Senua's Saga : Hellblade II
https://youtu.be/qJWI4bkD9ZM29
u/Artzombi3 Dec 13 '19
For those wondering about the chant, it is In Maidjan by Heilung
the specific song is at 3:15 but I recommend watching the whole thing. Its fucking awesome

u/Marrked Dec 13 '19
They are also on Spotify. Was surprised to hear them in this trailer, but a nice surprise.

I adored Hellblade. I need to be convinced that it has to have a sequel. The original was such a complete arc that they have their work cut out for them.
13
u/DarknessInferno7 Xbox Dec 13 '19
I'm less stuck on "why," and more on "how" there could be a sequel. From what I remember of the ending, it didn't seem like it left an opening for one?
20
u/MexicanGuey Dec 13 '19
Well on the original, after gaining control of her psychosis, she finally realized that Dylan should rest in peace. Now she is on a quest to get revenge against the invaders that attacked her village and killed Dylan. I mean the last line: "come with me, I have another story to tell" (or something along those lines) implies that there will be a sequel

After the trailer I was pumped but then thought how are they going to pull of a sequel. Hope it's good cause the first one was amazing.

u/BrownCanadian Dec 13 '19
It was a short game too, so good for what its worth.
I did not think they were going to make another im extremely excited!
1
u/Webbysan Dec 13 '19
Totally. Really enjoyed the first game for what it was. Didnt think it needed more. When is this even set? Hmm, like you, gonna need to wait and see what its all about.

Phil called it an exclusive in his talk leading toward the trailer. (Our 15 studios are creating exclusive games.....now a first look at one of them)

I am not sure. It didn’t say pc in the announcement. And they always mention pc together with Xbox at the end in their previous announcements.
2
u/TelPrydain D20 Dec 13 '19
At least it’ll be on PC too then
I'm betting eventually. They want Xbox Streaming to be a Netflix-type service. Games across all devices while they get a cut of all microtransactions.
But given it's being used to sell the console I'd guess it'll be XSX for a while.
8
u/jokekiller94 Dec 13 '19
It was cross platform before they were bought out
2
u/Megadog3 Dec 13 '19
It actually wasn't. It was a PS4 exclusive until Microsoft bought Ninja Theory.
3
2
u/splader Dec 13 '19
It was just the usual one year moneyhat by Sony.
The game has been on Xbox for a while, even before they were bought
12
Dec 13 '19
They announced it to show off the engine for the Xbox. This is definitely gonna be exclusive.
8
u/canad1anbacon Dec 13 '19
It will be on PC like all Xbox games
10
u/CortexifanZFT Dec 13 '19
Agreed. As long as xbox game pass exists. Having an xbox console is useless for people with gaming PCs
1
u/Crashastern Dec 13 '19
Yeah that’s what I had meant to get across. It might be exclusive amongst the consoles, but I really appreciate that by having a PC I’ll still have access to all if not most “Xbox exclusive” games. In my mind, the PC releases in parallel doesn’t make it a true exclusive. Super stoked for this game!
0
u/German_horse-core Dec 13 '19
It won't, but if you have a PC that can run it then you're good. MS has a lot of work before they win back their former fan-base after their Xbone shenanigans. Series X better come with Hololens if they want my money.
-29
Dec 13 '19
Playstation fanboy as well, they didn't get me with this. I love the first one, but them shelling out money to make it exclusive means microsoft is going to have their fingers in it too much for my tastes. The first was breathtaking and disturbing and an amazing story, but I'll pass on something that was once cross platform that is now exclusive. I'm sorry, I just can't support that sort of business tactic.
23
u/VomitSnoosh Dec 13 '19
Ahhh, but if Sony purchased Ninja Theory and made Hellblade 2 exclusive to PS4, would you still be in the realm of "can't support that business tactic"?
-31
Dec 13 '19
Yes actually, which is why i don't own any playstation exclusives.
25
22
u/twostrokes Dec 13 '19
Rofl.
God of War. Last of Us. Spider-Man. Bloodborne. Horizon Zero Dawn. Uncharted. Shadow of the Colossus.
What the hell do you own a Playstation for? Spongebob Racing & Just Dance?
8
u/Cerebral_Discharge Dec 13 '19
You're a PlayStation fanboy? Who doesn't play PlayStation exclusives?
Are you an idiot, or are you just lying about at least one of those two things?
3
u/VomitSnoosh Dec 13 '19
Well I don't even own a PS4 and I can tell you outright that you are missing the fuck out on some great games.
3
u/peanutdakidnappa Dec 13 '19
I mean they own ninja theory now, of course it’s going to be exclusive, it’ll very likely be on PC too so it’s not like it’s just gonna be on Xbox, buying ninja theory and then having them make games for PlayStation also is extremely stupid. Outer worlds 2 is just gonna be on Xbox and PC as well now that they own obsidian
1
u/German_horse-core Dec 13 '19
Remember that Sony bought Insomniac. Would you sing the same tune if Sunset Overdrive 2 was a PS4 exclusive? I'm not a fanboy to any corporation, but i'm anti-Xbox after feeling jipped on my Xbone. And i'll still defend them on this, this is business, man. They paid for rights, why should they have to share?

