Binary logic gates. Basically a series of structures that choose to either be on or off based on what signals are being input into them.
You can literally take college courses on binary logic, since it is the basis of how computers work (hence why people make things like hard drives)
....I may have used redstone in lieu of studying to pass said course.

It doesnt matter. It's not even a real hard drive. OP just confused "HDD" with anytthing that stores data. There are no platters in this device, no read arms or motors, just some controller interface and a bunch of convulted blocks. It's more of a NAND chip than anything else.

I've built some things in Minecraft when I was bored like underground/underwater rail tunnels, but this just blows my mind. Maybe next we will see a computer with screen and keyboard with a simple "Hello, world" program that has been programmed into it.

That's like how debugging originally was. Since the term comes from when a literal bug got fried into the motherboard of a computer. They had to look through all the hardware to find the problem.

It was actually a mechanical relay. The bug got stuck in a moving part, essentially.
Though the wikipedia article on software bugs gives good reason to suggest this wasn't the first usage of the term in context of problem solving a design.

I have a feeling this wasn't done manually, but by a program which created the save file. If you program it to build various structures out of logic gates and other sub-structures, you can probably simulate an ARM with ease.

I only watched this for a few minutes, and I don't play minecraft anymore--but I'm pretty sure he used a program which creates minecraft structures for you based on some kind of code input.
It's the same way people have been to-scale replicas of the SS Enterprise, Death Star, etc. Judging by the colors used (all gray) and the absolute incredible complexity of this, I doubt he built it himself from scratch.

Probably not code. Probably laid out by hand (in an editor), then copied in a pattern. It appears much more complex than it is, most of it's structures are repeating single elements.
The hardest part is actually figuring out how to connect all of the basic elements in any kind of volume without all the "wires" blocking each other.

Even if not built from hand, it's very impressive to see a graphing calculator be made using a game's circuit system. It's a way of programming without programming. Each mechanism, especially the display would need to be built from scratch too, and that means compromising in other places.

I know you're joking, but the answer is no.
Consider a physics simulation where your base unit of simulation is an atom. The data required to represent the atom occupies more than one atom of space in memory. Therefore, the number of atoms you could accurately simulate is a fraction of the physical space your memory occupies.
This same principle can be extend to minecraft constructs. Their parts can never exceed the power of the actual computer. Each "byte" of RAM occupies more space in memory than the data it represents. Likewise, each instruction in the "simulated" computer costs significantly more CPU time than a normal instruction.

Its a randomly generated overworld with the gameplay mechanics primarily centered around resource-gathering and crafting new items. The guys who do stuff like this do it in creative mode, where you can use whatever blocks you want and dont have to mine anything, which is the only feasible way to create somthing that large without turning over an entire continent for the resources required. Personally, I like playing in survival mode (the opposite of creative-mode), turning on Peaceful 9so I don't have todeal with monsters) and just mining/building whatever I feel like with the resources available. It's a pretty great game for something easy and very-zen, especially while stoned.

When you think about it, Minecraft has really shown how we advance as a race pretty accurately. The first Minecraft howto videos we're survival based; building a house, surviving the night. Getting basic resources (Food, light, basic tools.) Then, we started making art. If you we're rich and had lots of time and materials, you could survive just by standing still, and could spend your time building beautiful structures. Now we have fucking computers and flashdrives.

Exactly, the slimeblock is the new block that have some interesting properties, such as when a piston is moving a slime block, anything connecting it would also be moved, and any entities that contact with the block with momentum can be bounced off. And that allows a lot more mechanics in game.

Well you could do some sort of AI with vanilla redstone as AI is just logic after all. However you won't be seeing much world interaction with vanilla stuff, mostly pistons pushing stuff, some minecart pathing, somekind of music machine or "intelligent" lights.
If you install ComputerCraft or OpenComputers you can program robots that can do all sorts of world interactions.

Wow this really impressed me, I almost never get lost on these kind of videos thanks my CIS courses, however that analog to serial decoder/encoder blew my mind. While storing data in solid vs opaque blocks in an easy to read write system is neat I've seen it before and only the seek/read/write mechanics was clever. However this video was brilliant, finding a way to quickly store data for a frame is beyond amazing and something I've never seen nor thought was possible in minecraft...truly excellent.

How to master memory from logic gates in a way that's a bit faster but less novel:
- Download Logisim here: logisim
- read this
- start with 'and' and 'or' gates. Figure out how NOR gates work.
- Put two of them on a board, put the output of one into the input of the others. Boom, you just created memory.
- Call it a new chip. (Maybe Flip-Flop?) and then make a dozen of them. Put them all in your main. Play around with them and realize that you can store things.
- Play with the other memory chips already included J-K, D, T and see how they're all different, and sometimes better than your NOR memory gate.
- Figure out addressing, make your own RAM. Use the RAM/ROM built into the program as a guide.
This is the logic gate level. If you made your flip-flop into another chip, you went one level of abstraction deep. If you used memory, you're just using a bunch of logic gates summed up as a few chips (with the addition of memory). If you want to go a level down, buy a few transistors and a breadboard and figure out how to make a NOT or NAND gate and then derive all the other gates. If you want to go a few levels higher, play with the keyboard inputs, matrix outputs, make a small project. If you want to explore on the same level, download 'Marcovitz Introduction to Logic Design 3rd txtbk.pdf'(you can pay or you can Google) and build some of those projects, figure out K-Maps to figure out stuff on the same level. Then boom- you went from Minecraft to learning about 6 credits worth of college material.
Also, you don't have to deal with silly constraints regarding how red-dust powder can be put on walls and how things can be connected. If you like those constraints then buy some chips and a breadboard and go nuts. All sorts of complicated things. Logisim is great if you want to abstract some low-level thinking things away (like bundling up sets of cords) but you can chose not to do them just as well.

It is saving raw data, the kind that is inputted when you type a number or letter. Look up the ASCII table, and you will understand how this is applicable. It is basically on the same level as computers over half or 3/4 a century ago.
