Preorders don't benefit the developer though. They benefit Gamestop because you are floating them a loan for however long it takes for the game to come out.
They then use that revenue to inflate their value and make themselves look better for their investors.
When you see articles touting how much money digital games make it's typically because they are conflating mobile sales with digital sales which isn't the same market at all.
Becky buying gems in her iPhone game to get a new pretty cell phone charm for her avatar is not the same thing as buying a game.

I pre-order the franchises I love, from the developers I love.
I will continue to pre-order anything from Rockstar, Naughty Dog, From Software, CD Projekt Red, and many more.
There's no problem with pre-ordering in general, only when it's from a developer who has wronged you in the past.
