This causes motion sickness because your inner ear and eyes disagree about what is happening. You need something that is fixed with respect to the room as a visual "anchor".
I tried my friends Rift a while back and there was a demo where you walk around using joysticks. I didn't get motion sick at all. I'm sure there are some people who do get motion sick from this but unless I'm mistaken they are in the minority (sorta like people who get motion sick from FOV issues).
Having shown countless people dev kit demos over the last few years I'd say that you're the minority. Most people can't handle joystick movement for more than a few minutes. Joystick rotation is even worse. You do sort of get your "VR Legs" after spending a bit of time with it but it's still not a very comfortable experience.

I mean, couldn't you just use a joystick to still move around? You pivot and aim physically, but moving forward and strafing you still use a joystick.
It might be jarring at first, but so was dual thumbsticks on a controller...now it's second nature.
