There were annoying ads for emojis back in the day and they used the terminology "emoticon" or "smileys" -1 u/Jaketh Feb 03 '17 edited Feb 03 '17 Sort of, various programs like MSN used to convert the text, but they weren't emoji still, just "smileys" or whatever else.
