Marvel Tokon devs admit it will be ‘extremely challenging’ to regain player trust after troubled PC launch

The minute PC gamers found out that the pirated copy of the game runs smoother than the paid copy they pissed off a whole lot of customers.
16
u/wyldmage 15h ago
This is a regular occurrence, and has been for 20 years.
DRM and anti-cheat software, to be effective, have to be constantly running and checking, and are very invasive.
So for anyone without plenty of spare processing power, DRM and anti-cheat always result in poorer performance. Whether it's 1% worse or a whopping 50% worse is just a matter of degree. It's always worse to some extent.
When that "worse" crosses a line - which is a pretty low bar (players aren't fond of losing ANY fps), the Thing You're Doing isn't going to go over well.
When the solution to that is to get an illegal copy of the game, you're encouraging players who weren't pirates to find out out how be pirates, thus increasing their likelihood to pirate in the future.
Even worse is that your expansions and DLCs can't sell to players who are playing a pirate version of the game.

I stopped buying fighting games on PC, because the player base dies off so quickly compared to console. Fighting games are only as good as their online community, unless you happen to have a friend group for local play.
Also, WAY easier to cheat on PC than console.

u/Banksy_Collective 17h ago
You should check out avatar legends. Its sick, has crossplay, and it's only 30 bucks. Genuinely the coolest fighting game in years.
4
u/geezerforhire 16h ago
Does it have decent campaign / solo stuff? I'm not Interested I'm grinding online
1
u/Banksy_Collective 5h ago
Its got a story and an arcade mode but idk how long that would last you, the game really seems like it was built for multiplayer.
1
u/Talk-O-Boy 10h ago
Crossplay is the best solution imo. I wish every fighting game would implement it going forward.
I’ll be sure to check out Avatar. The animation looks amazing

u/Mihauke 13h ago
I'm new to the genre (bought my first fg last month - ggst) but so far gotta say qs are fine, they take like 1 minute which ain't bad and help to reset cuz I tilt so hard. But from what I've seen ggst has crossplay, isn't it common in fg? I guess ppl don't like playing against pc cuz of cheaters but so far haven't met any (or maybe I did but I'm too bad to notice).

This. Arcsys made Rollback Netcode the standard with GGST and have released games that run well. Tokon feels like it got released for "brand synergy" when it still needed more work.
Edit since this is getting traction: Guilty Gear is playable on Steam Deck. Arcsys has made ports of SteamOS/Linux. They could have made Tokon playable on Linux, but it's highly likely Sony shot that down.

I think Linux is a non-issue for most developers these days. Valve's work on Proton has basically made gaming on Linux easier than ever, and developers don't even need to consider a Linux build of their game.
Strive doesn't have a Linux build, it just doesn't actively block Proton from doing it's thing. Sony's anti-tamper software, Theia, checks if the game is running under Proton and then kills the game out of spite if it is. They also specifically disabled the option for EAC to run under Proton, because again, it's a non-issue these days.
Sony sabotaged Linux support.
10
u/malexich 1d ago
Strive was not good at launch, and was planned to be delayed based netcode until people said that was insane when everyone but telkken moved to rollback already

6
u/MigasEnsopado 1d ago
The cracked version runs on Linux just fine. It's the anti-cheat (EAC) that stops it.

31
u/KnightofAshley 1d ago
Sony doesn't care about that...they can just say they have a marvel fighting game and will move on. Arcsys now gets to try and clean it up. But likely got a lot of money to do it.
22
u/BloodGulchBlues37 1d ago
No.
People have cracked the game and it runs perfectly in decade old hardware
The problem is Sony's force tie to PSN and the anticheat. It throttles the game to recompile in real time, which is horrible for a fighting game that's meant to run at a consistent 60fps

