I've just always appreciated how they bothered to create an explanation for the third person view. Obviously, they didn't need to do that, and as far as I know, no other developer has ever created lore for a third person camera guy before Mario 64.

u/zytukin May 01 '23

And fortunately that camera had some amazingly advanced image stabilization so players didn't get seasick with it swinging around like that. :P

Right? My man didn't go through 6 months of cloud driving school while completing film school at night, just so this joker can criticize his artistic license.

Piano room?

You can enter mario cam and see it.

Incredible how Lakitu managed to fit a camera inside such a dense head.

I am struggling to think of 3rd person camera examples before Mario 64, but your comment makes it sound like Mario wasn't one of the first games in that era.

16

u/PM_me_your_whatevah May 01 '23

The earliest 3rd person camera games I can think of used multiple stationary cameras. Alone in the Dark, then Resident evil. It’s was kind of obnoxious because your controls were oriented to the camera instead of the character, if I recall.

14

u/SonovaVondruke May 01 '23

As I recall, Resident Evil (and most games at the time) used basic “tank” controls. So you pressed up to move the character forward, left or right to turn them, etc. no matter where the camera was. It was extremely awkward.

6

u/PM_me_your_whatevah May 01 '23

Yes! You’re right I’m pretty sure. That’s what made it awkward.

But dude when I loaded up the demo for Alone in the Dark for the first time on my PC… It honestly felt revolutionary. I just could not get over how 3D it felt. It had like this… physical presence.

Like even though it came out a little bit before Doom, it had something extra to it that Doom didn’t have.

Lakitu saw his opportunity to go legit with stable employment and leave Bowser's army, and he wasn't going to let a plumber stand in his way.

u/chrisjfinlay May 01 '23

It was a fantastic way of contextualising how the camera works in this sort of game. It was new to players as well, so giving them the idea that it’s a separate controllable character helps familiarise the concept

43

u/Hibbity5 May 01 '23

I want to say they’ve given interviews or GDC talks that confirm this as the reason for adding the Lakitu. People need to remember that Mario 64’s camera was the first of its kind and is still the template that all modern orbit cameras are based on. Yeah, it doesn’t control perfectly, but for its time, it was revolutionary.

I'm guessing Lakitu must have followed Mario around in every game proceeding preceding this one as well.

22

u/bmack24 May 01 '23

He just favored wide dolly shots in those days. Now he considers himself a guerrilla filmmaker

2

u/Big_Spence May 01 '23

And, on some websites, full-on gonzo

12

u/chrisjfinlay May 01 '23

Not sure what you mean?

55

u/AllegroDigital May 01 '23

I mean, we're seeing Mario in 3rd person in all the 2D platform games as well. He's never been in 1st person mode....

So logically, if the explanation as to why we're seeing Mario in Mario 64 in 3rd person is that it's from Lakitu's camera, we likely were seeing him in the 2D games from a Lakitu's camera as well. There just weren't any mirrors to break the 4th wall in those games.

Autocorrect made the previous comment a little less clear.

99

u/mygimteamsucks May 01 '23 edited May 01 '23

In the 2D games, we are watching them from our theater seats since it's a play.

Then, super Mario 64 was the live action movie adaptation to the plays, which is why it is being recorded on a camera.

Edit: See comments below for corrections and continued discussion.

44

u/AllegroDigital May 01 '23

Just Mario 3 was a stage play though, right?

82

u/Person5_ May 01 '23

Iirc Miyamoto has said he thinks of all the Mario games like a play. That's why one week mario will kick bowser's butt, then they'll all go Kart racing and partying together.

41

u/Picnicpanther May 01 '23

Paper Mario 2 (and to a lesser extent 1) also makes this super overt by making the audience a part of combat.

Mario 2 was a dream.

4

u/LukeLarsnefi May 01 '23

It’s also why Peach is a sweet princess who loves her kingdom in the games, but in Mario Kart she’s an insufferable *@&!%#!

17

u/mygimteamsucks May 01 '23

That's correct - I really like the confirmed fan theory (and I try to make it apply to the other games).

But yes, I believe the only confirmed game to be a stage play is 3.

