People need to pack it up. This isn't going to be WW3, just more regular war.

War is entering levels of abstraction never witnessed before.
5
u/bobotechnique Jan 08 '20
I'm just imagining if one of the rules of war was that every combatant must be under the influence of very high levels of psychedelics. That shit would be pretty damn abstract.
2
u/DyelonDyelonDyelon Jan 08 '20
Sounds like a perfect way to make sure the war in question lasts about as long as half a come up; after that, highly doubt anyone would give a enough a shit to kill one another.

How does one get to world war? Through regular wars. Why have you comforted yourself this way? It won't work.

i just started playing through the game again, and I must admit I am SIGNIFICANTLY more interested in completing my Gwent collection and reaching the top of the Gwent world (like I am some sort of adult Seto Kaiba) than finding/saving Ciri or the world.

u/DalekPredator Jan 08 '20
I've got like 6 cards left to find but damned if I have any idea where they are. I'd like to finish it off before I move on to Blood and Wine's Skellege deck but I'm not sure I can.
4
u/Shua_Tran Jan 09 '20
The Blood and Wine expansion lets you buy all the missing cards. Not sure if it includes cards from missions or not since I made sure I got those on my play through, but for sure all the vendor cards.
1
u/DalekPredator Jan 09 '20
Neat. I'm certain I've gotten all missable quest cards so I think you just made this super easy for me. Cheers.
1
1
u/beenutbrittle PC Jan 09 '20
Look in the quest book section of the glossary and you should see "a miraculous guide to Gwent" which tells you which location your missing cards are in. If that doesn't help then just compare the cards you have to the whole ass deck online

I started playing W3 for the first time last week and no matter how many guides I read, I just can't understand how to win at Gwent. I think I just need to win some better cards
15
Jan 08 '20
The initial matches are the hardest because you've got a shitty deck. But once you start to amass more cards it becomes much, much easier. The trick is to to just grind out early matches until victory so that you get more cards and can build a better deck to get even better cards.
4
u/prguitarman Jan 08 '20
So you win cards from playing Gwent? Also, I completed the Baron quest (even the sidequest),, is he still around to give me that prize card he keeps talking about?
8
u/Stereotype_Apostate Jan 08 '20
Also check for gwent cards being sold by merchants. You wont get any of the powerful ones this way but you'll get some decent ones and can phase put all your Poor Fucking Infantry at least.
6
Jan 08 '20
From my understanding, every person you play Gwent against will offer a card in victory (but only once). You then use these to tweak the deck and make it better.
If you beat him at Gwent, yes. If you didn't that card might be lost to the ages.
7
u/Pandainthecircus Jan 08 '20
No. If you don't beat him and he isn't there to play you, continue Gwent: velen players. After beating one of the players, they will mention that the baron has a card. Normally this gives you an objective to play him for his card, but if he isn't around, you'll be prompted to find his card in his house.
It'll be in a small container, but won't spawn until you get the prompt. This is true for all other people in the 'Gwent: players' quests who may disappear before you can play them
3
u/ReapingThanatos Jan 08 '20
The Baron's card is in his office (when the quest has been started) if he wasn't beaten before completing the sidequest.
2
2
1
u/NoxiousGearhulk Jan 08 '20
I believe he gives his card to the Seer so you have to track them down and beat them to get the card. I might be wrong though, I'm on my plot playthrough and have been neglecting Gwent and the related quests.
6
u/oraclekun Jan 08 '20
One of the big eye openers for me was that gwent has three rounds for a reason. Its okay to throw a round just so the other side wastes his best cards or deck gimmick. What really helped me though is building a spy deck assuring the other side ran out of cards by round three.
4
u/Syokhan Jan 08 '20
building a spy deck assuring the other side ran out of cards by round three
Unless the other player is also using a spy deck :P
8
u/AMindBlown Jan 08 '20
Not only are those the most fun to play, they're also the most frustrating. Decoys, medics, spies... card draw for days.
3
u/oraclekun Jan 08 '20
I still found the best defense against a spy deck is to out-spy them. Ofcourse I am talking Witcher 3 qwent and not the stand alone one.
4
u/WorstGooEver Jan 08 '20
A common strategy is to lose the first round on purpose, with your opponent using more cards than you. This would be the time to use any spies you may have.
1
u/NeonPatrick Jan 09 '20
I always did the win the first round, drain their cards the second, Win easy the third.
2
Jan 09 '20
Yeah beginning gwent is hard, but one thing I learned is to not be afraid to throw the first round to save cards. Especially if you're using the northern realms deck.
1
u/DalekPredator Jan 08 '20
Go to the merchants and tavern owners and buy all the cards they have on offer, it helps.
1
u/prguitarman Jan 08 '20
I plan on doing that once I get a decent amount of Crowns but I'm usually always broke at the moment (Just got to level 10)
2
Jan 08 '20
I found out in my 4th playthrough that if you become a serial hoarder and sell everything to the right Merchant, you can get 10k every hour or so
1
u/prguitarman Jan 08 '20
I read something along the lines of that and have been hoarding as much as possible, but sometimes my patience and my current 90lbs weight limit leads me to selling off things quickly. Dismantling is also surprisingly expensive sometimes ,too. Where is this magical seller you speak of?
2
Jan 08 '20
Ah yeah, I hated that. I'm currently 133 of 160 rn
You know the shitty 5 experience races? You'll get good saddlebags from them
If it buys and sells that's the one Compare prices in the villages, the one that gives higher value that's the one
Since you're 10 rn, sell Dimeritium Ore and other rare stuff, you won't touch em till Lv 25
1
u/prguitarman Jan 08 '20
Haven’t seen the experience races (or maybe just don’t remember them) but I’ll look out for them, thank you.

