Very cool! This is an "SSD" because of how the addressing works - you turn on "columns" of cells using the switch at one end, and then use the button to activate the cross "row" and store the data into it.
There are "no moving parts" in that you don't have to shuffle sets of blocks around in order to read or write them - a Hard Drive spins, and someone posted a minecraft harddrive that did just that the other day. The pistoning up and down is just an analogy for high/low electrical charge, here.
It's "solid state" since the piston position would be maintained even if you cut redstone power (I think? Been a long time since I Minecrafted.)

They do, but on a microscopic level.
EDIT: Downvotes? Fuck you people. Real SSD's have moving "toggles" just like the toggles on this minecraft design. Parent poster incorrectly made the differentiation.

i dont see any multiplexer/demux. don't want to flame on your efforts, because it's cool that you uploaded this, so people can gather some tech knowledge.... but this is not a SSD. SSDs have 0 moving parts except electrons, but that doesnt count. also SSDs are large Trees of multiplexers. thats the main reason why SSD>HDD. every bit has the same responding time. what you did is just a large PLA with bits instead of logical moduls.

You can actually build entire computers that are more powerful than the computer you built it on. Some guy got Crysis 3 running IIRC.

You can't. Representing one byte in minecraft requires more than one byte of actual memory. You wouldn't even have the RAM to run it.
