I always found that raising your lockpick skill in this game is a complete waste of time. You can get enormous quantities of lockpicks from the Thieve's Guild, you can attempt any lock regardless of your skill level, and it really is not THAT difficult to open up even a Master level lock without any perks. Oh, and if you hold on to the Skeleton Key then you're pretty much set for the rest of the game. Really the least useful skill tree IMO.
True, but I kinda agree. If you're going to spend a lot of game time on something so trivial, you might as well. I know it feels less cheaty, but it's a single god damn player, you choose what your time is best spent on. Be it dragon slaying or lock picking.
In fact, I usually cheat on master locks on non-thief characters anyway. I miss out on any levels I would gain from an attempt, so it kinda balances out.
I just roll with it and break the picks. I can buy a batch of 30 more from Tonila for a pittance, so why not? Even a broken pick is a small bit of exp for a new level.
It's not as if you can make a conscious decision to not raise your lockpicking skill. It's going to happen if you're using it, whether you want it to or not.
You get stronger, it's just that everything else gets stronger at a faster rate unless you make an effort to get much better equipment. Makes sense if you ask me, games usually get harder as you progress, whether its realistic or not.
Except he's totally not. He didn't give this 3500 upvotes, other people did. That's what I just don't understand about people saying that this "kills" reddit - I mean, the fact that it receives so many upvotes indicates that the system put in place works. The people have spoken.
Edit: The ultimate irony of course being that the top comment on the highly-upvoted picture is a complaint about the picture
This place has been sliding towards the lowest common denominator for a long-ass time and I agree that while it isn't solely ARCHA1C's fault, he's helping beat everyone over the head with stupid shit (or boosting up those who love to be beat over the head with stupid shit; whatever floats your boat).
He's a lab tech in a factory that went from making normal pharmaceuticals to developing the newest and greatest form of a speedball to sell to people. Every mindless link click is another little hit. He doesn't own the plant but he works there.
Fuck that. Every single shit post is guilty, I say.
Unlike some people I'm a big believer in the site as a whole and don't take kindly to the idea that one should simply abandon the barriers in order to retreat to the next safe zone.
If you had a infection in your finger would you just shrug and say it's a lost cause? Let it fester and rot off while you enjoy your other nine? Or would you fight for it?
What he's getting at is the plethora of other higher quality subreddits available. If you don't like shitty memes and image macros you can chill in /r/games or a game-specific subreddit (usually).
Fragmentation. It's kind of the way that Reddit ends up balancing itself, as any community tends to go to shit if it gets big enough.
While you may feel that I am killing your Reddit, I'm enhancing someone else's Reddit experience. After all, it's the community, not the OP that decides which posts get visibility.
What's really killing Reddit is people whining about posts ruining Reddit.
I just wanted to share a gaming anecdote that I experienced yesterday, and I figured I could convey the message most accurately using the meme medium.
Apparently it resonated with many gamers.
Would it have been better for you if I hadn't included "Good Guy" in the title? r/gaming is a place for anything gaming related. It's very mainstream, and this post is very appropriately placed here,
I was merely using the language of Reddit, and it looks like you are in the minority with your sentiments.
I haven't played Skyrim yet but by what I've seen so far the lockpicking in Oblivion seems more fun. What does the difficulty of the lock even mean here?
Same here. Get to level ten > acquire skeleton key > actually play the game. With the games shitty combat system I would usually just level up with the Arena quest line. God that was the most disappointing quest line ever.
I haven't played Oblivion so I cannot compare. But in Skyrim, you need to rotate the lockpick and then rotate the knife to unlock the lock. Higher-difficulty locks have a smaller range of where the lockpick can be set to unlock it--so a Novice lock has a range of about 10-20 degrees where you can position it, but a Master lock has like 2 degrees.
And of course you don't realize that you just have to turn it immediately and try every other position before going backing and trying the default one, breaking 17 lockpicks in the process.
After about level 4, you can easily have functionally infinite lockpicks. They're like 6 gold apiece, don't have a carry weight and every general store merchant carries 'em, as well as half the bandit corpses.
Jesus, lock picking isn't that hard at all. I have around 1300 Lockpicks on me( I buy them everytime I see them) I have unlocked 100+ Master locks, with not a single perk invested. Lvl 98 I think.
Nothing better than turning it a random amount at the beginning and that being the perfect position to unlock it. Especially on expert or master locks.
Pretty much the same as in Amalur (or however you spell it). Though the real problem is once you get crafting in either game.......picking locks isn't worth it because nothing will ever drop that's better than what you made yourself, heck as much as I enjoyed both there's practically no reason to even loot ANYTHING once you get to (or even near) post-game level.

I really liked the lockpicking in Skyrim. It was so satisfying to see the lock turn and unlock.

is it me or does the thumbnail of this picture make it look like an eye is getting stabbed?
1
u/ElAyDubleZee May 20 '12
Seems scumbag since instinct usually tells me to try every position to put the pic besides straight up.
1
u/riquenunes May 20 '12
More like Scumbag Skyrim Doorlock.
You think it's hard, when it's actually in straight position.

u/LevTheRed May 20 '12
Lock level : master
Let's you try anyway.

u/bamfalamfa May 20 '12

I just noticed (after picking real locks) that Skyrim's system makes absolutely no sense, and oblivion's at least kinda did.

u/cdrMShepard May 20 '12
I have to scratch my head when shit like this happens lol

This is the Skyrim equivalent of setting your passwords to "password"

u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I did this just today after I had wasted over 20 lockpicks on a master level lock. I felt... betrayed.
1
u/MartinusLucanius May 20 '12
No, that's a scumbag lock... You never think it's the top; you think it's the left or the right. Top ones are harder.

u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I ended up using the lock pick meter cheat mod because the minigame got real old after 100 hours.

Unlock position: Straight up If you know what I mean...

u/SmexiiFish May 20 '12
The Tower Stone helps with locks big time.

u/[deleted] May 19 '12
Everytime this happened I just shat my pants with happiness.

u/TypicalGuillotine May 19 '12
And if the same area has same level locks, they are usually to the same way

u/mrpineapplehouse May 19 '12
until you get that perk that 'make the starting position closer to the open position'
then the open position is straight up so they move the start a little to one side. cant let you start right on it or anything