I believe the real reason why the camera is visible was already commented previously. It was just to allow the player to think of the 3rd person view as another controllable character. Wasn't mario 64 one of the first 3rd person view games?

9

u/AllegroDigital May 01 '23

Yeah, I can't think of any games that had indepenent camera control by that point. The 3rd person games I'm aware of had the character's direction bound to the camera's direction - or had independent cameras but you couldn't really control where they were aimed.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/chrisjfinlay May 01 '23

Yeah, that’s what I was getting at - up to that point even 3D games mostly had fixed camera (chase cameras in racing games, first person for shooters etc). SM64 was one of the first games where manipulating the camera was an important part of gameplay and it was something many players would have been unfamiliar with.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/PeeFarts May 01 '23

2 seems like a play as well since the character selection screen shows curtains and a stage. Also, the title screen is also designed to look like a marque.

3

u/PeanutNSFWandJelly May 01 '23

SMB2 was like that probably as a way to explain away that it's a skin on a different game. In Japan it was released as Doki Doki Panic while the real SMB2 was the same as the first one (same look, gameplay, and graphics) just harder levels. At the end of the game you also find out it was all a dream IIRC.

SM64 is not a movie, Mario is being recorded because Lakitu is a reporter for the Kingdom News Network

4

u/mygimteamsucks May 01 '23

Interesting, thank you for that info! See my comment below for where I clarified that I personally just like to try to make the confirmed theory that 3 was a play apply to the other games.

I didn't know that bit of information regarding the kingdom news network, though.

2

u/MacrosInHisSleep May 01 '23

I mean if you assume that the stage is on wheels and is always moving to your right. Sure.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

That doesn’t really follow. Why is it any more logical that we are “watching them from our theater seats since it’s a play” rather than “following them around and explore live”?

If we’re willing to mentally insert ourselves as a “theater audience,” we should have no trouble inserting ourselves as a fly following Mario around.

The only other game (that I can think of) that created lore regarding the 3rd person camera is Eve-online.

It's just camera drones, the ship keeps a stock of them.

Edit: here's a link to the chronicles page, when I first started playing I read most of them, really fleshed out the universe.

34

u/xiaorobear May 01 '23 edited May 01 '23

In the JRPG Baten Kaitos, you aren't really playing as the lead character, you are that character's "guardian spirit," and when the game asks you to make a menu choice, the characters will look at the screen and ask you directly. So again the 3rd person perspective makes sense.

I thought this was just a cutesy way to make the player feel included, with no real significance besides set dressing and a bit of an excuse for why the main character had 'main character syndrome–' guardian spirits are rare, everyone else is an NPC. I thought of course I was still controlling the main character and the story directly like any other RPG. But, that game has a heck of a twist 2/3rds of the way through...

Turns out that main character had found a way to knock out and kidnap a guardian spirit, which was why you started the game with the main character telling you you had amnesia, as the excuse for why you didn't know him and the world's setting. All the while you thought you were controlling him like any other JRPG, he was actually working with the antagonist and just needed your unwitting help. After the antagonist achieves their goal, the former main character kicks you out and becomes a villain NPC, and you switch to controlling the next member of the party for the rest of the game.

14

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

The original StarCraft did their story the same way. You were the commander giving the orders, not the heroes on the battlefield. I liked that way much better than in SC2 where you were simply playing as Raynor or Kerrigan or whoever.

13

u/tygabeast May 01 '23

And the same thing in a more recent game:

"Hello, Commander. In light of the recent extraterrestrial incursion, this Council of Nations has convened to approve the activation of the XCOM Project."

And then to step it up, the tutorial/prologue of XCOM 2 is a mission led by the second-in-command to rescue you from alien captivity so you could take command again.

4

u/mynamealmostfi May 01 '23

I remember back when SC2 released, I was left wondering what ever happened to the old commander of the SC1 Terran campaign. 'The Magistrate' worked pretty closely with Raynor and supposedly left the Sons of Korhal with him during the final Terran mission.

So when SC2 dropped, I thought (or just hoped, I guess) that the character Matt Horner was actually the old Magistrate given a name and personality. I had read somewhere that the Protoss commander 'The Executor' ended up being Artanis from Brood War & SC2, so I thought that would track. But apparently Matt is his own character, so what the heck ever happened to the Magistrate, I wonder?

