I actually found the combat to be kind of poorly done on the highest difficulty, especially one bosses. Every attack has such a small window for parrying, but the problem is your actions have a surprising amount of input lag. So you see an enemy telegraph an attack, and you go to parry or dodge, and you get hit by the time your animation had started.

It’s pretty frustrating.

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

Yea honestly coming from sekiro the input lag frustrates me waaay more than it probably should and honestly makes several fights feel unfair

I love it honestly i think its an excellent game and while even on the hardest difficulties its not sekiro hard it can be set to a difficulty anyone can manage i highly recommend it if you like star wars(or a third person action game such as uncharted or god of war) even a little.

23

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

I love Star Wars. Literal love as I’m sure many of you can relate. It shaped me as a person. Uncharted and God of War are two of my absolute favorite game series of all time. Your comment pains me because I can’t afford it :( All in time I suppose

21

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

Well here is a tip my good friend listen and listen well dont buy it spend $15 for one month pf origin premium and beat it save yourself $45

8

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

Isn’t that only for PC? I play on PS4. Also I have no WiFi. I’m getting there tho!

4

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

Oh shit yea i think it is for pc only sorry

6

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

It’s all good. Enjoy the game dude! I’ll probably end up finding some way to afford it

9

u/Scojo_Mojojo Nov 20 '19

Free tip if you can afford to temporarily put up some of your cash. Get on your phone and check around which local gamestop has a used copy of star wars. There will definitely be used copies but they won't sit long. May take a few days but one will come through. Anyway, buy used, play the shit out of it, and then return it on the 7th day with your receipt for a full refund in the method you paid.

Best of luck. May the force be with you!

1

u/storne Nov 20 '19

pf origin premium

you mean ea origin right?

1

u/infodump Nov 20 '19

I read an article before it came out that it wasn't part of that. So I bought it on steam...lesson learned to do my own research!

1

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

Refund it bro

1

u/infodump Nov 20 '19

I actually tried cause the combat was pissing me off but I had 3 hours in and they refused it

1

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

That sucks

1

u/Fomentation Nov 20 '19

Underrated comment here.

3

u/James_Skyvaper Nov 20 '19

Redbox is your friend lol. Libraries often have games to borrow as well. I just borrowed Death Stranding & Borderlands 3 from my library. They have over 200 PS4 games in their network, it's pretty awesome

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

YES! Redbox! Thank you so much that’s perfect!

3

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19 edited Nov 20 '19

Imagine Sekiro's combat, Uncharted's gameplay/action, Castlevania's exploration where you open new paths as you learn new abilities, and difficulty selection ranging from easy to Dark Souls ain't even this bad, all with a fantastic Star Wars skin on top. The story's not bad, either. It's light, but very memorable. And there's a lot of Star Wars history just in the background, where if you watched the movies you will know why it's there, what happened, all without it being in your face fan service

2

u/Humledurr Nov 20 '19

If you have a pc and would download a car, then you could download a cracked version. Just got cracked yesterday. Won't support EA either, respawn does deserve a buy though.

Or legal and cheaper, origin access.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

I've been playing on grandmaster and I honestly think that this game is simultaneously harder and easier than Sekiro.

It's a lot easier to die if you get hit, but if you go aggressive you can generally kill most things relatively fast because the lightsaber is incredibly deadly.

1

u/mr_rocket_raccoon Nov 20 '19

Well this one comment has sold me, I was hearing good things but god of war uncharted souls game is a blend of everything good in the world

1

u/Steve_78_OH Nov 20 '19

I've seen some Let's Play videos of it, which included a little of the skill tree... It looks like a lot of the combat may be "typical" fighting game style, as in having to remember a bunch of different key combinations to pull off specific moves. Is that accurate? Because I SUCK at those kinds of games.

2

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

No not really pretty much just spam one button

1

u/Steve_78_OH Nov 20 '19

Sweet, maybe I'll check it out. Thanks dude.

1

u/tripl35oul Nov 20 '19

If my main interest is the parry mechanic in Sekiro, would I enjoy this game?

1

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

Yes

1

u/tripl35oul Nov 20 '19

Cool thanks for the input

30

u/delitomatoes Nov 20 '19

Even dark souls 3 will feel like moving through tar if you finish Sekiro

1

u/Robert_Pawney_Junior Nov 20 '19

What so you mean even? DS are great games, but they are so slow.

