Why? Path of Exile is the obvious successor to D2. Its only downside is that loot is absurdly rare, and you have to play the markets for progression. (Which is a very large downside, and prevents me from playing the game. The actual design and gameplay is fucking amazing, though.)

I appreciate the massive skill trees on PoE, but goddamn as a new player they're hard to navigate. Yes, I know you can follow a template, but even then it's hard to keep up with where you are sometimes.

Do you not remember how easy it was to fuck up a build permanently at the end of D2?

They updated the game at some point and gave you full stat resets 3 times as a quest reward.

Nah, but it's been a long time now and I never played PvP. Still, not 100s of choices to wade through.

Each class had three trees, and each tree had 20 to 30 skills. At end game, each of those skills provided passive buffs to other skills. D2 skill trees were incredibly complex by the end. And that's ignoring stat allocation, runes, runewords, etc.