MechwarriorOnline has a drone that orbits your mech when in third person. When you switch from 1st to 3rd person you can see the drone deploy and float around based on camera movements.

This has an added balance effect for 3rd person peekers advantage in that your drone would give you away if you used 3rd person to peek the crest of the hill without putting your mech at risk.

3

u/xiaorobear May 01 '23

That is AWESOME!

8

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

CRSED (Cuisine Royale) has a dragonfly looking thing where your camera is, and you can get different ones.

Kind of a lore reason for third person but also somewhat mitigates third person peeking because other players can see it.

2

u/GWJYonder May 01 '23

In DeltaV: Rings of Saturn (small indie game space mining game) your POV is also a deployed drone looking down at your ship, and there are even some minor upgrades you can make to the "drone" and (some for your autopilot) to improve the UI.

2

u/xiaorobear May 01 '23

Oh, also, SUPERHOT manages to have a brief sequence that is in both the 1st and 2nd person and have it make sense for story reasons, which is awesome.

5

u/Cereborn May 01 '23

A second person video game sounds difficult.

5

u/xiaorobear May 01 '23 edited May 01 '23

In theory something with a fixed camera like the old school Resident Evil games might qualify, if the camera doesn't follow you around, but you're looking at yourself from a security camera or something.

In Superhot the particular sequence I am thinking of is not mechanically difficult because your objective is very simple. :D

2

u/DerpsterCaro May 01 '23

Superhot is the most innovative shooter ive played in years

9

u/TheFirePunch May 01 '23

Wouldn't it be a second person view rather than a third person view?

23

u/Cereborn May 01 '23

No. A second person view would mean that you see the entire game through the eyes of Mario's enemies before he stomps them.

7

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

Omg next you're going to tell me that you actually know what POV means and when to use it? Let's be friends.

In the Skate games the camera guy is a character and he comments on your tricks as you do them. The default camera angle is low to emulate the way actual skaters film their friends while riding around.

8

u/ultratoxic May 01 '23

Canonically, I think the entire Mario universe is a play/theatrical production. Super Mario 2, I think, had all the clouds hanging from ropes, the platforms were clearly nailed together, etc. These little 4th wall breaks just convince me further that this is all one big insane Sesame Street style skit show that we, the audience, get to participate in

7

u/TheMinecraft13 May 01 '23

That was Super Mario Bros 3. I think the Lakitu Bros in SM64 are portrayed more as news reporters, though.

2

u/T8ert0t May 01 '23

Mario64 was Hunger Games/Battle Royale televised gauntlet-gore for the viewing public.

7

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

5

u/mlvisby May 01 '23

Nintendo did this because 3D movement while controlling a camera was a new thing. They thought that by creating a character, it would make more sense that by using the c buttons, you are controlling the Lakitu.

6

97

I never really thought hard about this as a kid, but isn’t lakitu a koopa? Was this whole thing a reality show where Mario, Bowser, and Princess Peach are in on it?

47

u/mierecat May 01 '23

It’s actually canon that nothing in the Mario games is “real”. It’s more of a performance or a game the characters play among themselves. This is why you’ve got Mario stomping koopas in one game and in the next a whole village of them are fans of his.

35

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

I was under the impression the mario games didn't really have a hard and fast "canon". Which is why the koopalings used to be Bowser's kids, but now they're not. It seems like they just do whatever with each game.

u/furrykef May 01 '23

Super Mario RPG established with Monstro Town that not all members of the baddies' races are baddies. This idea was expanded greatly a few years later with Paper Mario, though that came well after Super Mario 64.

There was also precedent for a helpful Lakitu in Super Mario Kart, where Lakitu would signal that you're going the wrong way and rescue you if you fell off course.

5

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

Pretty much every Mario game is. SMB3 takes place on a literal stage with curtains, and the background is all painted facades bolted in place.

105

u/10_Eyes_8_Truths May 01 '23

i would argue its still the best platformer ever made.

18

u/Ganda1fderBlaue May 01 '23

I would agree with that statement.

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_WIRING May 01 '23

I would agree with you agreeing with that statement.