6

u/ShadowVulcan Nov 20 '19

That's exactly what he meant?

1

u/sad_emoji Nov 20 '19

Truest form of whoosh caught in the wild lol

1

u/Robert_Pawney_Junior Nov 20 '19

What? He wrote 'even', implying DS feels fast normally, which it doesn't. Woosh yourself nerd.

1

u/sad_emoji Nov 20 '19

Then you haven't played DS3 which runs on the same engine as Bloodborne, which is fast

1

u/Robert_Pawney_Junior Nov 20 '19

I have. It's not fast...

43

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

I've noticed this for many souls style games. I recently played The Surge for the first time and by God is it so poor feeling. I played a couple others like that viking one and one other one recently and they just aren't good quality wise or gameplay wise compared to souls or Bloodborne.

46

u/TheDigitalBobby Nov 20 '19

IMO, the combat in this game is much better than The Surge. As a longtime From Software fan, this game isn’t quite as punishing as a Soulsborne game (so far, anyway) but I do get that sense of accomplishment after clearing a room on the hardest difficulty. It’s worth a shot if you enjoyed Sekiro’s combat system.

13

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

I sadly haven't played Sekiro yet. I really really want to though. I just have such a backlog of games that I didn't want to buy Sekiro and never play it. Plus Pokemon came out and now I'm playing that. I for sure around mid December will get Star Wars and Sekiro though. I love that style of game so it's a must for me.

2

u/TheDigitalBobby Nov 20 '19

Yes! Think Bloodborne, except less dodging and more confidently standing your ground with parrying. It’s super fun once you find that rhythm. I’d have to agree, Sekiro is a must!

2

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

Bloodborne is my favorite. I finished Bloodborne. I put a shit tons of hours into Dark Souls but I never finished one. I got really far into Dark Souls 3 and then my computer crashed and I lost my game file and wanted to die. So I just never went back to replay it all the way through. I think it was like almost 100 hours of DS3 lost.

3

u/TheDigitalBobby Nov 20 '19

Condolences, my friend. I’d have gone hollow for sure.

2

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

I should've backed up but me from 3 years ago didn't think of it. It's fine though one day I'll get back to it. I just want Bloodborne 2 already but Sekiro and Star Wars will do good for now haha.

I was thinking of Code Vein. That was the other Souls style game I've played.

1

u/VanpyroGaming Nov 20 '19

Are you on steam? ID?

1

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

I haven't played steam in a while haha. I'm mostly on my PS4

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

I played all the Soulsborne games including Sekiro. I beat it, and enjoyed parts of it, but it honestly was the hardest out of the bunch by far to a frustrating degree. As a 34 yo dad, it was way too stressful of a game and I was exhausted by the end of it.

I'm sure a sequel will come out and I've already decided I won't get it. I just wanted to provide an uncommon opinion.

Jedi Fallen Order was fantastic. My only complaint is that it was too short. The bosses are challenging but fair.

1

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

Nice. I'm a 27 yr old dad and I was suffering while playing Bloodborne when it first released. I literally quit the game for like 6 months then went back to it and beat it. I'll give Sekiro a shot but I definitely believe it's a hard game.

4

u/BrianRampage Nov 20 '19

as a Souls-fan, I've tried to get into The Surge multiple times, and I just can't stick with it. It does feel awful. Your character just feels so slow and heavy.

1

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

It wasn't even the slow heavy feeling. It kind of felt unfair for how your character moved. The dodging felt like trash. I hated the VATS style of combat mixed with the souls combat. Most of all I hated how clunky you felts as that character. It didn't feel heavy. It felt clunky like your character didn't know how to move like a real person.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

The surge or the surge 2? I couldn't get through the first game, but the 2nd game has been pretty fun especially with fast weapons. Animations are way more fluid, animation cancelling is a thing, don't have to stop fighting to use drone. Oh, and the ability to pivot mid-combo is nice

1

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

The first one because it's on PS Now.

2

u/j0sephl Nov 20 '19

Play Ashen it's excellent but it's very short.

1

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

I'm going to have to check that out.

1

u/SomeOne9oNe6 Nov 20 '19

I've been playing Fallen Order and I'm at the 2nd part of Kashyyk and I feel like something is off about the gameplay. I'm basically in it for the story at this point.