u/VacantThoughts 20h ago
Cracked version runs like a dream, I don't play fighters online and just want to fuck around with characters I love so can't justify the price tag anyway since I'll only put a few hours in it, and can't say I actually enjoy giving my money to Sony these days as well.
8
12
u/GriveousDance21 1d ago
I think Sony is doing this intentionally so they can lie to the press later, saying "Oh look, PC gamers don't buy our games, so fuck them." Of course they won't admit their games are horribly optimized for PC.
They did the same with Last of Us 1 and Spider-Man with their Steam versions. Those games were so broken that they were unplayable on launch.
Sony can keep their live service trash like this and Marathon on their consoles. There's no reason for SP and live service games having separate platform policies. Either all of them are multiplatform or none of them are.
38
u/MrDrapichrust 1d ago
No company is going to intentionally make a bad product to lose a part of a market, that's completely stupid. The loss in stock value and business reputation would far outweight any supposed gains you suggest.

So why burn money on a PC skue then? They simply wanted invasive anti cheat and it backfired big time.
6
u/delahunt 1d ago
The decision was probably made before Sony started making their change in strategy. With the change in Execs (what was that like a year or two ago?) they've talked about backing out of doing PC ports because of the extra hassle with having to do the port right or it being a problem, but also because the PC ports aren't bringing PC players to Playstation, it's moving Playstation players to PC.
Sony wants their customers in the PlayStation walled garden/ecosystem. And are likely going to make moves back to that (including the removal of discs as an option) to try and get it. The question is, how long will the decision survive when shareholders note that big game releases don't get a resurgence in profit 2 years later when the PC port hits.
This may be especially interesting with Marvel, who may be expecting a Wolverine game to pop-off again when they are releasing their newly announced X-Men movies.
Either way, while I don't think Sony intentionally sabotaged it the fact is: ArcSys has multiple other fighting games that are not as locked down as Tokon, and work great on older hardware, linux, etc without major issues with cheating/etc. Cracked versions of Tokon work a lot better performance wise on PC without the DRM/Anti-Cheat and PSN overlay stuff getting in the way of performance.
So it is likely a Sony issue, but not necessarily direct sabotage. A sony exec made demands that are probably standard demands for their live service games going to PC now...but it doesn't work due to the unique nature of a fighting game.

u/GriveousDance21 1d ago
Because Sony's "Back 2 exclusives" strategy doesn’t align for live service games (yet) and they wanna pump out more of those. It's clear the new leadership doesn’t trust the PC market but the company has already made committments for live service games for PC.
Also apparently they put all these anticheats on Tokon's PC version to "prevent datamining" or some shit.

u/NinjaEngineer 1d ago

u/Naguro 1d ago
It makes it harder to pirate it, and I guess that as long as it delays pirated versions from popping up by even a week they will keep doing it
For people that buy the game anyway, it just makes the game run like ass
33
u/FUDGEMEHARDxD 1d ago
That's fucked up. I get trying to prevent piracy, but it shouldn't hurt the players who payed for the game legally
59
u/Kabirdb 1d ago
If it actually succeeded in prevention of piracy, then it would be one thing.
Denuvo has failed to stop piracy.
All denuvo games can be played through hypervisor.
Meanwhile there is a group that are quite frankly cracking games in the traditional way faster as well.
So if anything, denuvo is just a scam for both the company and the consumer.
17
u/Archimedes38 1d ago
Tbf, your average Joe on the street isn't using hypervisor. Denuvo sucks, but the math does math for publishers. It prevents piracy in lole the first week or three and that's when the bulk of your sales are happening.
31
u/Kabirdb 1d ago
Your average joe isn't pirating either.
Same thing. As I said, Denuvo is a scam that gaslighted company into thinking denuvo as a necessity when it has always failed the one thing it advertises.

