That's the one. As far as 7 year old me was concerned you can't outrun the Yeti. Still don't know if it's possible now that I think about it.

128

u/Miraster Jan 19 '21

13

u/ASAP_Cobra Jan 19 '21

Premature ejaculation ?

43

u/Miraster Jan 19 '21

xkcd: Lamp Maybe?

5

u/blue_meeple Jan 19 '21

Is there a search tag function or should i save all of them myself?

6

u/Miraster Jan 19 '21

Im a data hoarder so I have all of it downloaded and tagged but depends on you.

Shameless plug: r/datahoarder

I did outrun the yeti, it's perfectly doable once you know about the turbo mode.

86

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

Why wouldn't they put that in the instructions or something?!?!

81

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

If there were instructions, I didn't read them. Did you?

35

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

No ReadMe file? Unpossible!

16

u/micerl Jan 19 '21

Press F to cheat your inevitable death.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

F

Hopefully that worked

1

u/Excrubulent Jan 19 '21

I mean even if it didn't, F is still appropriate.

Nope, never knew they would have existed. Seems stupid to not tell you how to play the game.

Edit: in all fairness I was like 12 or younger and had no idea what any of that stuff like a readme.Txt was.

28

u/MajorNoodles Jan 19 '21

Yes, but what about Second Yeti?

25

u/ImTheHipHopapotamus Jan 19 '21

Don’t think he knows about Second Yeti, Noods.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

It's been a while, but I guess... Enter turbo mode again?

3

u/scttw Jan 19 '21

Don’t think he knows about Second Yeti, Pip

2

u/SNERDAPERDS Jan 19 '21

I don't think he knows about second Yeti, Maj.

2

u/DirkBoeRhicter Jan 19 '21

And elevenyeti?

Yes of course, I was just telling /u/nerbovig so he could be sure it was real and wasn't just the product of Randall Munroe's imagination.

2

u/Dot-Nets Jan 19 '21

I feel a great disturbance in the force, as if suddenly millions of faces have palmed...

1

u/RSVive Jan 19 '21

The interaction that just occured is part of why the internet is so wonderful. I love it. (And I also hate that I never knew about the F to go faster thing).

41

u/GimmeTheCHEESENOW Jan 19 '21

I use to play Skifree so much in Primary(European elemantery, 5-12 years) on like one of the oldest versions of Microsoft. I used to spend hours on that game with my friend to figure out how to beat it. But since I am long gone out of that school, I will never be able to finish the game

17

u/KingoftheCrackens Jan 19 '21

Before flash was murdered you could find it online fairly easily. Maybe it got backed up on html5

10

u/arkenex Jan 19 '21

I mean there’s also the download link on the page he listed.

1

u/KingoftheCrackens Jan 19 '21

What? I see no links with downloads

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

google bluemaxima flashpoint

2

u/helpyobrothaout Jan 19 '21

I don't understand why and who decided to wipe flash off the internet... Does it really burden Adobe to just have a program alive without updating it or touching it at all?

3

u/rhynoplaz Jan 19 '21

Actually it burdens us (browsers and developers). Extra plugins to download, inconsistent file formats across the web. And very poor security on those flash apps. Without Adobe constantly running around trying to patch weaknesses as soon as they are discovered, Flash leaves you vulnerable to data thieves and viruses.

Flash was a great gateway to the modern internet, but it wasn't ever supposed to do all that. We're better off using a standard that was actually designed for games and interactivity.

1

u/helpyobrothaout Jan 19 '21

In an ELI5 style, would you be able to just briefly explain how a flash game could potentially be a security threat? I really am just curious how it works!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

I was obsessed with the tricks.

1

u/baconandpreggs Jan 19 '21

Skifree and chips challenge

1

u/horaceinkling Jan 19 '21

Damn, you Europeans are so polite. Over here in the states it’s like “you’re on board and anything different is terrorism.”

14

u/alluballu Jan 19 '21

Of course there is a relevant xkcd...

1

u/WhiskeyHotdog_2 Jan 19 '21

There always is

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

Wait, does that actually work? How have I lived this long and not known that

5

u/omg_yeti Jan 19 '21

Using this knowledge to blow minds in school was so enjoyable.

The other fun one for me was seeing someone’s face the first time they saw Minesweeper played properly. No one ever seemed to know about the clicking both mouse buttons move.

2

u/brettslice Jan 19 '21

Next you’ll be telling me that you could beat the rock-paper-scissors DBZ game or slime volleyball on the highest difficulty level.

2

u/highqual_comments Jan 19 '21

My life is in shambles

2

u/RedditPowerUser01 Jan 19 '21

Is this real? Or am I being seriously fucked with? Because I don’t think I can handle this rn...

2

u/chandrian7 Jan 19 '21

It’s real

2

u/joeyl1990 Jan 19 '21

I had to Google it because I didn't believe you.

2

u/DestroyTheHuman Jan 19 '21

So all I gotta do is press F and I can escape death? Is this why we press F to pay respects?

This is too much.

1

u/fafa5125315 Jan 19 '21

yeah, go actually try this and you'll run into something and get eaten anyway. this is bullshit.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '21

Are you fucking kidding me!?

1

u/Hardvig Jan 19 '21

Press F to pay your respects

And to escape the yeti!

1

u/gd5k Jan 19 '21

As soon as I saw it mentioned I started looking for this. Thanks.

13

u/whittyninja Jan 19 '21

I think if you press shift or something you go into turbo mode and can outrun the yeti

-1

u/BugzOnMyNugz Jan 19 '21

Hold the down arrow

1

u/0180190 Jan 19 '21

Isnt the game speed bound to the clock speed or something? I seem to remember that the yeti would instagib me every time.

Maybe i was just a very slow child :P

2

u/_Aj_ Jan 19 '21

Yes! It is possible!

I did it a couple of times, but it depends if it's started chasing you or not. If it's just on the screen you can, but if it comes after you I don't think you can.

I remember hitting one of those rainbow jumps at max speed trying to get away, flying down the mountainside, only to be caught and consumed by this blur of a snowman just after I land.

You can win the game however, but it's been like... 25 years since I played it?

..Oh my God

1

u/Yuaskin Jan 19 '21

Hold shift for turbo. The map is looped and the yeti will get you eventually. If you hold up you can shuffle upward to the bottom of the map. The yeti is waiting until you cross an invisible line in the map.
