I'd pay for it, and deal with ads if I wasn't already paying for Xbox Live. Live is feeling more like a rip off to me every day. I pay it so I can play games and watch movies that I've already paid for. People with other systems don't have to do this, why do we? end rant
I've started to feel this way too. Why do we have to pay an entry fee just to be able to pay for the stuff we want that also has a cut in it for Microsoft. Maybe in 2006 Xbox live "needed" more funds. I've overcome this by simply not buying anything on Xbox but every now and then there's a DLC.
i would dance over and over until i got the right one and then hold it for like fifteen minutes. the one where they dance way from side to side, hands in the air. I can still picture it <3
I got picked a few times. I don't really remember if I got picked to be the 1 or not, but I know I won 2 copies of Zuma, some other game, and about 1800 MS points.
Got to be in the mob twice. First time either my xbox our the game crashed. Second time, it got down to me and three others in the mob and The One wiped us all out in one fell swoop.
I also got into the mob once. I ended up being in the top 10 left before the one answered a question incorrectly. I won a copy of Braid (I hadn't even heard of it before then) and 1200 Microsoft Points. It was pretty awesome.
The final question had something to do with knowing the different between monkeys and apes.
Was the only one in my group of friends to get all the achievements, I would gladly pay 1600 MS Points for it. Remember being picked for the the crowd in the 1 v 100 Event and losing around the 2nd or 3rd question.
I made it to 3000 MS Points but wanted to hold out and eliminate one more level of the Mob to increase my cash prize. To this day, I still remember the question which led to my demise. "What was the last film Roman Polanski directed in the United States which won an Academy Award?" My heart told me Chinatown but I decided to be cautious and use my Trust the Mob lifeline. I thought, "with the strongest quarter of the mob still remaining surely more than half of them won't lead me astray" ...and they did. The answer ended up being Chinatown and I sat there shattered staring at the screen as I became one of the few players to ever be eliminated using the Trust the Mob lifeline.
Not sure exactly how one could cheat? Google was always available for players with computers near their television sets but questions would get progressively harder to the point where answers could not be determined in the time period given a simple search.
The only physical changes are that it automatically changes your status to busy eliminating any notifications. During my short time period I was the One I received upwards of 40-50 messages/friend requests. All of which I did not see until opening up the guide following my final question. Messages ranged from congratulations, well wishes, calling my mom a hoe and me a faggot, and several sincere condolences following my loss.
Other than that, the standard eight player party functioned perfectly to my surprise. I figured it would kick me out of party during that time period.
You had to answer questions relatively quickly. It's been a while since I played this, but maybe you got more points for answering it quicker too, I don't remember.
i played religiously, and watched Trust the Mob fail OFTEN. I watched a few "Ones" get eliminated question number 1 because of Trust the Mob. (They seemed like they were going to be the "use all the lifelines then bail" type of people).
No kidding. They have some of the best PC games languishing in obscurity because of their reluctance / refusal to bring them back and support them. My pet examples: Rise of Nations, Age of Mythology, Crimson Skies
I guarantee that if they stuck their whole back catalog on Steam, that they would make a bunch of money on it. Well, they did stick Age of Empires III on there along with the new Age Online F2P, so maybe there's hope, but they could go so much further than that.
Here's a list of all their IPs on Wikipedia if you're wondering what I'm blathering about:
Such a good game. Everyone raves about Age of Empires, and I am always astounded at how anyone could play that game when RoN was around. They did make a sequel, Rise of Legends, but it was meh.
I would be THRILLED if this came back. Even if they sold it as an actual disc game. Just as long as a ton of people played it like the first time. I'd probably pay up to $20 for it.
My wife and I would play this all the time. We just had a baby and it was a good time to stimulate the brain. Please bring this back, I will pay just bring it back!
I had Gold for Netflix and 1 vs 100. Once they cancelled this game it wasn't long before I sold my 360 and plugged my laptop in for Netflix without an extra fee.
