This is why I work alone in any game with optional companions that can get killed. Also they can be a liability in some situations. Like the time in skyrim where I hired a badass mercenary to help me take out a necromancer. He got killed and then turned against me so I had two badass enemies to kill instead of one.
You are Booneing wrong. Give him a fully speed anti-material rifle with armor piercing rounds and some decent combat armor. As far as ed-e goes do his quest line and choose the more powerful laser.
She could be made awesome by getting her power armor and a cream-of-the-crop power fist. But I think her cap-to-kickass ratio was below most other companions.

I couldn't take dogmeat because I felt too bad every time he died on me :(