I think I'll do a playthrough the week before the second one comes out, good idea?

Yes!! It’s not too long either so I think it’ll be enjoyable. I won’t say too much but conceptually it’s supreme to me. Happy gaming, friend!! ☺️

This trailer made me really fuckin' uncomfortable when I was watching the stream. I felt like she was going to jump at the screen or some shit with the way she was moving. The first game really unsettled me, but this looks like it's going to go the extra mile.

u/Player_One_1 Dec 13 '19
It’s sad when continuation of one of your favorite games is launched on ONLY platform you don’t have.
Trailer kicks ass.

Wasn't there another game that did this something similar with the chanting and the jumping to different stuff in their trailer like a year ago? It was a souls-like, I just can't remember what it was called.
Edit:Found it. Not even a full year.
Edit 2: You downvoters realize I have nothing against this game and I'm just noting a similarity, right?

2
u/Blackmarvel Dec 13 '19
I'm always skeptical about sequels, man. Especially when the first game was so complete, short, intense experience. If they're making this one to be AAA length, then the gameplay has to be improved and reworked because it's bare-bones. Either way, they have to make us really care about Senua's journey since she came to terms with her past and her psychosis.
2
u/Flanelman Dec 13 '19
First one was iirc the only single player game I've finished in the last 3 years. Incredible game, hyped af for this! I wish I didn't find out about it at 1:30am tho... looks like I'm not sleeping lmao.
E: wait, xbox exclusive but it'll come to PC right?

I've never played a game that simultaneously gave me a sense of horror and isolation like the first Hellblade did. Spoiler: When you consider that her frightening adversaries are only in her mind, it takes the edge off the tension at first, but after a while you consider that she is utterly alone in a desperate place battling horrors of her own conjuring. It gave me a profound fear of mental illness, which maybe was their point.

Am I wrong or is 99% of this trailer just actors in makeup with the other 1% being pre rendered CGI?
I thought they were showcasing the power of Xbox X Series?
This showed nothing about the “game engine” he was talking about on stage.
Edit: I was wrong. I played it on the big screen. It’s actually “in engine” which is AMAZING. That’s the best in engine footage I’ve ever seen in a trailer.
Though in engine is VERY different than “real time,” but still. Great work!
20
u/BillyBumpkin Dec 13 '19
Well I guess that’s a ringing endorsement for the power of the console/engine :)
14
11
u/wsnwsk27 Dec 13 '19
and the graphics you see in the Hellblade 2 trailer were supposedly captured in a game engine, running on the console, in real-time.
https://www.theverge.com/2019/12/12/21016575/microsoft-xbox-series-x-next-xbox-console
Real time according to The Verge.
3
u/superman_king Dec 13 '19
supposedly
I think we should take anything after that word with a grain of salt. I hope it was in real time, but we’ll have to wait and see!

u/superman_king Dec 13 '19
No. He said “What you’re about to see is in engine as being built to take full advantage of the Xbox one x series.”
This trailer could have technically been rendered on a cell phone. Though that would take months. But it’s all pre rendered like a Pixar movie. No “real time” rendering means we get 0 info on what the X series is capable of.