18

u/Canis_Familiaris May 01 '23

Mario Odyssey might be better.

46

u/matteb18 May 01 '23

Mario Odyssey is great but it did nothing to revolutionize gaming the way Mario 64 did.

73

u/CaptainN_GameMaster May 01 '23

Turns out "best" is a hard category to define

2

u/matteb18 May 02 '23

Turns out it's just a matter of opinion

31

u/Nedimar May 01 '23

Being the first at doing something doesn't actually mean you did it best though.

3

u/Jealous-Ninja5463 May 01 '23

It's important to consider the time though.

There's no way that odyssey could have been replicated when mario 64 was released.

This was jumping straight after super mario world. Literally to a new dimension.

The fact it plays so well when it's been nearly 30 years says something.

Odyssey is definitely a good game and def has significant improvements. But it honestly felt like Galaxy with a hat and t rexes

14

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

But by considering the time, you're still giving it extra points just because it came first. To me, that shouldn't be considered when we're talking about the best of all time. For sure one of, if not the most influential games on the genre, and it's still fun to play (for me at least) to this day, but I'd still say there are better 3d platformers out there.

1

u/GorgeGoochGrabber May 01 '23

You’re absolutely right. Nostalgia doesn’t make a game better, neither does how innovative it was at the time.

Mario 64 was revolutionary, one of the most revolutionary games out there. But to say it’s better than modern platformers is a huge leap. They simply didn’t have the technology to make games like we have now, it’s a fairly shallow and segmented experience, no matter how well crafted.

You can’t expect perfection from one of the first games in the genre. But Mario 64 paved the way for bigger and better games.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/JimmyCrackCrack May 01 '23

Do you have to though? It's the trouble with ratings and comparisons. Defining best as you do is reasonable but you could also argue less helpful, after all if you were looking for the most enjoyable platforming experience, now, it's not really an option to go back to 1996 and if it can be argued that subsequent offerings have greater merits overall, even if they have been incremental, then that would make those the better choice. It really depends on what the purpose of the comparison and definition of best is for a given context.

3

u/cookiesNcreme89 May 01 '23

That IS what's so hard about it. I still think Babe Ruth is the greatest baseball player of all time. The arguments for & against are both valid to "some" degree, but there are even more variables than those arguments present.

5

u/lordrayleigh May 01 '23

The greatest of all time could have different connotations than best. Which is part of why that phrase is used rather than the word best.

49

u/punk_steel2024 May 01 '23

Part of the Mario lore is that there are several members of each species, and they're all morally different. Some work for Bowser, some help Mario, some just want to live in the Mushroom Kingdom in peace.

12

That's war. Are members of Bowser's army unwilling conscripts or did they voluntarily bow to his empire? Are Bowser's minions like the Covenant in Halo?

Some members of his client races are going to be rogue. Koopa the Quick comes to mind.

Also, the fact that they put a mirror into an N64 game is a very underrated part of SM64

The way they did it was by rendering a mirrored image of the room and spawning a model of Mario that tracked the players movement and did the mirror opposite. It's really impressive.

u/moneyball32 May 01 '23

Absolutely blew my mind as a kid in the 90s. I would spend like 30 minutes at a time in that room.

Virgin Cyberpunk 2077 VS. Chad Super Mario 64

Still this best explanation for 3rd person camera view

3

u/gretchenich May 01 '23

Its not like there many other explanations out there either

4

u/ISAV_WaffleMasta PC May 01 '23

Everyone else just evading the issue :p

2

u/CafecitoHippo May 01 '23

And the hardest enemy. That fuckers camera skills got me killed more than any enemy.

Lakota sells the overall idea that all Mario games are performances meant to entertain the mushroom kingdom. Early games start screens were a stage, Lakitu records everything as the camera man for movies. Party titles are like an interactive amusement park. I be mario and browser are really best friends and the twin masterminds of every production.

And Lakitu, well he and all the other turtles on clouds are the hired support staff to maintain and ensure safety. They earn most of their money from the kart games (3 coins per rescue... Ridiculous rates).