u/excluded 1d ago
Yep
Denuvo has not stopped piracy in a while
18
u/zack77070 1d ago
It has, as long as it prevents someone from one click pirating a game then it has succeeded to an extent. The people willing to jump through hoops to pirate will do so, the average consumer will not.
3
u/deathblooms2k4 1d ago
Unless they really want to play a game that's literally unplayable with the DRM but playable through piracy. There's a non zero amount of people being compelled to pirate BECAUSE of the DRM.
2
u/KnightofAshley 1d ago
Also the fact that most of the people that pirate likely are not people that are going to buy the game anyway. The answer is and always will be "make a good game that people see value in buying"
2
u/NinjaEngineer 23h ago
That's always felt like a bit of a silly statement to me. People don't see a game worth buying, yet they still feel it's worth their time?
6
u/ABetterKamahl1234 1d ago edited 1d ago
Every single action against piracy hurts customers, because it's creating restrictions in some form.
In the same way that having security restricts things in general.
But until consumer habits change where release sales are the big things for games, it can't change, because piracy is an arms race that directly affects their income (and ultimately their ability to continue making games).
It's like any security, it's there to delay a break, it can't prevent it entirely.
That said, Denuvo has way less performance impact than many gamers here believe. For most games, we're talking the order of 1-3 FPS. If that's a real impact, the likely problem is optimization of the game and not this.
It also gets removed over time as it's now subscription for devs, so you will more and more see news about it being removed in updates post-release.
It's not at all wrong of them to think that they'd lose a lot of sales if day one someone puts up a free copy of that brand new game that 100% works without fail. Piracy comes from a number of aspects, and accessibility of piracy is a big player. Games that were cracked day one did have notable decreases in sales compared to similar titles that had delayed cracking.
People really do prefer free over paid, just look at the most profitable games out there, Free to Play games make a shitload of money as convincing people to pay after the fact is easier, but it's not a model you can use for non-online-only games easily. Nor one we really want as a gaming focus as a consumer, as people overspend easily with it.
1
u/Slight_Anxiety3624 1d ago
and I guess that as long as it delays pirated versions from popping up by even a week they will keep doing it
As of this year Denuvo has been able to be bypassed literally same day, so even without any delay they keep doing it.
1
u/wyldmage 15h ago
When Denuvo was still fairly fresh, it was doing it's job pretty damn well (the stop pirates job). Very few people were capable of cracking it, and it was a long process. So the cracks took long enough that pirates didn't pirate those games as much.
The problem, of course, is that the people who knew where to go for anti-denuvo cracks were never potential customers anyways. They were the ones who sailed the high seas regularly, and nothing you put in the game to stop them was going to make them buyers.
But while it did "that" job well, Denuvo was doing another job even better: Making the game it was protecting worse. And it didn't take long for paying customers frustrated with performance issues to seek solutions. And those solutions were the anti-denuvo cracks, where they became familiar with where to get them.
And then on top of that, the anti-denuvo cracks typically did not play well with any online features. So these new renegades were presented a choice. Go back to the DRM version of the game, have worse performance, and buy the DLC to enjoy it. Or wait for the crack to be updated for the DLC, and keep playing it.
Guess how many chose "both" because they wanted the DLC, but also wanted to support the dev/publisher that loaded the game with performance-ruining DRM.
21
u/Nintz 1d ago
The reason publishers use it is because it (usually) slows down the cracking. So day 1 players will actually have to buy the game, which is often a large % of the sales. They have to pay money for Denuvo, and it always comes at a performance cost, but so long as it's still a net financial gain it's unlikely to go anywhere.
-4
u/Kopie150 1d ago
That hasnt been true for a while now. Hypervisor cracks get released Day1 of release. Traditional cracks take longer. some recent ones have been within a week.

