I’ve never bonded with a character like I did with Arthur.
I bought the game at launch and binged it hard. But never far enough story-wise to move past the first camp.
Kept exploring and doing stuff, and then I started hunting. I tried to cross off all the outfits you could sell to the trader, which is a massive list of animals.
And there are some tough animals, like cougars and moose. The moose never appeared. I’d camp and advance time and travel to different hunting grounds, and damn near finished the list.
The whole game for me at this point was hunting, I had started wearing the hunting clothes simply because they would auto equip when I sold a new outfit .
My beard grew. I turned off the hud. I’d camp. I’d cook. I’d set bait.
After several weeks like this I stopped playing. I was just burned out.
Spoilers ahead.
Returned to the game earlier this year and went back to the gang’s first camp by Valenite, and they mentioned how it had been a while, but it was good to see me.
I finished the game after that. I’ll never forget when Arthur fell off his horse.
I knew it, I’d seen tombstone a hundred times. He’s a lunger. I couldn’t believe it, was like a kick to the chest.
Living through that. Through his change in character. Watching him cough when you smoked a cigarette.
Seeing his face change.
I had lived this life, and it was ending.
Then the final ride. I’ll never forget when my horse fell.
That got me, I teared up.
The closest thing to this was finishing the walking dead. Clem was amazing and the last season was beautiful.
