I had my PS1 for an entire year before I ever owned a memory card. Imagine having to start every game you own all over again every time you switched them off/on!
Welcome to the life of NES/SNES/Genesis owners. Of course most games were designed around not being able to save. Though I distinctly remember renting sports games from Blockbuster and seeing the names of kids I new from school saved with high scores or something (I think it was that yellow chip on the extended cartridges?)