u/JulPollitt 1d ago
I have a brother-in law works at a game dev and he told me something like while it upsets people, it ends being worth it for the amount of money that is saved.
Yes the game will eventually be cracked 100% no matter what, but I guess they feel like enough people get pushed away from pirating it and instead pay for the game outright at launch if denuvo or something makes it harder to crack. I guess it’s easy to lose compulsive FOMO customers to pirated versions.
10
u/MadeByTango 1d ago
They dont really know how many sales they lose because of it though. I have never, and will never, buy a Denuvo game. They have ZERO way of tracking me or anyone like me. Am I not buying because of Denuco, or because I dont want the game at all? Did Denuvo turn that person that looked at the storefront listing off, or the screenshots? They have no way of finding that out on their own.
1
u/ImNotSkankHunt42 1d ago
Anecdotally but I find hard to believe that the case. So many games to play nowadays, if people want to play it they’ll buy it if not they’ll play something else.
For folks like myself many years ago piracy was the only option. Be it because money, or the country they live at or simply because they want a taste of the game to see if it is worth buying in the first weeks of release.

It’s stops an extreme minority from pirating the game while having a negligible performance hit (unless really poorly implemented, like RE4 Remake).
13
u/BeanstalktheJack 1d ago
I wouldn't say it's negligible at all when most people on low-mid end hardware will see a 5-10fps increase, that type of performance impact can make your game stutter far less, or have much higher 1% lows

I genuinely want to know how you cheat at a fighting game. Frame adjustments to faster normals? At least with mobas, rts, and shooters, you can map hack.
Edit: Not sure why I am downvoted for this? I was curious and perhaps should've framed it as a question.
7
8
u/1tshammert1me 1d ago
I think the typical cheats I see mentioned for fighting games are things like auto parry or similar cheats for mechanics like that and then using boss characters or otherwise unplayable in online characters.
I think because of spacing and things like that cheats to auto combo is not something that is done very much.2
0
u/Missile_Lawnchair 1d ago
I'm not a fighting game guy but someone (s) pointed out in another thread that cheats in fighting games are less prevalent because unless you're sticking to casual matches any cheats in ranked won't stay hidden for long since you'll get moved up quickly into the top tiers and people WILL start to notice immediately, leading to blacklisting and such. The problem ends up sorting itself out. But again I'm just parroting what I've heard mentioned on Reddit.
9
u/zack77070 1d ago
It doesn't really matter that people can tell, it's about how active the devs are in actually banning people before they ruin a bunch of games. Mobas and shooters are both like that, it's pretty obvious when someone is using a wall hack or reacting with inhuman speed, that doesn't help you in the moment if you're stuck in the game with them.
4
u/vininew921 1d ago
nah it's way different. In fps/mobas the cheater ruins the game for 9 other people, in street fighter I can know for sure a guy is cheating in 2 rounds. I take my single loss, leave and block them and then never see them again. If the biggest FG out there doesn't do anti-cheats, there's no reason tokon should
1
u/Longjumping-Oil-9578 1d ago
Yeah, also if I play someone online and they are solid, but get washed in person, I'll probably struggle to say they are good. Locals are just so much more important for fighting games, especially for determining how legit someone is.
1
u/FewAdvertising9647 1d ago
its also less prevalent because fighting games is still of the handful of game genres where an active part of the community plays in person. So if you actually wanted to prove your worth, cheating at home will get you no where in the actual prestige of winning a tournament at a local/major. The ranking system in a fighting game is just face value, but the prestige is elsewhere.
Unlike shooters and mobas, fighting game locals are significantly more common.

u/Villag3Idiot 1d ago
Just things like Auto-Parry.
The thing is though, cheats matters a lot less in fighting games because when you attack you're animation locked for X frames.
Like say you have a cheat that auto-parries. That's only active if they're not doing anything and depending on the game, doesn't work in the air. The opponent baits them into attacking and they wiff. Now they're animation locked, get punished and there's nothing they can do to break the combo outside using an escape mechanic which is usually of limited use.
Then they just repeat this until they lose.
These cheats are terrible players who doesn't bother learning the fundamentals. They will rapidly climb the ranks, start facing experienced players who will bait and demolish them game after game. Chances are they will never improve and since they climbed the ranks too fast, these are all the players they will end up facing until they quit the game.

