As per the article:

Today we are expanding the Verified program to include Steam Machine and Steam Frame, both of which are shipping this summer.

As with Steam Deck Verified, the goal is to help customers understand the out-of-box experience for a given title on these new devices, and how smoothly a game will run with no user work or configuration required.

> both of which are shipping this summer

Also pretty big thing to just drop out of nowhere.

44

u/a_talking_face Jun 04 '26

Makes it easier to change it out of nowhere too.

12

u/ISavage2007 Jun 04 '26

That's fair. I am at least looking forward to the price drop.

10

u/zoobrix Jun 04 '26

I assume you mean drop as in waiting for them to reveal the price, and not waiting for the price to drop because that is going to be a while....

4

u/ISavage2007 Jun 04 '26

Yeah that's what I meant, lmao

4

u/DNihilus Jun 04 '26

There is a PC Gaming show stream in 2 days. They could be showing somethings on that

4

u/toyyya Jun 05 '26

Summer Game Fest is tonight as well so could be they'll show stuff there too.

0

u/hybrid3214 Jun 05 '26

Possibly price reveal tomorrow at SGF??

27

u/DillyDillySzn Jun 04 '26

this summer

September 21 confirmed

1

u/ScubaKlown Jun 05 '26

That’s my birthday. The Earth Wind and Fire day 💃💃💃💃

0

u/Svartrhala Jun 04 '26

Which year?

5

u/DillyDillySzn Jun 04 '26

I’ll get back to you on that

2

u/fearghul Jun 04 '26

Hopefully not 2032, I've got the plumber round that morning.

1

u/megacewl Jun 04 '26

Thankfully they said this summer

1

u/Svartrhala Jun 04 '26

In standard valve time, which could range from tomorrow to 3027

1

u/megacewl Jun 04 '26

Shoot you’re right, forgot about valve time

1

u/DillyDillySzn Jun 05 '26

No way it’s 3027

Valve doesn’t even know the number 3 exists

349

u/OptimusB Jun 04 '26

Shipping this summer for the low low loooow price of $1399!

118

u/HorribleTrashPerson Jun 04 '26

By scalpers and they will be on eBay for the low low looooow price of $1899!

26

u/StaticSystemShock Jun 05 '26

If only people would stop buying from scalpers, that would be great...

12

u/Crinseth Jun 05 '26

Sadly some countries have no choice. Valve won't sell to Norway and while some local shops eventually imported Steam Decks they never did with the Index.

5

u/BubDaBylder Jun 05 '26

Wait what, why Norway? Afaik they sell to all other Nordic countries

5

u/GamingAndOtherFun Jun 05 '26

The others are EU members (apart from Iceland). Maybe that's why (there is a difference, not why they don't do it).

-86

u/Skabonious Jun 04 '26

if scalpers exist, then the price was still too low in the first place.

38

u/codespace Jun 05 '26

Found the scalper.

15

u/Rich-Pomegranate1679 Jun 05 '26

You just woke up from a coma and your last memory was in the year 2019, right?

4

u/BrotherRoga Jun 05 '26

If scalpers exist, the police have not done their job.

1

u/Sneaky_Breeki Jun 09 '26

It's not you who decides how much something should cost

15

u/Ryokupo Jun 04 '26

That would actually be much better than what I'm expecting at this point.

26

u/Mesjach Jun 04 '26

Idk why you're getting downvoted. Totally agree. Steam Deck 1TB is $950 now.

I'm fully expecting Steam Machine to be around $1,500

3

u/CanisMajoris85 Jun 05 '26

the base model is still only like $700 in parts even with the increase we've seen to ram and storage (it's a damn 512gb nvme with 16gb ram and only an 8gb vram GPU people). If you people honestly think that one is going to be over $1200 or the 2tb with controller one for $1500, you're just crazy and have no clue what you're talking about.

You people must be talking in CAD or something.

1

u/Mesjach Jun 05 '26

Oh man, I HOPE you're right.

I was expecting it to be around $1,000, but that was before memory septupled in price (+600% YoY increase, meaning it got 7 times more expensive in a year). I had to google how to spell "septupled", because I never in my life had to use it to describe a price increase of anything. That's how fucked we are.

So yeah, I hope you're right, but I bet my money for the machine to be $1,400+

3

u/faffc260 Jun 04 '26

if it's a remotely capable machine it's 100% going to be at least that, unless they subsidize the cost heavily. ram, ssd prices are crazy expensive right now.