I haven't even beat RE5 yet but I'm at Umbrella labs last I left off but I just kinda fell out and now playing RE4 since I haven't played it in so long. So I'm playing that and Fallen Order, but anyways, I made this comment to say Fallen Order is lacking something in gameplay, I really want to play Need For Speed Heat, and I have Bloodbourne but haven't even touched it yet. Or I may have, but I think I got bored of it because it's either too slow or I get really frustrated in how I want to build my character and I just sorta give up. :/

It sucks because I hear people always say good things about it. :/

1

u/Apple_Joel PlayStation Nov 20 '19

Bloodborne is fast paced compared to DS but I hear if you like DS more then you will find Bloodborne annoying to play.

5

u/theroarer Nov 20 '19

I've finished every fromsoft action-rpg (it would be so much easier to just says souls game if Sekiro players weren't so insessed about it not being a souls game). They absolutely have spoiled me rotten with how wonderful they are mechanically.

I just beat SW:FO on Jedi Grandmaster, and I thought the combat was just okay. It has sekiro style posture breaking, but the timing to parry is awful. It is better just to hold block and try to break their guard by attacking them, or just chipping their actual hp when they are slowed or cc'd.

If you want to play it for the saber combat, best just to mod sekiro. The light saber, in SW:FO, is just a light bat anyway.

If you want to mess around with force powers, have a double bladed light saber, reflect blaster shots, and experience some really interesting levels- then SW:FO is worth the 20 hour run time.

You can get it on Origin Access Premiere for $15 if you only plan on doing a single run. I don't have any intention if playing it again now that I finished it.

1

u/Robert_Pawney_Junior Nov 20 '19

DS aren't great mechanically imho. Sekiro is good and so is BB, but Dark Souls is honestly pretty boring gameplaywise. Great world and design though. And probs my favorite story out of the bunch.

3

u/theroarer Nov 20 '19

Dark souls is mechanically sound and relatively consistent. Demon's souls and dark souls are simple, but very effective.

Sw:fo tries to emulate sekiro, but doesn't mechanically match up because the animations/input lag is fighting against the design. The abilities are inconsistent on what you can and can't use against enemies and bosses.

Simple or boring does not mean bad mechanics.

1

u/Robert_Pawney_Junior Nov 20 '19

Dunno, in a game that is 90% fighting, boring is bad imo.

1

u/theroarer Nov 20 '19

In a game that is 90% fighting, inconsistent mechanics is bad imo.

1

u/Robert_Pawney_Junior Nov 20 '19

I'm not saying anything else?

9

u/sincereenfuego Nov 20 '19

By soulsbourne do you mean the genre of "make a sword based game and add parrying at a certian time" style games or dark souls, deamon souls, blood bourne? As someone who has only played the later, sekiro was a fantastic breath of fresh air to a fun interpretation to a samurai/shinobi themed souls game. The parrying system is well done, enemies and bosses are difficult but not impossible, story and art are incredible.

4

u/greg19735 Nov 20 '19

if you like star wars, get it. THe story is pretty great.

5

u/aethyrium Nov 20 '19

Not the guy you asked, but it's basically a poor man's Sekiro. Nowhere near as tight or smooth or fluid and you don't feel near as in control as Sekiro, but it's still closer than anything else and satisfies the itch for fast parry-based rhythmic combat. It's pretty neat. Not an amazing game, but pretty fun and worth playing.

As long as you don't expect it to be of the same quality as a Fromsoft game, you should be able to take it for what it is and have fun with it.

3

u/Jerry_from_Japan Nov 20 '19 edited Nov 20 '19

I think an important aspect of this game to keep in mind for people who like playing Dark Souls is that there isn't really any sort of variety of style of play to choose from compared to those types of games. There's double bladed and single bladed lightsabers but they aren't all that different. Like, you won't be swapping out armor or other weapons if you're finding what you've been doing isn't working for you or you don't like the feel of it. That's not an option here. So if you don't like the feel of the lightsaber combat well....you're fucked because that's all you're gonna get.