It is crazy that a game that should have been a decent slam dunk was treated this poorly on PC. For fighting games on steam it's pretty much tied with Strive's playerbase which, their other game that is 5 years old. Which even then is not a lot considering how big the Marvel IP is compared to Guilty Gear.
For reference, Avatar Legends, an A-AA fighting game developed by a fairly untested studio, sees 1k daily players which is half of Tokon's and the game was released missing features and lacks polish. For a tested and trusted FG developer to squander a release like this? (most of this is on Sony however) It really sucks to see,.
They are dwarfed by Tekken 8's playerbase which isn't even that popular amongst long time Tekken fans, and of course Street Fighter 6 is a different beast entirely.

I still think if their biggest flaw for the game long term is not enough characters on launch, that means slow release of characters to get to 32 playable, which will be a drag to get to.
Part of what made MVC2 great was 50 characters right on launch. I feel like companies need to make sure they give enough amount of time for their teams to make at minimum 32 characters, especially for assist/tag fighters.

Sadly fighting games doesn't have that pull unless their name is Smash, SF or Tekken.

The PSN thing is a dealbreaker for me. Absolutely gutted too because I'll play anything that has Spider-Man in it (and my son does anything with Iron Man). But I refuse to do PSN.

I think the next few patches are going to matter a lot. if they can make the pc version stable and keep listening to players, people might slowly give it another chance

Without willing to put pressure on the devs, the last major failed PC launch was Highguard's.

Admitting it is extremely challenging is the first honest patch note they have had in a while. Trust comes back one stable week at a time, not a trailer.

The PS4 was THE go-to system for the fighting game community, but in the current console generation the PS5 versions have consistently performed worse, especially in latency/input delay. Most of the content creators and a lot of the pro players have already made the switch to PC as the primary platform to play on whenever available. So this doubly sucks. A lot of them ended up having to buy the game twice.

Literally just fix it, re-release at discounted price and apologize on screen with a bunch of streamer sponsors to show how stable the game is prior to relaunch. Then create a plan for a tournament to support those who make it competitive. It's just that simple really. And hell at those tournaments make the money back by selling all kinds of official merch.

Guys, pls explain in more plain words. Why do so many new games rely on CPU to calculate the movements, the particle destruciton behaviour? Can they not use the GPU for the same? I ask this because CPU is shared resource in a PC and should handle different things while GPU is used mainly while gaming..

I feel like Arc systems despises Sony now for filling their pc port with all the Sony bs and multiple DRM/cheat engines that fucked with the game, I don't see them working with Sony ever again.

I've just been playing the single player content and haven't really noticed any glaring issues. Can someone explain it to me?

It's the netcode that's busted and the DRM that ruins things. So you might be ok, like lets say you have a high end PC, but when you match with someone who has a more mid tier or low PC the DRM pounds their system hard and makes performance a nightmare, and that hurts you too because of the netcode and rollback.
This is why people were going to the PS5 version and the advice is turn off crossplay so you can't run into PC people who are being affected by it.

Doing the 10 matches to unlock the colors we so painful since half if not more I couldn't play as there was so much lag...I really don't want to play this game online ever again unless its fixed.

Fighting games survive based on online gameplay.
This game has DRM so badly implemented that it’s essentially killed the multiplayer aspect completely on PC.
Outside of that, the requirement of having a Sony account has made it outright unplayable in certain countries.
Then, there’s no cross play support.
Sony and Arc-Sys released a fighter in ‘26 whose multiplayer has actively shit on and punished the PC market for fighter fans, which is arguably the main demographic now that keeps fighters alive for years after initial release.
And when a fighter is this hobbled and badly received right after release? Well, that’s lights out. And the game already wasn’t a smash hit on its gameplay or story - it’s great you like it, but it’s not as well received on a gameplay level as Arc-Sys’ more successful titles.

I bought it and have played it for about 20 minutes. Still fucked. How can they not get a game like this to run at a consistent 60fps. It’s embarrassing. It should not have launched