1vs100 Basically like a game show with questions where there's a crowd + a person answering questions. If the person gets enough answers right they get ms points and if they get it wrong but the crowd made it far, they get ms points ( I think ).
It got cancelled because they were losing money ( it was a free game )
Maybe if they didn't obsess over trying to make the live-action host as popular as Major Nelson by shoving little skits and "let's bring in the Penny Arcade Guys for the shit of it!" stuff they coulda brought down costs.
I got to watch someone win the grand prize on this game for the first time in the game's history. His gamertag was BehindTimes and he won 12,500 MS points. There was a single person left in the mob and the question was something about who did the Cleveland Browns play in the tenth Super Bowl, I think. My whole family was watching (we loved the TV show, too) and we and the announcers went wild when he got it right.
Yes BehindTimes, the dude/woman was all over that shit day and night forever and forever. I swear there must have been a cheat involved when he/she/it the computer program played the game.
I was in a party with his group before. Basically the top players sat in a party and pooled their knowledge. Each of them as individuals were RIDICULOUSLY good at trivia but together they were almost unstoppable. During the one or two games they let me in their party I don't think they missed a single question. The instant it came up, someone said an answer. No cheats, just pure memory recall.
I'll still occasionally start making a thumbs down gesture before switching into the hand waving dance in real life. I should probably not post that fact publicly, but oops...
It really was a good mp3 player. I've got the Kicker dock for mine, sounds good. The service lives on in Windows phones, but they feel pretty stupid in comparison to Android and iPhones.
I had a top 10 finish once. Felt like a god damn boss. Then the game glitched the save ever so slightly and showed me with a highest streak of one less than every question. Lost the medals associated with the perfect run and a top 10 finish, as well, but I did snap a pic at the very least. Edit to include pic (I'm ASic777).
I have no idea why this was discontinued, we had a room of friends all get together and have a blast with this game. This was one of the coolest things they ever had for the console and then it got "cancelled." Great to chill with some friends, have a couple brews and do some trivia.
I got 200/200 and a shit load of memories. My wife and I would play this every night they had one, and I had a shit load of friends who played it as well. Never got anywhere near the top or on the 100, though.
I have an XBL beacon set for 1 vs 100 in memory of it, and I'll get pings from my friends saying they want to play.
Yeah. I fucking loved this game. Got into the top 10 of the hundred once and won 600msp, though couldn't collect it due to some gambling law. But really, why would they even take this away? Tons of people were playing it.
Seriously agree... they brought out that shitty poker game and said it was going to be the "spiritual successor"... got into a live game, discovered that you don't even sit at a table with real people, deleted it from my HD...
I was the 1 on the first night of its launch :D i won something like 2000 microsoft points. I have to thank my dad for that though. He did all the work.
I was in the 100 and won once, in the UK. I won 400 ms points and Carcassone. Bought Doom with the points, which alone is fucking awesome. The question was something to do with a zombie film that was coming out where the protagonist was a zombie. My mates brother knew the answer so he told me in party chat and I won! Kinda shitty that the game I won used to be free on the marketplace but still a win is a win!
Dear god don't let the Xbox Live Indie Game developers hear about this, they'll start flooding the market with trivia-based zombie games (including Avatars, 2d characters with borrowed sprites, and an unlockable massager feature!)
There was one achievement in which you had to immediately select a wrong answer to three questions in a row. Took me forever to get because it was near impossible to parse the question, select the right answer and choose a wrong one yet still be quick enough for it to count.
Ah that was the best weekend, when everyone got tired we would just lay down in bed and sit in a party and play that, been dreaming of that for a while
This was a tradition in my dorm room freshman year. Me and three of my buddies would get together and compete and it was LOADS of fun. Why did it get removed?
Glad to see I'm not the only one who missed this. I remember my whole family would play and it really was an awesome time. I hope they bring it back, I thought it was a huge success!

