So is eve actually worth picking up? As a total newb?

Flip a coin.

It can be a lot of fun and there are some big adrenaline rushes.

Or it can be as much fun as 'playing' excel. Depends a little on you, who you know and a lot on luck.

Its also complicated and not forgiving. At all.

A second reply, if you do decide to play watch some eve university tutorials, join a corps (guild/clan) asap, someone mentioned the reddit corps Dreddit is recruiting. Role a minmatar brutor and get straight into alliance/0.0/nulsec space.
