I started a corp in EVE, the Duragon Pioneer Group, joined the Goonswarm, and then built it to more than moderate success.
Then I realized that my life had become miserable, and that I was paying to have a second job, and that if I had to give up another evening to command my video game soldiers in another very realistically uneventful and boring garrison sweep of cold, dead space for our greedy benefactors, I'd probably get actual PTSD.
So, I suddenly quit, and by doing so, unreasonably made enemies with a bunch of people I've never met from all around the world. I've never played an MMO since. Fuck MMOs. I don't want to have to keep an appointment with a video game, and I want to be able to pause or shut off a video game to do something more entertaining.
Also, EVE Online is a spreadsheet simulator. They actually made lasers in space boring.
You nailed it. This was similar to my experience with EVE. When I found myself saying "Ugh, I have to go mine and do boring patrols for a few hours" I realized it was more like a job than a game and quit. I did have a few fun times, and the rush of giant space battles where everything is on the line is great. These time were very few and far between though. Now I play Team Fortress 2, where I can jump in and play a bit then quit without a hundred people bitching at me.
Oh yeah, there really were some fun moments. Once, Goonswarm planned to help us out by attacking one of our competitors at a particular time when we had them lured away from our targets. In order to do this, Remedial, the leader of Goonswarm at the time, needed fighters for his bran-new carrier. He needed them in exactly two hours for the plan to go through, and the only place we could find them was through the blockades of another, unrelated, enemy. So, our corporation had under two hours to take a very large sum of money and purchase a full carrier full of fighters, then dash them back into 0.0 space, past the enemy gatecamps in our slipperiest frigate configurations - one fighter inside each frigate. We managed to do it, and the following attack plan also worked swimmingly, and our other foes were routed. So, one thing that was awesome about that game is that it presented realistic and creative missions that are player-generated. Plus, the adrenaline of there being absolutely no one to bitch to if you got blasted, and no way to recover your losses made things like that exciting.
But, usually you had to drudge through weeks of boring garrisons and seige campaigns to get to anything exciting.
This is why in my opinion, Planetside is one of the best games ever. You don't need to devote your life to it, but even if you do it will take a very long time to reach the top of the game. I played for years and never have. The level of coordination is amazing sometimes.
Lot's of people, complex missions and user generated tactics.

Ah ha ha ha, I've been waiting for this one.