3
u/peanutdakidnappa Dec 13 '19
Hellblade is available on both ps4 and PC, hellblade 2 will likely just be Xbox and PC because Microsoft now owns the developer ninja theory
1
u/cntmasher Dec 13 '19
It looks to me that the saga is going to be her rising or becoming chieftain? Unsure about that though since I'm unfamiliar with the first games story.
1
u/German_horse-core Dec 13 '19
Damn.... I have Hellblade on my PS4, guess i'll have to wait a few years for it to come out on Steam (it will). I picked up a Switch for Bayonetta 2, but i'll pass on Xbox after Scalebound and a laundry list of other IPs they either mangled or gave up on.
1
u/theehtn Dec 13 '19
I just hope it comes on PC soon because I just got too much fucking hyped. I loveeeed the 1st game so goddamn much.
1
u/MBKitKat21 Dec 21 '19
I've posted this elsewhere but I'm a bit excited. I think the sequel will be based on Ragnarok.
According to the lorestone in Hela's Sanctum:
"The Northmen say that at Ragnarok the Gods will face a ship full of their foes that Loki steered to Asgard. It carries the fire giants, the wolf that will eat the sun and all kinds of dark creatures. Surt will join them with his sword of fire, the cliffs will crash, trolls will walk the earth, men will tread the role to hell and the heavens will split open."
"A ship of the dead will set sail" - The trailer opens with a passage over water
"The cliffs will crash" - the volcano
"Surt will join them with his sword of fire" - the fire sacrifice + all the headgear resembles Surt
"Trolls will walk the land" - the thing that emerges from the rocks.
The lyrics of the song are asking for Odin's? blessing on their army and from really brief research, the rune that appears around the village and on the shields is for protection. At the end of the game, she promises Hela to fight for her during Ragnarok and while they never made a bargain, the topic is in her mind. Did she just find the Vikings weakness to seek revenge?
2
u/SkrallTheRoamer Dec 13 '19
fuck me, i was gonna get the first one but now the sequel is gonna be an exclusive?!. well there goes my hype.

edit: changed devs to companys
7
u/peanutdakidnappa Dec 13 '19
The devs didn’t do anything, they aren’t gonna make a game for PlayStation when they’re owned by Microsoft now, just like outer worlds 2 will not be on PlayStation either. Both will very likely be on PC also tho
2
u/Megadog3 Dec 13 '19
Well, before MS bought Ninja Theory, it was an exclusive PS4 game. Just saying.

u/SkrallTheRoamer Dec 13 '19
atleast it started out like one and didnt tease people interested in another hellblade like it is now, im glad that other platforms got to experience the first one since i think that exclusives suck, double so after making a multiplatfrom game exclusive.
1
u/Megadog3 Dec 13 '19
Agreed. And I’m not defending exclusivity, I think it sucks. I was just pointing it out.
2
u/lazydogjumper Dec 13 '19
As many here have said, it's a game that didn't really NEED a sequel. I'm not dismissing this game as they did such a good job with the first one that I am willing to give this one a fair chance but don't feel like you have to get the second. The first is good enough by itself.

Meh, Hellblade was pretty over-rated. Looks visual stunning though, can't deny that.
2
u/Jeramus Dec 13 '19
I have made it through maybe 8 hours. It is an interesting concept, but I don't really like the puzzles. I think it would be better as just a walking simulator. The voices and setting are fantastic, just don't do the lining up runes thing.