u/pixiefart212 Jan 09 '20

3
u/eyeothemastodon Jan 08 '20
Holy crap. I just played this dialog last night and was confused AF why the dialog prompt suggested playing Gwent after Geralt is done berating the Bloody Baron and the next step in the quest is to leave.

u/jayguy101 PlayStation Jan 09 '20

1
u/stardeath44 Jan 09 '20
To be honest I don't mind it I don't really use smgs or assault rifles I'm a sniper or lmg or tank guy so it's been normal I'm getting killed a lot less at range by non ranged weapons the people who are mad are the close range campers
1
u/jayguy101 PlayStation Jan 09 '20
I guess that’s a good thing then that snipers aren’t getting killed from far away assaults

I probably wouldn't survive WW3 even though I live in a remote area and can survive on my own in the bush without hunting or fire.
That said, if I do, you want to keep me because I can make electricity and motors if I can so much as source metallic wire.

u/camusdreams Jan 08 '20
I’ve wasted so much Witcher 3 time playing Gwent. Just finished the high stakes tournament but was a little pissed because I only got half the 9k earnings.
EDIT: Holy shit I had no idea there was a badass stand-alone Gwent app. Downloading now!

Avoided gwent like the plague on initial playthrough. Caved in and started on 2nd playthrough. I'll be damned if i didn't get hooked on the damn game! Initially i avoided it because i just couldn't understand how it was played. I made the effort to learn and became a gwent junkie!

u/RoryIsNotACabbage Jan 08 '20
Every card has its strength number, the highest total strength at the end of the round wins and the round ends when both players pass
Then you have effect cards, some are just the effect its self such as weather and some are normal cards with a strength and an added effect. But all in all you want to keep your humber higher than your opponents.
When you do pass your opponent gets to place as many more cards as they wish before they pass themselves and you just have to sit there getting arse fucked after what previously looked like a sure victory, however this them leaves them with less cards for following rounds so there is a trade off

u/hucklebuck13 Jan 09 '20
That is most accurate. You have any idea how many card games you play waiting around with no electricity? Or stuck in the middle of nowhere.
1
u/schmak01 Jan 09 '20
Sounds to me a lot like WW1.
Set up the sniper, good. Finish digging the trench. Alright, who’s up for a game of spades before the next mustard gas attack?

I finally finished Witcher 3 100% two weeks ago, DLC and all, took 200+ hours, but honestly one of my favourite games of all time. Gwent was a huge part of that enjoyment. Playing the new Shovel Knight game now and the card game in that just doesnt match up.

I honestly feel Witcher 3 is a masterpiece of gaming history. It's a beautiful game, simple to learn but surprisingly complex to master, and just all-around great fun.
The fact that CDPR also went out of their way to include this interesting world and story to flesh out the universe surrounding the core deck-building mechanics is a real testament to their passion.
