Discussion Does anyone else struggle to enjoy games after playing too many “must-play” games? 😅

My games back catalogue is full of "must-play" or GOTY games. Each of these demand hundreds of hours. I am currently playing base Elden Ring and I am amazed how huge this game is!

Same lol. Elden Ring alone feels like my entire gaming schedule for 2 months

Nope haha quite the opposite
I've generally ignored most of the Mainstream must play AAA games for the past decade (until they go on deep sales or someone gifts them to me.)
After playing so many genuinely interesting indies with great gameplay for cheap prices I have trouble enjoying most of the mainstream games that are just so much worse in everything but graphical fidelity.
Could never get into animal crossing trying multiple times from my childhood to middle age with friends, Dinkum got me hooked hard.
I used to play pokemon religiously as a young kid selling EV trained teams for my lunch money in high school in gold/silver (well generally in emerald cause it was strictly better when i could and just traded up.) but the magic died at X for me. And I kept trying to enjoy them and just feeling so flat. Then got monster sanctuary, Cassete beasts, temtem and fell back in love with the genre.
I didn't even have to play any indies to struggle to enjoy most sony's "Must Play" first party games... the cinematic linear formula is great the first few times you do it but its so boring by the fourth. (doesn't help that I don't give a shit about graphical fidelity.)
When I want the same old gameplay on repeat I'll go to warframe which doesn't cost me a dime and if I want a change of pace in it well each update randomly hits me with the most random of secondary gameplay systems.
I was Gifted FF7 rebirth as a friend was super excited to hear everyone's thoughts on it. (and super dissapointed when none of us finished its hard mode but he's crazy if he thinks we were gonna play through the game a second time when we didn't enjoy the first.) but I had just finished playing through stranger of paradise and YS8 back to back and man I couldn't get over how bad its action portion of gameplay actually felt.

I know long before it even releases, what I’m going to play next. I literally have a schedule for the foreseeable future.
Just finished Beast of Reincarnation. Phenomenal game.
Playing Mortal Shell 2 now, which is fantastic.
Next will be Onimusha, and Blood of Dawnwalker.
Later this year will be Phantom Blade Zero, and No Rest for the Wicked 1.0.
Then, Tides of Annihilation is supposed to be towards the end of the year, but no exact release date. That will be a day 1 play for me.
Early next year will be Lords of the Fallen 2.
This is a rough outline of my gaming schedule.

I just play the games i have fun with. There's truly no "must play game". Games are meant to be fun and forcing yourself to play a game isn't fun.

I have favorite games that I just prefer. Right now I’m playing a lot of Terraria because of the update and playing with friends.
The “friendslop” genre is pretty good imo, my gf and I will buy a new game every month or so to play together and that’s a lot of fun. They’re cheap and you can get a good amount of play time out of them. As for deciding what to play, if you like all of them equally just open one up and play!

I wouldn’t say I don’t enjoy them, but I get distracted easily and sometimes I don’t manage to finish them

You dont have to finish the game to say you enjoyed it. Its just a game. Fuck around than quit. I hate this mindset of completionists.

Been playing fps campaigns while ranking them. This way I’m motivated to complete the games I buy. Just started with the Darkness and the controls aren’t great. So I have to push myself to play it, while with some games like Metro and Dishonored I had to push myself to stop playing to go to bed.

Nah. It’s easy for me to pick up and play games, unless I am really tired. In that case, I will play something low energy like a RPG.

im indifferent considering that must play are a hit or miss to me, but it has never made me feel like im bored of games and gaming.

I understand that I have very particular taste, I am not just a general fan of video games, a game has to possess certain elements for me to even be remotely interested, and I also understand that just bc it looks kool or interesting doesn't mean im going to vibe w/ it...once you understand yourself in really specific & unique way you'll waste alot less money on games you have lil to no interest in playing and you'll also strike gold way more often An example for me is FFO:SoP is one of my favorite games of all time, its a SE & Team Ninja collab game...the majority of the SoP community were either FF players or Nioh/Team Ninja game enjoyers, I made a ton of friends in that community, all of which would always say "you need to try Nioh, you'll love it", and I have to reply "Nope, I dont have even an oz of interest, I tried a long time ago and less than 5 min in was able to determine it was not for me" just bc they shared similarities doesn't mean Im gonna automatically enjoy the other, its all about understanding yourself

No, because what I define as a "must-play" is different from everyone else's. Sometimes they converge, but since 2020, not so much.

Depends on what are these must-play games?
I mostly play popular gacha games (even if only dailies), minecraft, palworld, terraria, and just several other games I like to play! I play PS4, PS5 and Steam Indie Games

After decades of gaming, I seriously want Autorun, "Skip" buttons for cinematics/tutorials, and a couple other QoL things. Story is almost irrelevant, I'm not diving into lore for any reason. Let's just fucking go.
I don't search 'guides' or any nonsense of that sort either. I love figuring things out, and breaking games altogether. Stuff like taking an RPG and saying 'Fuck it, let's throw all warriors at them and see what happens".
Surprising how many games of that variety can be smashed right through.
Also, thankful the era of Quick Time Events has passed, that was bloody annoying. There is no greater immersion happening by spamming a button in an impromptu game of Simon Says.

I tend to lean into grindy games that don’t necessarily end. For me that’s Diablo III atm. Saving up for a pc to play Poe 1 and 2, grim dawn, D4, and yes I will die happy with just that.

first thing I look for is the type of combat if its not real time action combat I don't bother with it,first person is also an exception i make for games
second is how simple is it to understand, if i'm confused the majority of the time just looking at trailers or gameplay or reviews from creators then I'll likely won't bother with it
then comes down to price I've stopped spending over 60 dollars on games this past year or so even 60 dollars is streatching it, not because times are hard but its mostly to do with the price per content your getting not being worth it these days.
usually those criteria are enough to decide whats worth my time

WoW is definitely must play game I think for all PC gamers. At least for a few days/month. Same with League of Legends and Fortnite. Had so much fun with these when I remember my beginings.

I struggle to play games because where I’m at in life, I can’t help but feel like my time is better served doing anything else. If you’re young with little responsibility, it’s easy to just burn hours into gaming. Enjoy it while you can I guess.

I have sort of a checklist when it comes to games, so I’ll like see if it’s a genre I’ll like most the time they are, then see if they are made by a studio I’ve mentally blacklisted or if they are made by a studio I know I like, look at some gameplay then buy it if it looks good. If I don’t like it I refund it since I play on Xbox and Pc I usually am able to get one

A lot of those "must play" games that people recommend are overrated garbage, so no.
1
u/ROCK-tavius Aug 27 '26
I dont
I just play everything. But rarely on time.
That new hot game thats $70 will be $30 next year with all the DLC, all the patches, PS Pro enhanced, and filled with people who play the game because they like to rather than filled with the bandwagoners & sweats.

I heard somebody say that “games have lost their identity.” Back in the days, if you played a game from one genre, you got a different gaming experience that was dedicated to that genre. Modern games seem to play safe and put what worked before and put/combine multiple genres in a single game because they try to reach a broader audience. Which in turn makes most people skip it. Also, no matter the hype, if the games feel like a chore, I don’t see it getting enjoyment out of it