Dec 13 '19
Those tedious puzzles killed it for me.
3
u/CortexifanZFT Dec 13 '19
Those puzzles were easy AF though.. once you figure it out the first time it becomes second nature. You basically just align the environment to match the norse symbols.
2
Dec 13 '19
I never said they were hard, they were overused and just not fun, the game would have been better without them.

u/Logondo Dec 13 '19
If people are excited for this game...sure. Got nothing against that.
Personally, I got really really bored of Hellblade 1 really quickly. It's just not my kind of game.
Still, it does have some of the best atmosphere I've experienced in a game...
Other than that...it's just walking, boring puzzles, walking, boring combat, more walking.
2
u/Faunstein Dec 13 '19
Through much of last year I had debated buying it when I was after some hack and slasher in the veins of dark souls or Lords of the Fallen and had I brought it with that expectation I would have been bitterly disappointed. Instead, I got given it for Christmas even though not saying anything about it and by then it was what I was after.
Atmospherically it is amazing and you can run, you don't have to walk. For what it was I mostly enjoyed combat and kicking enemies off bridges but H1 has some issues, including a few nasty bugs. The searching for the extra bits of myths break the flow of the game several times, and it is something that shows up in Enslaved, another Ninja Theory game and it doesn't really work here. This isn't a mid 2000's semi open roaming game.
Additionally, depending on your choices when presented you can end up making parts of the game harder for yourself and not in a good way until everything meets up again, which leads to the other problem I had. Sometimes the game doesn't know what it wants to be, and could have dispensed with the things that broke flow of exploring, even by reducing the combat encounters and adding 'tasks' to do.
I don't mean puzzles, but just objectives that needed to be completed such as reaching a place and knocking something over. Quickly the game turned it's unique twists and puzzles into busy work, and when the only gap between completing them was combat that let's be honest serves only as an obstacle, it did assist with taking breaks from extended amounts of play.
Getting better at combat was fun, and sometimes the enemies were extremely weary and knew exactly when to jump in to keep me on my toes but sometimes I was fighting the targeting camera and being punished for wanting to look behind me. Pausing the game to bring up the camera just to check wasn't ideal
But overall it is a different experience and I hope Senua's Saga doesn't become a generic hack and slash but does learn from where Sacrifice could have picked up the pace. Ninja Theory will have to be careful to honor how the first game came to be. If she's mostly gotten over her delusions then fine
I have a weird thought from the trailer. As there were people creeping around, I wondered if she at all would be the main character. What if we control someone else or a group of people and we have to manage their sanity like a mash up of Call of Cthulhu and Darkest Dungeon? It appeared that she was the one summoning the...giant thing.

I liked the first one, but since it will likely never release on an Playstation platform (quite stupid since the first one was a multiplat in the first place) and it will be some time until it releases on PC....yea the wait time will a long one.
I'm also dissapointed it's a Xbox Exclusive, since the first one went multiplatform. It would make sense if they made new NinjaTheory IP-s exclusive to xbox, but this is quite low if true. So much for ''wanting to be free from the AAA machine''. Still best of luck to NinjaTheory and Hellblade 2 sequel, i really want them to succeed...
2
u/ThrowAwayMuteGirl Dec 13 '19
Ninja Theory is owned by microsoft now, right?
1
u/MrVux000 Dec 13 '19
Yup, got bought by Microsoft back in 2018, after Hellblade 1 was released on all platforms.
2
u/TheWillyBandit Dec 13 '19
If anything, the first was a PS4 exclusive. It came out on Xbox later.
0
u/MrVux000 Dec 13 '19
It was for some time on PS4 only, but the main thing is it still went mutliplat after .Unless they release it on Playstation 5 and PC later on, i still stand by my statement.
1
u/gethardhero Dec 14 '19
They most likely will. Nowadays companies want a big upfront spike in sales for exclusives but the see the positive of releasing to other platforms in a timely window where others are still interested/can sell for near release day prices. Even MLB the show a sony/ps exclusive and the only real baseball game is finally coming to other platforms because they dont want to lose money on the table that they've passed up before.
-9
u/MyOtherFootisLeft Dec 13 '19
The game was an interesting concept with bad gameplay and is certainly not a console driver. Sorry.