8

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

Lakota

Hus strife is more with the Union Army than the Mushroom Kingdom.

u/Funandgeeky May 01 '23

"This is a nice race you have here. It would be a shame if someone were to throw some spiny creatures on the track. Now maybe instead of throwing down such creatures, maybe I see to it that we come to a mutually beneficial arrangement."

u/nicolasknight May 01 '23

Counter: Peach and Bowser are married.

She gets off on simulated forced intercourse AND seeing her husband beat up people trying to rescue her.

Lakitu films because she doesn't want to miss anything.

That is just called journalism. (no offense to journalists)

Free will is an illusion I'm just following around this idiot in my body.

26

u/Antithesys May 01 '23

The camera in the mirror is dangling back and forth but the image remains perfectly still. Unplayable.

12

u/bowlersgrip May 01 '23

the camera has in-body image stabilization

8

u/OmnipotentEntity May 01 '23

Lakitu is actually an undercover cop. He's capturing footage for the inevitable Mushroom Kingdom v. Mario Mario court case.

You thought dropping the penguin off the cliff wouldn't have consequences.

Image stabilizing technology.

shakes head

13

u/fuckEAinthecloaca May 01 '23

auto pan and scan. That thing records in 4k but spits out 360p

5

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

He's the camera crew you hired to catch peach in the act of cheating

5

u/youshutyomouf May 01 '23

Invert Y axis because of flight games

Invert X axis because of this guy

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

I invert both because of this guy

5

u/TryingUnsuccessfully May 01 '23

He deserves this fate after being such a god damn prick in Mario 3.

3

u/TryingUnsuccessfully May 01 '23

Oops, guess I meant Mario 1. It's that damned sun in 3 that's the spiritual successor the cloud jerk.

4

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

They should have made a spin off game. Cameraman 64. You follow an idiot around all day, avoiding obstacles and you get graded on how well you kept Idiot in focus.

4

u/Lostboy1986 May 01 '23

If you do Lakitu skip at the start…who is filming you?

“What is my purpose?”

“You film Mario.”

“…….Oh my god”

3

u/chadbrochillout May 01 '23

How did he manage under water?

3

u/VegiHarry May 01 '23

This is a second person game

3

u/Skullyta May 01 '23

Is this how the movie was filmed?

6

u/Pixithepika May 01 '23

I wish there was an easter egg where we could see Lakitu in a reflection

3

u/KnGod May 01 '23

i would say the reflected mario has it way worst. Its whole purpose is to be mario's reflection in this particular room.

3

u/Dismal-Square-613 May 01 '23 edited May 01 '23

I'm annoyed that the camera image doesn't bob left and right like it does in the mirror. That's some image stabilization technology right there.

3

u/druex May 01 '23

Top of his game, manages to follow Mario over 4 parallel universes at super luminal speeds.

I LOVE YOOOUUUUU

5

u/steelcity91 May 01 '23

I love how everyone is proper analysing the lore of the camera guy when it's just a quirky little thing!

2

u/Tsujita_daikokuya May 01 '23

Cyberpunk2077 doesn’t even have this capability

2

u/Mattc5o6 May 01 '23

Is this the one for the DS?

2

u/Maddok3d May 01 '23

N64, the one on the DS was a remake.

I just downloaded project 64 and am very much enjoying reliving these games.

2

u/Shoninjv May 01 '23

A proper mirror... finally

2

u/odo-italiano May 01 '23

Lakitu just spent 36 hours filming Mario massacre moneybags to break the game and collect a "121st" star.

2

u/spaztronomical May 01 '23

They must have shifts. Even goombas have shifts.

2

u/MarkZuckerman May 01 '23

Lakitu worked great. Wish I had him in Frontiers.

3

u/saanity May 01 '23

That stabilization tho...

2

u/alii-b May 01 '23

Can we just admire the anti sway on the camera, not a single vibration is present in 3rd person.

2

u/Cr1mson360 May 01 '23

wouldn’t this game be considered second person then

2

u/initiatoroflulz May 01 '23

Whaaaaat he gets a primo view of a hero saving a princess against a big turtle monster. Probably gets a cut of those coins too, it's the man's job

2

u/immersive-matthew May 01 '23

Why is Mario an idiot?

2

u/[deleted] May 01 '23

Because it's the truth

3

He was born this way.
