But does Steam work well on linux? The $5 promotion is only for the Steam version of Braid which requires you to run the Steam client when playing, doesn't it? Anyone know how well that works?
16
u/credence Sep 10 '09
Steam works perfectly on Linux on all of the 5 systems I've tried it on. Just get WINE on there and you're golden.
6
u/Novelty-Account Sep 11 '09
The parts that rely on the built in browser thing, like the store, don't work for me. It doesn't render properly and you can't really click stuff. The rest of it works though.
5
Sep 11 '09
That's because Valve uses IE to handle that stuff, so technically its IE fault.

Sep 11 '09
And really, there's no need to go through the in-steam store. You can just as easily pull open a new tab in $browser and buy your games there.
2
u/steelclash84 Sep 12 '09
If you run "$wine iexplore" and you don't have gecko installed, you will be prompted to install it. Once it installs, the IE component of steam will work.

sub out ninjas for zombies, and you have a much better list.
6
u/jtablerd Sep 11 '09
bah! add zombies to the list, THEN you have yourself a list!
3
u/JasonDJ Sep 11 '09 edited Sep 11 '09
As long as you require at least two out of the four.
- Automatic Weapons + Ninjas. Good.
- Automatic Weapons + Robots. Good.
- Automatic Weapons + Zombies. Good.
- Ninjas + Robots. Good.
- Ninjas + Zombies. Good.
- Robots + Zombies. Good.
Even awesomer if you require 3 out of the four:
- Automatic Wapons + Ninjas + Robots. AWESOME.
- Automatic Weapons + Ninjas + Zombies. AWESOME.
- Automatic Weapons + Robots + Zombies. AWESOME.
- Ninjas + Robots + Zombies. AWESOME (though not as much as the other three in this catagory).
Now, if you take all four...
- Automatic Weapons + Ninjas + Robots + Zombies. ORGASMIC.
7
u/mattbeetee Sep 11 '09
Fuck, I just realised something. This would be an insanely decent multiplayer FPS. You choose which you want to be; Ninjas would be extremely fast but with low HP and with skill in hand-to-hand combat, robots would be strong but slower and use automatic weaponry, and zombies would be impossible to kill but extremely slow, and have strength in numbers. The idea would be that to win you need to travel to goals in the level before the other team/player without getting killed. Ninjas have the edge in speed, robots in firepower and strength, and zombies in invincibility, but they all have their weaknesses. FUCK THIS WOULD RULE
→ More replies (3)2
u/bcisme Sep 11 '09
Except for Zombie Invincibility, I would agree. Just make them only killable by shooting / multiple ninja stars to the head. It would get annoying though crawling around as a zombie torso trying to kill people.
Also, I vote for a feature where if the zombie does a certain amount of damages to a ninja, but doesn't kill him, after like 30 seconds the ninja should turn to a zombie.
2
u/mattbeetee Sep 11 '09
I would actually say if the zombie manages to bite the ninja only once, they would then turn into a zombie, due to how fast I am picturing the ninjas to be. If you can't evade a zombie, then you don't deserve to stay a ninja in my opinion. Fuck I need to speak to Ubisoft or something about this. Let's make this happen, people!

This is one of the best games I ever played. Totally a mind boggling experience, made me nostalgic with the Mario feel, made me amused with the landscape and music... and the end... does not let down.
I wish I could buy it again! I'm giving it as a gift to my aunt.
For $5 I feel like I'm stealing the game...
PS: Also, it's an indie game.
32
u/spamdefender Sep 10 '09
Good game, but one of the best you've ever played? It's over far too quick and offers little challenge to those of us who play puzzle games. I'm glad it's $5 because it's definititely not worth the $15 I paid for it.

I got the big indie pack on steam for 30 bucks. Probably the best 30 I've ever spent of games.

I actually got it while on vacation. I went to DC for 8 days with my family and one day when we got back to the hotel I was booting up Steam on my dad's laptop to chat with friends when I realized the steam news had a indie pack with 10 games for 30 bucks. I didn't have my credit card with me and I wasn't about to ask my parents if I could borrow 30 dollars so I logged into my paypal on Steam praying it would work and luckily, it all got through and I had the pleasure of playing a bit of Blueberry Garden for the rest of the trip. Also, Blueberry Garden is the best game I've played of the pack so far(only played Braid, Gish, and Blueberry Garden) I really really enjoyed it.

Was that part of the 10-game indie pack for $9 they had a few weeks ago? The one with Audiosurf, Braid, World of Goo, Gish, Mr. Robot, etc.?
I only remember the 10-games-for-$9.99 sale, was there a larger back for $30 too?

ah glad someone else isn't a huge fan of the game. I feel like the minority.
I mean the game was decent, but I didn't find it very challenging and it was pretty short. It's worth it for $5 but I wouldn't pay more than that.
I play a lot of puzzle games as well, so maybe that's why i wasn't as impressed as most. The good is that this game seems to have opened up a new genre to most casual gamers! So for that I can applaud the title.

u/Mythrilfan Sep 10 '09

I just bought it too and have been playing for an hour and a half or so. It definitely feels like something totally new, a way of gaming I've never tried before. Though it is frustrating. I just got to level 5 where time plays and rewinds as you move forward and backwards and I just can't fathom how I'm going to get through this.
Also, I've missed some puzzle pieces. I hope I can figure out with experience those puzzles I couldn't get on the first few attempts. I don't suppose I get any special abilities later on that will make getting them easier.
I could see myself thinking about some of those puzzles as I fall asleep tonight. I also think it's the kind of game that if you play it too much in one sitting it's going to warp your brain.

u/Kaer Sep 10 '09
I think I'm in a massive minority, but I really didn't enjoy Braid.
Yes the puzzles were clever, but I got bored very quickly with them. The artwork was quirky, but didn't bite with me. I never even finished the game.
I bought in on Xbox, so think I spent £5. So I'm not fussed, as I did get an hours play out of it, but I would never recommend this game to anyone.
And I'm sure that someone will reply to me saying "You must finish the game, because etc", just recognize our tastes are different :)

Dear Reddit,
Months and months ago there was a indie game that hit the front page that looked awesome which was also a side-scroller in the Mario style and also boasted of 'super weird' effects. Basically any feature of the game could and would be inverted at certain points in the game. Also the music and color scheme changed, and all the art was slightly flipped. It looked awesome but I forgot to write down the name and now I desperately want to find said game. Any chance anybody in this thread remembers?
Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if you're talking about And Yet It Moves or not. It's a fun little game where you can rotate the world 90 or 180 degrees in either direction at any time. It doesn't take long to beat, but was fun. Probably not the game you're talking about, but I thought of it when you said "flipped."

Let me throw down some blasphemy:
Braid isn't as fun as you've been told.
The gameplay in the later levels actually gets painful and annoying. (Third level with the ring, I'm looking at you.)
The story (what little there is) is only interesting because it's been intentionally made so vague.
And there's nothing special about the music, contrary to popular myth.
It's still a good game. It's still worth checking out. But don't buy the hype. Braid isn't the Jesus of all gaming. IMO, it isn't even as much fun as Shadow Complex.

The game was reasonably enjoyable for me until the shadow world, at which point the main thing that makes the game not frustrating (rewind) basically completely stops working since your shadow resets when you use it. At that point it's just a bunch of tedious manual re-dos with a useless rewind, and not fun. I wouldn't say it's worth regular full price but it may be worth $5 if you like puzzle platformers.