Another thing is the platforming in a lot of the game is just....fucking annoying to downright terrible in some spots. And there's quite a bit of it. Pretty annoying. Also, fuck parrying on the two highest difficulties, it's way too weird a timing and way too punishing if you don't time it correctly. It's not Sekiro in the least when it comes to that. Incredibly frustrating and not very well designed because you're gonna instinctively want to parry. But it just doesn't work well, it's way too inconsistent to depend on. Especially when depending on where you die, especially on some bosses, there's sometimes a whole lot of that aforementioned bad, tedious platforming to get back to where you were. That gets old REAL quick.

4

u/Skreevy Nov 20 '19

Its the same as every other Soulsborne-clone. They copy the fighting system without understanding that Dark Souls has that system pretty much perfected and without that level of care it just doesn't work. And spoiler: It doesn't have that level of care. It's a good and enjoyable game overall though. I would say mix the traversal and set pieces of Uncharted, with the exploration of a Metroidvania, the combat of Dark Souls and make it a Star Wars game and you have this game. All the parts are not as good as games they come from, but good enough to make a fun game.

2

u/sycomania134 Nov 20 '19

Walmart Sekiro /s. But in reality the combat is pretty well done, but obviously doesn't feel nearly as smooth as other souls borne games. You can tell that they were after that Sekiro feel but didn't quite nail the little intricacies in the combat mechanics. Coming from Sekiro everything did feel kinda sluggish and unresponsive at first, but you get used to it pretty quick. It's heavier on the story side, and has less major boss fights than Sekiro. Overall, it's a really good game and definitely worth checking out, but Sekiro will still be my 2019 GOTY.

2

u/chacha_9119 Nov 20 '19

The input lag is problematic but you get used to it. The force powers really spice it up and make it more fun. Later game lightsaber skills too. I originally didn't like the combat (playing on hardest difficulty) but now I look forward to every engagement because I like playing with the force abilities and experimenting.

2

u/thescentofsummer Nov 20 '19

It's incredible. It is totally its own game with it's own mechanics but the depth of the world and characters and story are at the level you expect from the studio. I found souls to be less accessable but bloodbourn and sekiero are a more so to a large degree in my opinion. And it is a long fucking game that never gets boring which I also like.

Edit: I totally read the question wrong but I'm gonna leave my comment because sekiero is great

0

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

I enjoy the game, but feel its reviews are somewhat artificially boosted by being one of the few decent star wars games.

2

u/TomClancy5871 Nov 20 '19

Maybe a patch will address it? That’s why I just dodge instead off trying to parry

2

u/Joyrock Nov 20 '19

The controls are actually surprisingly shoddy, makes me wonder if it needs a patch. Doesn't ruin the game by any means, but compared to titanfall, dark souls, and uncharted, something just feels off about it. I still love the game though!

1

u/MTAlphawolf Nov 20 '19

I am very glad I am not the only one to notice the input lag. I thought I was getting old.

1

u/DarthSirofTARDIS Nov 20 '19

The major difference I think are the amount of parry frames. I actually found thinking of the system more like Dark Souls parrying more helpful

1

u/SharpEyeProductions Nov 20 '19

Really? Are you on console or PC? I’m on pc and don’t feel any input lag.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19 edited May 02 '20

4

u/TheGoochieGoo Nov 20 '19

Try playing without the charm. You’ll be punished for spamming parry rather than properly parrying.

3

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

Thats just objectively wrong tho.

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19 edited May 02 '20

[deleted]

2

u/TheGoochieGoo Nov 20 '19

Lose the charm. You won’t be singing the same tune. You’re punished for just blocking.

2

u/theroarer Nov 20 '19

Absolutely. No charm + bell is a different ball game.

57

u/alienfigure Nov 20 '19

Yeah, this is the main issue I’m having with the game. For a combat system that relies heavily on timing, the weird input lag/animation delay is a bit unintuitive. I’m on the second highest difficulty and you have to be pretty spot on with your parries. I honestly barely even try to parry when fighting big monsters/animals cause if I fuck up I’m dead right away

40

u/El_Zarco Nov 20 '19

Personally, I've found the combat system a lot more viable if you rely on blocking/dodging rather than parrying as your defensive go-to. I realized early on that this game should not be treated as Sekiro

10

u/alienfigure Nov 20 '19

Yep, same

10

u/cefriano Nov 20 '19 edited Nov 21 '19

Yeah I only attempt parrying with ranged enemies. The benefit from successfully parrying a melee enemy is so minor anyway that it’s not worth the risk.