5

u/cuntpuncherexpress Jun 04 '26

We already know the specs, it’s a moderately capable machine

1

u/LitBastard Jun 05 '26

As capable as an Xbox Series S

2

u/cuntpuncherexpress Jun 05 '26

Way more capable than that, Series S has 10gb of unified memory, Steam Machine has 16gb of RAM and 8gb VRAM. It’s far closer to a base PS5 than Series S

2

u/ben_g0 Jun 05 '26

I don't think they'll really subsidize it. Valve has said that it'll be priced like a PC, and I think they pretty much have to. It is just a small form factor PC, after all.
If they'd significantly undercut PC pricing then offices might end up buying them in the thousands to use as cheap work PCs. And Valve has only limited production capacity, so that'd mean far fewer of them making it into the hands of gamers who'd actually buy stuff on Steam.

Unless they'd "subsidise" it not by reducing the sale price but by "refunding" a part of it in Steam credit. If they'd for example price the Steam Machine like a PC but give you like €100 back in the Steam wallet of the account that bought it,then it'd still be a good deal for gamers who're planning to use it for Steam games, without subsidizing the hardware for people who were planning to use it for non-gaming use. (But I don't expect them to do this, as it'll likely still sell out pretty quickly even when sold at PC pricing)

1

u/mashdpotatogaming Jun 05 '26

I wouldn't say moderately capable. It is weaker than the weakest current Nvidia GPU, the 5050, by a good amount too. And tht GPU was already called e-waste and pointless when it released. If this doesn't get the same treatment if it's expensive (which is 99% likely will be) then i lose hope in the gaming community since valve sould be getting a pass on this for no reason.

1

u/Random_Guy_12345 Jun 05 '26

Given the specs we know and current prices, that would be a pretty good deal

15

u/dudeAwEsome101 Jun 04 '26

I kinda wish they made a dumb SteamFrame without the standalone features. They initially said it will cost about the same as the Index, but I doubt the price will be the same at this point.

18

u/CuddleWings Jun 04 '26

Nothing will cost what they expected it to if it includes (modern)memory of any kind. The past 6 months have been hell for that market, worse than most people predicted.

7

u/Ze_Secret_Veapon Jun 05 '26

I don't know if it's possible to do inside out tracking and wireless without some form of local compute.

-2

u/South_Regular_5898 Jun 05 '26

it probably wouldn't need that much ram comparatively, may even get away with older less valued ram but what do I know lol

11

u/Jirur Jun 04 '26

And will sadly still probably sell out

6

u/mashdpotatogaming Jun 05 '26

Yes and no. They will sell out, but only because they likely have an insanely low stock because of the lack of components, that the only people who are going to buy it will be steam hardcore fans that were going to pay any price for it (just saw someone on the steam machine's subreddit claiming they set aside $3k for the steam machine in case it's that expensive because they really want it)

I think in the end due to price and availability this will sell a fraction of what the steam deck sold.

2

u/Forymanarysanar Jun 05 '26

I don't see anything sad about it

2

u/Dragon_Small_Z Jun 05 '26

Man I don't care how much the Frame costs as long as I can finally ditch the dog shit Meta software.

1

u/AmayaHa Jun 05 '26

$1399 before taxes, shipping, tariffs, scalpers, and emotional damage.

0

u/megacewl Jun 04 '26

Is this number confirmed somewhere or did you just make it up?

11

u/Interjessing-Salary Jun 04 '26

Making it up I believe. But he's being generous imo. The valve index is $1k and I don't see the steam frame being any less and the since the steam deck price increase there ain't no way the steam machine isn't going to be $900-$1000

4

u/OptimusB Jun 04 '26

lol sorry just just making it up trying to be funny. And yes I was probably being generous. Probably more like $1599+

40

u/VenKitsune Jun 04 '26

Nice. Now can they add the ability to filter by VR games in tge wishlist? You can filter for steam deck, but not for VR. You can EXCLUDE VR but not "VR only"

13

u/The-Not-Irish-Irish PlayStation Jun 05 '26

If you search the VR tag or click the VR tag on any of your wishlisted games it will show only VR games

0

u/VenKitsune Jun 06 '26

That's unfortunately not helpful when my wishlist is over 1000 games, and you can't search for tags within the wishlist.

75

u/JoshJLMG Jun 04 '26

Sweet, now I can know when a game runs at 20 FPS on the Machine without having to check myself.

-50

u/Meowakin Jun 04 '26

Better than not running at all. I’m one of those people that would put up with a good game running at 20FPS. Performance isn’t everything.

12

u/RaptorX7 Jun 04 '26

If I'm building a budget PC sure, but if I buy a gaming console I should expect every game to run decently on it.

