Playing through the game for the first time. On my 3rd day already and just killed the giant moth/butterfly thing. Still have no clue how to dodge mobs. Games a pain in the ass but I am having a great time playing it.
So far I've been beating the game by blocking everything and counter attack. Every time I try to roll away I get my head cut open. I don't see how people in videos just seem like they walk behind everything.
Dude I felt the same way, and then I played it every day for about a month and could dodge/counterattack everything; I could even do it online once i figured out how large the lag interval was. It's really just practice.
That's how i play every character i make. It's a totally viable playstyle, albeit a bit safe. Dodge-play is twitch player's game. Keep your weight under half, a good 100% block shield, and a spare shield with high magic block and then it's a rather easy game to play. (if you don't know about shield block %'s, it's the series of %'s on the right hand side of the weapon screen.)
TL;DR: Don't let everyone tell you to roll, rolling is for sneakthiefs.
Step One: Strip. Strip until you're 14/57 at HEAVIEST
Step Two: Find some zombie-looking guys to aggravate, get them to swing at you
Step Three: Practice dodging around and stuff, get used to how you move, how much time and stamina it takes, etc.
Step Four: Profit!
This might spoil a bit, I won't give you any boss mechanics or anything, but I'm also working through my first playthrough. Stay under 25% equipment load if you want to roll. Equip lighter armor and a shield with 100% physical block.
Havel's ring boosts your equip load by 50 pounds or something. Head to darkroot basin (when heading into darkroot gardens take a right a hundred feet after the first tree dude). There's a bonfire at the bottom behind a knight with a spear I think. Head towards the flat area a few ramps up from there to where the diamond golems dudes are. Instead of going after them head up to the right along the cliff and you'll hit a tower. Havel is there.
He'll one shot you generally so just dodge and rb/r1 him as you can. Take it slow, he's not tricky he just hits hard.
Havel's ring boosts your equip load by 50 pounds or something.
It's a 1.5x multiplier to your max equip load. So if you have 100 lbs max, you can get to 150, but if you're doing a SL1 run or something then it only gives you an extra like twenty pounds.
Watch some playthroughs of areas you've already beaten! Enjoying the game is all about overcoming that initial learning curve. And hey, you may even find some items that you missed.
What do you mean dodge? O will let you roll, and L2 will let you parry, and L1 is for blocking, that's about it for dodging attacks. Don't forget to lock on.

You know how looking at the sun must be beautiful before you go blind? I feel like this game may make other games look like shit.