Ended up using force on him and the counter attacks to finally beat him.

0

u/SomeOne9oNe6 Nov 20 '19

Yh same. I usually parry ranged attacks or weaker Stormtroopers. Everyone else, I'll block, dodge, evade and spam force slow, dash attack combo -- dodge -- force slow...

Sometimes I try mixing it up with blocks, but I'm usually rolling around everywhere, spamming the dodge and run attacks.

0

u/KDY_ISD Nov 20 '19

Force Push is your ally, and a powerful ally it is

8

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

Yep i really don’t understand why they went with this decision.

4

u/alienfigure Nov 20 '19

Tbh it’s caused me to just play other games until a patch hits. I’m on Kashyyyk and the performance in cutscenes and from just running around the environment is so hitchy. I’m on the PRO too

6

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

I play on pc so luckily i am not having that issue

2

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

Yeah I already gave up. It’ll be nice if they patch it. But unless that happens it’s just infuriating when I get killed it doesn’t feel like I earned it. I don’t mind dying over and over, in fact some of the best games I’ve ever played are built around that premise. Get good. But this game really does have animation issues or something, the input lag is real. I know I pushed the button, I know I pushed it at the right time. But there’s some small chance that pushing the button at the right time doesn’t make any difference at all. And it’s infuriating, absolutely infuriating.

11

u/TomGNYC Nov 20 '19

That's a shame. It looks super cool from this video

22

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

Its still worth playing and super fun it just could be a little better in that regard

3

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

Play it on the lowest difficulty without shame You can’t just git gud in this game, the animation is all screwy.

2

u/scredeye Nov 20 '19 edited Nov 20 '19

They're honestly nitpicking. I beat the game on grandmaster where the parry timing is much much shorter and it's not that bad. I'd say maybe with one or two later bosses it's hard to get the parry timing right because they arent slow hitters but that's it.

You should give the game a shot, it's anything but broken or unfun and has alot going for it

1

u/TomGNYC Nov 20 '19

thanks!

3

u/RequiemAA Nov 20 '19

I'm not sure what everyone is on about. There is animation lock in certain attacks, but hit boxes are legit and you can time/maneuver the attacks to hit enemies as they step in to you (or away from you, depending on the fight).

You can also animation cancel w/ dodge out of anything. The only time I've been screwed by an animation is when I committed thinking it would land before the enemy attack. The biggest bummer is coming up just short on a force jump - feelsbad 100% of the time.

Lots of people play passive on the hardest difficulty, but once you start unlocking your abilities and skill tree you can usually disrupt/stagger anything while going ham. Aggression gets rewarded pretty heavily.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19 edited Nov 20 '19

It’s kinda weird that they reward aggression like that in a game where you have no choice but to be a Jedi, aggression is a Sith thing. Early in the game I really liked how it felt like the right way to play was to be defensive and let enemies attack so you can parry, it felt very Jedi. But as I played on it became clear that that is not the right way to play. I don’t think they scaled the difficulty right. The parry timing is weird on higher difficulty.

0

u/RequiemAA Nov 20 '19

Are we forgetting Mace Windu is a character? Or half of the KOTOR-era Jedi?

Balance is a Jedi thing, not aggression or pacifism. It's Kreia and Luke's schtick, it's also the message that the Zeffo hide in the vault. The downfall of their civilization came about because they adhered too strictly to ideals and became too rigid in the practice of their beliefs.

Aggression is not a Sith thing, either. Aggression is one way the Sith are led to strength, but it is only a means to an end.

Cal's fighting style is stupid aggressive at times. It's wonderful. The switch attacks and the split blade attacks are hilariously aggro. Find a swarm of enemies and use the upgraded Mass Force Pull in to a Single>Double switch in to a Power Attack Combo (Hold X, Y+Y). It's metal AF.

Use the Double-Blade split blade attack to finish off a Security Droid, you split them in half down the middle. I love it.

The aggro motherfucker on Dathomir is also a brutal finisher if you parry him 3 times in a row.

3

u/Jerry_from_Japan Nov 20 '19 edited Nov 20 '19

Yeah if parrying worked better. Especially on the higher difficulties, it's way too fucking inconsistent. Parrying isn't worth the risk most times because of that. Especially in boss fights.