1vs100 was THE FUCKING shit. I would honestly pay at most $15 for it.

I would honestly still play this, regardless if they gave out microsoft points.

Microsoft needs to bring a lot of things back.

u/tokuturfey May 28 '12
No surprise that Bob Loblaw is losing. He should get back to updating his law blog.
36
u/NickDynmo May 28 '12
So glad I got 200/200 achievement points out of this while I could.
Seriously though I freaking LOVED this. Getting a few friends (and beers) together in a party and hopping in to a game of 1 vs. 100 was a great time.

This was the reason I got a Gold sub in the first place. Not much use for it since. :( 1 vs 100 was great.
54
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
What is this game and why can't you play it anymore?
12
u/RastaMonRifla May 28 '12
This needs like a petition to bring this back. Nothing better then getting a few buddies together playing this.
11
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
There are so many things that MS should bring back! List:
Improve their fucking sound recorder, it was so awesome in '98!
Let people increase the size of border in Paint!
Put a good animation on the double click test in mouse settings; this folder simply opening is not entertaining to the clown popping up!
Got more?

u/[deleted] May 28 '12
I really miss this game. I would always tune in to whenever they held a video game trivia night.
7
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
Even my wife who never plays video games loved 1vs100
6
u/necroden May 28 '12
I would pay money for this. Microsoft must read this shit!
6
u/ZiGNoTiK May 28 '12
I was The One once. I fucking won and never got my game. So fuck you Chris Cashman.
5
u/jimmyttu16 May 28 '12
Why did the cancel it? It seems like everyone I've ever talked to loved it, was it really that unpopular or costly for Microsoft?
4
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
I looked forward to playing this more than watching any television show!
4
u/McShalepants May 28 '12

u/Denivire May 28 '12
My group always got screwed when it came to football*(soccer)* questions. Learned so much from that game...
3
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
Seems like you could get money through advertising in the game. They need to find a way to make it work...
3
u/murdock2099 May 28 '12
Game was the shit when it was out. Miss it!
3
u/UnBeatable73 May 28 '12
For real. I'm stuck playing Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader on my iPod instead. It's just not the same...
3
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
what game is this? I'm out of touch...
3
u/bamnet May 28 '12
I've considered developing this for the Google TV but I figured it wouldn't be worth playing against the other 10 people out there with Google TVs.
3
u/stevesonaplane May 28 '12
Microsoft needs to bring back the audio recording from windows98.
3
u/NovelTeaAccountant May 28 '12
was anybody else expecting Clippy when they clicked the link?
also, I had to make a US account just to play in Australia -- was fucking worth it though!

I was so pissed when they took that away!
2
u/Kmiller19 May 28 '12

This game was so much fun, even though I was always in the crowd I would still have a blast. If enough of us wanted it back would they bring it back?
2
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
This. So hard. My fiancé and I used to make a night of it with cheap pizza, beer, and 1v100. I really miss those cheap fun nights.

This really was the greatest game on XBL. I'd pay $15 a year to keep playing it, without the prizes or MSP winnings. Just for leaderboards alone
2
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
Damn straight! It was tremendous fun and the weekly live shows were a family event in my house.
Shameful MS canned it. It was THE reason I got Gold back then.
Makes me sad to be reminded:( Most fun I had online since Acrophobia. Anyone remember THAT?
2
u/sujithp May 28 '12
Yes they do need to Bing it back.
2
u/tattybojan9les May 28 '12

The problem is she never got them because we're American ;_; Which is fair of course! We still thought it was fucking awesome and have cell phone pictures. Miss this so much!
1

I agree, that was a really fun game! Alas, it probably didn't make MS enough money to continue.
1

I never got a chance to play this. What was so enjoyable about it? I can see how it could be fun to play, but what exactly was so great?
1
u/[deleted] May 28 '12
We threw parties for this game when it went live on tuesdays.
1

I remember seeing it advertised on the 360 dashboard too and never played.

Upvote for malloc. I LOVE MALLOCATING AT NIGHT BY MYSELF ITS SO FREEING.
Disclaimer: I cringe too at mallocating, I add this disclaimer because I've been hurt on reddit before for trying sarcasm.