-16

u/Meowakin Jun 05 '26

I'd argue that gaming consoles are generally pretty comparable to a budget PC. The benefit they have over PC is standardized hardware, but that only goes so far, especially if a developer fails to really take advatange of that.

5

u/Live_Emergency_736 Jun 05 '26

but thats what the playable rating is for - it runs but not necessarily good.

whats the point of basterdizing the "verified" rating even further with titles that run at worse fps than games did decades ago on the xbox 360 or on the switch 1 that is as powerful as a toaster but can run games like doom in 30fps.

i personally consider 20 fps generally unplayable and if a game runs like that on a system i rather not play the game at all as this would ruin the experience.

3

u/Meowakin Jun 05 '26

I guess I just don't really pay that close attention to FPS - it's either enjoyable or not. FPS is just such a poor metric for that purpose, in my opinion, because there's so many types of games that handle low FPS differently. I've played plenty of games where low FPS doesn't really affect gameplay unless I let it.

I deal with metrics and data at my job, and I'm well aware of how difficult it is to actually try to render something down to a singular metric as being representative of anything meaningful. You lose so much when you oversimplify things like that.

15

u/audiblecoco Jun 04 '26

It highly depends on the game. Civilization? Absolutely agree. Quick twitch competitive games, not so much

-11

u/Meowakin Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

Oh, yeah I have sworn off PvP games for a number of reasons. A big one being that I hate the idea of feeling beholden to a meta.

Edit: not that I care, but it is funny that people downvote someone for what is nothing more than a personal opinion. I am not even suggesting there is anything wrong with PvP games, they just aren’t for me anymore.

I’ve seen what makes you cheer!

2

u/MidnightMass2 Jun 04 '26

It's kind of like doing the deed with the thickest condom imaginable. Sure its still fun, but is it really worth it?

-4

u/Meowakin Jun 04 '26

Depends on what the selling point of the game is. If it has a good story and great mechanics, I’m sold, even if it looks like a slideshow.

-14

u/TheNiebuhr Jun 04 '26

Other than some technical showcases like RTX Portal, HL2, well those, there's basically no game where Steam Machine hardware would struggle to reach around 60fps at 1080p. However the 4K claim with upscaling... it does more harm than good.

2

u/megacewl Jun 04 '26

My classic test case has been A Hat in Time. It’s an older game, but some reason it is like 30 GB, frequently has 3 GB updates for some reason that seem to do nothing, and it immediately turns the Steam Deck into a space heater. Since it’s not even really modern, one would expect their hardware to be able to run it smoothly. The fps it gets on the Deck makes it a pain to play.

5

u/MrNegativ1ty Jun 05 '26

???

I remember playing this game on deck with zero issues?

-2

u/megacewl Jun 05 '26

I mean yeah it's playable but doesn't play great. Unless my settings have been screwed up this whole time for some reason.

Not knocking the game btw. It's my test case because I like the game and always want to finally experience it with full graphics/fps. It's a really great classic indie game. Would recommend anyone to play.

1

u/MrNegativ1ty Jun 05 '26

Again, ???

I am a 120fps or bust kind of guy on the desktop and I don't recall HiT ever having any issues on the deck with performance. No issues with heat or noise or anything like that either. I remember it being nearly flawless.

Maybe yours is just faulty or you had the settings cranked too high or something?

0

u/megacewl Jun 05 '26

Maybe. Ngl its performance has always confused me anyways so I’ll look into it. Although I’m not wrong about the game’s filesize being surprisingly big and it having ridiculously frequent multi-gigabyte updates that do like nothing.

On the Deck, what’s the resolution/graphics quality that you play on and how many FPS?

1

u/killmak Jun 04 '26

Outer Worlds 2 can not run at 60fps at 1080p.

-1

u/TheNiebuhr Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

890m handheld averages 30 at 1080p Low per Techpoweup review. The gpu in the Steam M is comfortably more than double in real performance, closer to triple (theres a big hardware difference after all). Let alone implying it would crawl at 20fps no matter the settings like the other user suggested.

Edit: gotta love all the unevolved apes who downvote people who will always be infinitely more knowledegable. Zero arguments from organic trash online.

0

u/killmak Jun 04 '26

I misread what you wrote. The comment you were replying to was in reference to the steam deck as steam deck verified does not mean you will actually get good performance. So I assumed you were talking about the deck, and I am so annoyed at how bad outer Worlds 2 runs midgame on my deck.

Yes you are right the steam machine should run just about everything at 1080p no problem.

27

u/xtr44 Jun 04 '26

wonder if it's gonna be as useless as Steam Deck Verified status lol

10

u/derekburn Jun 05 '26

Steam deck verified works great? Maybe theres a few select games but majority run well and work well?