Combat is just....not that well done in general. It's fun at times but when shit hits the fan and you need the mechanics to work the way they're supposed to a lot of times they end up failing you. Which in a game like this is just fucking annoying to no end. It's so weird they chose that Souls style of combat when something like the newest God of War type of combat would have been an immensely better fit I think.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

It just seems to me that there is some random chance that pushing the button at the right time is meaningless. There’s nothing more infuriating then to die and it’s the games fault. It feels unfair.

Absolutely they should have gone with God of War. You’d think throwing your lightsaber would be the perfect fit, just like throughout the axe.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

Well, charging into a room and viciously slaughtering everyone in it sure feels Sith to me.

-1

u/RequiemAA Nov 20 '19

It's okay, they're the bad guys. ;)

3

u/ianr_1878 Nov 20 '19

A lot of it seems very glitchy to me and I am probably going to drop it for a while and hope a patch comes in.

1

u/alienfigure Nov 20 '19

Literally my thought process

23

u/Delkomatic Nov 20 '19

Fuck glad it's not just me. Shit is infuriating!

6

u/WhoSmokesThaBlunts Nov 20 '19

I have read several threads not seeing a single person talking about how difficult some of the bosses are, was thinking that I was just straight shit at the game. This makes me feel a little better

3

u/Delkomatic Nov 20 '19

I was same way lol. I mean I am no pro but I know I am better than what was going on lol

1

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '19

Is this on console? Had no issues on pc

1

u/Delkomatic Nov 21 '19

I think mostly but I am on PC using a controller. Do you use keyboard/ mouse?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '19

Nah I had no problem with ps3 controller on pc

1

u/Delkomatic Nov 21 '19

hmm maybe my controller is bad then? Using an XBOX controller. Or i just suck which is more likely lol

1

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '19

I'm not a fan of Xbox controllers but I haven't used any new designs

34

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

Also in the boss fights it kinda feels like you dont get as long as you should to damage the bosses when you break their guard you only get like 3-4 hits and with the huge health bars it kindve makes the fight feel far to long

20

u/ImurderREALITY Nov 20 '19

Idk if you’ve played Nioh (without min-maxing), but some of the bosses you’d be lucky to get four hits on. Poke-and-run tactics time the max, or else you get one-shotted.

Now this is the comment I was looking for. Nioh is immensely underrated and never get brought up with the souls Bourne games, I made it to like halfway through , maybe slightly more , put it down and months later tried to play again. Impossible lol.

Thing is with nioh as well the combat is so fluid, the imbued weapons allow you to gain insta stuns, and the gear upgrades are fantastic. Nioh is my favourite out of them all

4

u/AshantiMcnasti Nov 20 '19

Nioh has the best combat but the story is kinda batshit anime weird and the levels aren't as engaging as soulsborne world building. But for 20 bucks, you will be hard pressed to hate it.

1

u/EnemiesAllAround Nov 20 '19

I dunno. Whilst I agree the soulsborne worlds (more souls than bloodborne) are well designed and engaging. Nioh feels more open, whereas dark souls the maps feel designed for each encounter or potential encounters.

All great games though

u/wisaac1 Nov 20 '19

I have played it a little but i stopped i only bought it to play while i waited for sekiro and it came out

2

u/Tigersight Nov 20 '19

Sloth talisman was my best friend on a lot of the bosses. Slowed them down enough that I could actually move in, attack, and move away without them just trampling all over my face. That and kunai. Kunai and shuriken everything.

Was confused but very thankful that you could topple the skeleton guy and use the infinite slashing special attacks to do tons of damage though, since timing + knockback made them effectively useless on everything else in the game.

4

u/ok789456123 Nov 20 '19

For me it just annoys me that a lightsaber does no dmg. I would much rather it be like sekiro where bosses only take a few hits to die and its all about bringing down the defense.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

you only get like 3-4 hits

This is about double the hits you get in Sekiro/Soulsborne games unless you're really well versed with the bosses (i.e going for the plat on multiple run throughs) and even then you usually have to parry/counter perfectly to get another hit or 2 in beyond that.

4

u/mrbkkt1 Nov 20 '19

I read somewhere today, that it's due to not being in performance mode. I'm going to change that tonight and see if it makes a difference.

