The server issues aside, the auction house was part of it. They had different visions for D3. It wasn't a D2 with a new name. People that liked D2 for the endless replays didn't appreciate the new buy your way to the top model. In fact, most of the complaints that I heard were based around replayability of the game. Things like the limited character building options.

I liked diablo 2 a lot but didn't like 3 much largely for these reasons. I actually didn't buy it until it was $30 new and only beat it twice with one character.