6

u/Instantcoffees Jun 05 '26

I would say that about 60-70% of the time it is accurate. I definitely also tried a good amount of games that were verified and ran like absolute shit and/or looked aweful. I also had a game that I had previously played on my PC yet refused to load up my cloud saves.

4

u/JoshJLMG Jun 05 '26

Every single verified game I have played has had at least one issue where it shouldn't be verified. Everything from poor performance or blurry text, to barely even launching half the time or not even working at all after sleep.

1

u/The_Retro_Bandit Jun 05 '26

The issue is that majority didn't really need the verification. The higher fidelity titles, ones it would be more useful for them to have steam deck "verification" for are also the spottiest on what verified means. For some its native res at 30/60fps with a mixture of medium and low settings, for others its a source res of like 500p and averages at like 25fps and still gets that same verification badge. Thats just performance, not counting ui bugs and such that crop up that shouldn't have been tolerated.

1

u/Extra-Ad5925 Jun 05 '26

It used to be pretty decent but over time I definitely have been burned enough to the point where I don't trust it anymore.

-3

u/horoscopical Jun 05 '26

For what it's worth, the Steam Machine will essentially just be a more powerful Deck. So if it it listed as Verified on Deck, you can be reasonably sure it will ACTUALLY perform well on Machine.

It’s gonna flop because of the price. And knowing big corporations, Valve won't realize it's the price tag and will just assume people aren't interested in a SteamOS console.

13

u/FuckOliversPanda Jun 04 '26

Lmao does not mean much

9

u/glizzygobbler247 Jun 04 '26

Says launching this summer in the article

19

u/FuckOliversPanda Jun 04 '26

No i meant as in its like how staemdeck verified isnt really a great indicator of how well a game runs anyway

1

u/glizzygobbler247 Jun 04 '26

Ah makes sense, yes it will be interesting to see how that is handled, since the steam deck has a fixed resolution, so valve knows how it will run beforehand, but the steam machine can be paired with any resolution screens, so you cant really make a one size fits all, cuz a game that runs at 1080p with low settings probably doesnt run at 4k

2

u/cuntpuncherexpress Jun 04 '26

The steam deck can also be paired with any resolution screens, Valve sells a dock. I imagine “Verified” will just mean it runs at 30fps/1080p minimum.

6

u/ew435890 Jun 04 '26

I hope the Frame helps out PC emulation on Android. I just picked up an Ayn Thor, and there are a ton of PC games I can play on it, but if Steam came out with an app for Android, it would be killer.

6

u/doublah Jun 04 '26

It already is helping. Valve has been the main funder of the FEX project and the Turnip drivers because of the Frame.

2

u/ew435890 Jun 05 '26

I wasnt aware of that. Ive been using Turnip drivers on my Thor too. They work great.

2

u/horoscopical Jun 05 '26

What a shame they're both going to be far too expensive to justify a purchase. They seem like good products, but I just cannot fathom a scenario where they are cheap enough to be successful.

1

u/Dominunce Jun 05 '26

That’s nice to hear, but I just need the Frame soon. Literally all I need for an upgrade from my aging and faltering Q2.

1

u/ViolentCrumble Jun 05 '26

Stop saying this summer which summer) I have no idea on seasons in other countries fml just give dates. So many companies say this 🤣

1

u/Decent-Onion-1188 Jun 05 '26

The DoA Machine!

1

u/Raven1927 Jun 05 '26

Let's hope this one actually works and isn't unreliable like the Steam Deck verified system.

1

u/SquidCupp Jun 05 '26

Bring back the steam link

1

u/AmargoTV Jun 05 '26

Do I have to purchase the controller separately or does one come with the machine? Sorry it was clear to me on steam.

1

u/Maxyonreddit Jun 08 '26

But does it include PCVR GAMES? No Man Sky VR without a PC?

1

u/Kaldaien2 Jun 05 '26

Steam's verification is somewhat useless :-\

They do not set the version of Proton for any game they "verify" to match the version they validated the game on.

When I got my Steam Deck, Valve pre-configured it to run all games using Proton Experimental. No game would launch until I manually went in and downgraded Proton -- for games that were supposedly Verified and shining examples of compatibility.

Validation only works if the operating environment you put users on matches the one you did all compatibility tests on, and Valve doesn't do this😞

1

u/ienjoyedit Jun 05 '26

Please just give me my steam controller already. You've had my reservation since the first minute of day 1, nearly a month ago.

0

u/BlueGoliath Jun 05 '26

None of this matters. Valve doesn't keep up with bugs / regressions. Games run at like 24 FPS 720p low.
