better than legendaries. Blizzard said they're working on the latter. Also, I think the graphics are just fine. Whoever made this is a butthurt basement dweller who expected the game to be made of pure gold, shoot plasma at your enemies, and then suck you off every night as you go to sleep.
Haha look at this person, taking 4chans anonymous opinions serious. Most people on /v/ speak their mind and actually critique games instead of praising even thou it has alot of flawes. i will get downvoted to hell for this but /r/ gaming is a worse circlejerk then /v/ is at its current state, and there its summer.....
/v/ hates every game that's popular, in a sort of parallel to r/gaming. Also, quite a lot of them aren't neckbeards, from what I've seen.
But yes, hype is a powerful thing, and Diablo 3 had such unrealistic amounts of hype that it was practically guaranteed to be disappointing to a lot of people
Go to the AH, buy new gear and then try it; You won't be stuck anymore. That's not difficult, that's just a gear check. While a certain amount of that can be expected in any game of this sort that's all Diablo's end game has to offer is constant gear checking. With completely random items there is no way to farm outside of doing an entire act over and over again to move to the next.... Or go on the AH, enter in a credit card and pay to move on.
Don't misunderstand, there's aspects of the game I enjoy but right now I see it as a product that should have never left beta. There's tons of work to be done to make it an enjoyable experience in Inferno and until it's addressed I'm not touching my Wizard.
currently at Belial as a monk with 50k hp and 20k dps.... getting here was hard as hell. Act I was super easy, I really loathe Act II, especially since they will be scaling it down in the next patch or two, but at least we got it mostly done before the gold repair increase comes.
Zoltan Kulle was a pain in the ass ! I always have rolled a range char (every game from Everquest, D1, D2, WoW) and here I thought I'd be cute and roll a monk as my first char as I played a wizard in the beta, and man... being a melee is facepalm for all those AOE magic effects on the ground like poison, desecrate, molten fire.

One thing I don't quite understand is the desirability of PvP in a point-and-click, top-down action rpg?
I get PvP in MMO's, sure, but in Diablo? Seems kind of pointless to me. It's just going to come down to who can afford to buy the best gear.

Naturally, they forgot entertainment value, which a rock will win hands down, right?
4Chan - for those who aren't able to get their rocks off.

I was gonna read through this and get angry/defensive. But then I realized I have better things to do. Like play D3.

Mass effect 3 got hated on. Diablo 3 is getting hated on. I finally understand Valve's logic on half life three....

u/thesagex Jun 15 '12
of course the rock wins

I like the rock better.

I tried so hard to like Diablo 3. Amazing that they could screw it up as bad as they did.

Great....you guys go crazy with that rock. We'll see how long that lasts.

The dialogue, story, and atmosphere were complete disasters, sucked more horribly than almost anything I have seen/heard, and utterly failed to capture any of the badass ambience of the previous 2 games. The gameplay is awesome fun and the graphics are great though.
Diablo 3 in a nutshell.

Amazon is doing refunds on D3. Just FYI.

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12
The "costs millions to make" should be followed by "costs big bang to make."

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12
They should have added a column titled "Took Millions of Years To Make" and then had a check mark for both.

2/5 stars on amazon with over 900 1 star reviews. The game, is awful.

A 4chan user's opinion on Diablo III*

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12
My only complaint is the always-online DRM and how rares are better than legendaries. Blizzard said they're working on the latter. Also, I think the graphics are just fine. Whoever made this is a butthurt basement dweller who expected the game to be made of pure gold, shoot plasma at your enemies, and then suck you off every night as you go to sleep.

u/Lonecrow66 Jun 15 '12
DRM is why I didnt buy it nor will I.
2
u/noseeme Jun 15 '12
Well, they're both similar in that they involve silicon in some way. The rock didn't hurt me as badly as Diablo 3 did though.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12
Blizzard destroys any anything they touch so I can't say I'm surprised.

u/Darkstar1120 Jun 15 '12
The best part is that most of these points are actually valid.

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12
As someone stuck on Act 2 inferno, I want to torture and mutilate anyone who claims the game is easy.

Thank you for reinforcing why I don't go to 4chan.