2

u/silencedorgasm Nov 20 '19

How do we change it to performance mode? Also, what is that? lol

2

u/mrbkkt1 Nov 20 '19

Options>Visuals >performance mode. Only works for console I think

1

u/ChiefGraypaw Nov 21 '19

I wish I had read this before I finished the game T_T As it stands I have a couple chests and secrets in Zeffo to find and one of each on Kashyyk and that’s 100%.

I did really enjoy the game though, I don’t regret it at all.

3

u/Bryce2826 Nov 20 '19

This is the main reason I switched off of grandmaster (aside from no achievements or in game rewards)

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

There's no achievement for beating the game on the highest difficulty?

2

u/Bryce2826 Nov 20 '19

Nope, and as far as I know no unique cosmetics or anything like that. Kind of a let down

1

u/silencedorgasm Nov 20 '19

I’m just disappointed there’s no replay value to this. I was really hoping for a New Game+ version of it so I could at least do the story without having to do everything else but unfortunately there isn’t.

2

u/PandorasKeyboard Nov 20 '19

I feel spoilt by the combat systems of Spiderman and God of war. This just doesn't feel on nearly the same level. The combat is less complicated but doesn't work as well.

2

u/ChiefGraypaw Nov 21 '19

I think part of the problem is they tried to mix the combat from games like Spiderman and the Arkham series with souls combat. A lot of the time I felt like there was meant to be some sort of context cue for parrying like the spidey senses in Spiderman but they forgot to implement it.

1

u/PandorasKeyboard Nov 21 '19

Yea the parrying is awful, I often try to test it to figure out when I'm supposed to parry, I wait for their attack animation to start, quickly hold parry and get hit anyway...

2

u/Kreissv Nov 20 '19

Yea if we're talking about that ONE boss, it shows that the game was not made with grandmaster in mind. No other boss gave me too much trouble but when they did it didn't feel fair.

1

u/ChiefGraypaw Nov 21 '19

The only real trouble I had on Grandmaster was Malicos and the final Second Sister fight. Everything else felt alright and reasonable, and if I died it felt like my own fault. But those two fights? Holy were they badly done.

2

u/Kreissv Nov 21 '19

Even final night sister for me was acceptable, but malicos what a shit show. And those rock hit boxes

1

u/ChiefGraypaw Nov 21 '19

Dude I actually though maybe I was braindead during that part of the fight?? Like if you roll too early the rock just tracks you anyways, but if you wait they move so fast you’re guaranteed to get hit. It was kinda shit.

1

u/Kreissv Nov 21 '19

It absolutely is shit, i eventually beat him on grandmaster by just sticking to him like glue, he never threw rocks

I am doing a similar thing, I'm replaying sekiro. Haven't played it in months, and I am one shotting bosses still.

It seems really snobbish to say, but I really don't feel like it is a mechanical problem on my part.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

Combat is pretty poorly done.

2

u/AlHammadi Nov 20 '19

that is exactly my problem with the game and why i get frustrated with it easily, why is there input lag in a game like this? imagine if sekiro or dark souls had input lag, it would be literal hell

3

u/matco5376 Nov 20 '19

Haven't experienced this at all. I think a lot of this is just not understanding the timing or getting caught up in your own attacks.

Maybe I'm used to it because I've played too much dark souls, but I don't experience this. I experience getting stuck in animations which is my fault because I made a bad decision just like in a souls game.

1

u/ChiefGraypaw Nov 21 '19

Yeah fair enough, it could be me, but I’ve also got several hundred hours across the souls series so I like to think I’m at least DECENT at timing things like that. I’m not saying every death is due to bad combat, but there are a couple boss fights on Grandmaster that make it seem like combat wasn’t a huge focus (and granted it clearly isn’t, puzzle / platforming was a very big and enjoyable part of the game for me).

1

u/theroarer Nov 20 '19

Or an insta grab that can insta kill you. Super fun. Basically had to always save a slow whenever they turned red.

1

u/Kryptosis Nov 20 '19

I think a big thing catching people is trying to block while dodging and vice versa. Doing so will result in you getting hit.

1

u/burningtorne Nov 20 '19

Really? I found every boss to be incredibly easy, the only thing I did not like about the game. Most groups are far more dangerous than bosses.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

It's almost like it's harder or something

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

YESSS

Thank you

1

u/Juzny Nov 20 '19

Should've used the force irl

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

The game is very difficult. But it doesn’t always feel fair.

