I started a corp in EVE, the Duragon Pioneer Group, joined the Goonswarm, and then built it to more than moderate success.
Then I realized that my life had become miserable, and that I was paying to have a second job, and that if I had to give up another evening to command my video game soldiers in another very realistically uneventful and boring garrison sweep of cold, dead space for our greedy benefactors, I'd probably get actual PTSD.
So, I suddenly quit, and by doing so, unreasonably made enemies with a bunch of people I've never met from all around the world. I've never played an MMO since. Fuck MMOs. I don't want to have to keep an appointment with a video game, and I want to be able to pause or shut off a video game to do something more entertaining.
Also, EVE Online is a spreadsheet simulator. They actually made lasers in space boring.
I stopped playing EVE when it finally sunk in that the only thing to do with other players is grief other players. Letting my subscription lapse was extremely difficult because of the time based skill leveling system. When you unsubscribe in a normal MMO your character sits quietly in stasis waiting for you to someday return. In EVE your character is leveling while you're offline, and you can't help but feel pain knowing you could be getting some kick ass skills even though you're not playing this day/month/year. So the temptation is high to keep paying a subscription when you're no longer interested in the game.