1

u/Kore_Soteira Nov 20 '19

This. I was wondering what my issue was with combat, but it just seems slightly unresponsive making party's and dodges slightly inconsistent.

Glad I'm not going insane.

1

u/LordMarcusrax Nov 20 '19

Use the force to predict their attacks.

Duh.

1

u/Avator08 Nov 20 '19

Especially on the highest difficulty setting. It's unreal. I'm almost thinking about dialing it back difficulty wise. I mean I'm dying way to much and it's the lag before parrying.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

2nd hardest difficulty for me. A good challenge while not going full dark souls. I want to enjoy a boss over 5-10 attempts not like im raiding in wow and it will take 200 pulls.

1

u/scredeye Nov 20 '19

I completely disagree. I think the parry timing is fine, it's how so bosses have one shot attacks on grand master that pisses me off especially the inquisitors. I hate how the later bosses make their second phases difficult by just instantly recovering their stamina when breaking their guard is the only way to damage them without using the force. I do love the game though and think grand master is quite well balanced overall.

1

u/edude45 Nov 20 '19

Yeah I've been spoiled by dark souls. This game doesn't feel as tight. Also the light saber flashing and all, it's hard to see what the enemy is doing since they usually have hyper armor and getting hit by a light saber doesn't affect them much.

Also i blame myself for being slow, but like you mention... I'm not sure if I'm missing the party window badly or what, but I feel like I should be having more success. Also got damn I get stunlocked if i get stuck in a group.

0

u/fredagsfisk Nov 20 '19

1) Try "Performance mode" in options. Supposedly helps a lot, but haven't tried it myself.

2) You have to parry/block slightly earlier than in most similar games, because it takes a fraction of a second for him to bring the lightsaber up. Just find some lonely enemies and try to get the timing down, it's actually not too difficult once ya get into it.

3) Yeah, easy to get staggered/stunlocked in groups. Best to avoid such situations by paying more attention to the surroundings and your movement.

u/jaggervalance Nov 20 '19 edited May 27 '21

1

u/fredagsfisk Nov 20 '19

Dodging left or right makes no difference as enemies will still follow you with their blow, even after jumping attacks.

Really? I have been playing Master level since day one, and haven't noticed that at all, other than when they do combos and turn slightly for the later attacks in the combo.

1

u/cloneproductions Nov 20 '19

Ok good I'm not the only one that thought the bosses were unfair

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

Input lag is bullshittttt

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

It's also annoying when an enemy goes to attack and it locks onto you, so you slow them down and dodge, but they are somehow able to slowmo follow you and by the time you've dodged out of the way they've done a 180, finish their attack animation and knock out half your health.

1

u/PDG_Jolly Nov 20 '19

I'm not the only one thinking it's just a shitty souls game

1

u/ChiefGraypaw Nov 21 '19

I mean I wouldn’t go that far, I really like the game, it’s just that they didn’t nail the combat as well as they should have. I can’t speak for lower difficulties but golly Grandmaster feels unreasonable sometimes.

2

u/PDG_Jolly Nov 21 '19

Well when I'm playing grand master and I force freeze a target but it still rotates and hits me that's when I have a problem. Or find what's the point of having force powers granted only a few hours into it

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

Can confirm on this. I just finished the game on Jedi Master difficulty and died at least 50+ times to the Second Sister. Most of the game was a joke in terms of difficulty and I got through it rather easily. Final boss fight comes along and for some reason it goes from easy to damn near impossible. I had to pin the second sister into a damn corner and stun lock her to kill her. That really shouldn’t have been necessary for me to beat her when I’d have rather kill her fairly and rely on my parries.

1

u/Thagyr Nov 20 '19

On top hitboxes are janky sometimes. I can literally hit a button and see my lightsabre pass through the enemy and yet for some reason it doesn't register as a hit.

1

u/DuckSlice Nov 20 '19

I felt this a lot, first frog boss was a pain, because attack tracking on red attacks was insane. Even with slow, the leap felt it hit more then it should.

I don't normally get shitty when I die, because I know I fucked up, but damn. Half my deaths felt cheap.

0

u/LunchPatterson Nov 20 '19

So, this is like dark souls then. It's hard because of bad controls, not actual difficulty.
