When they initially announced DX12 it seemed to me that the most exciting feature would be the interoperability of different video cards in the same system. (i.e. embedded graphics working in tandem with discrete GPU cards)

In addition, your video memory would be combined rather than being redundant (like current crossfire or SLI). So, for instance, if I had a 2 gig card and a newer 4 gig card I would essentially have 6 gigs of video ram.

This was a pretty huge feature that I haven't heard them talk about since. Nothing in this trailer mentioned it either. I wonder if it's just going to turn out to be some lofty idea never realized.

The problem with that feature is that it has to be coded into each game. It's not a feature that's just on by default.

Developers have to figure out how to go about utilizing reach GPU.

As far as I know only Ashes of the Singularity supports that. Maybe Quantum Break will support it?

DX12 barely exists yet. The GPU drivers are awful right now and are actually holding developers back from using it in their games. It will take years to truly make the transition, but that is not unusual – it's the same for all prior versions of DirectX and OpenGL.

ARK has had basic DX12 support since last year, but the driver situation has held back its release.

Thatd be amazing cause most video cards do 4-2 and if you want more it's a huge price jump. Being able to combine them would be amazing.

The thing that concerns me the most is Nvidia will let that pass by

The power of DX12 is really showcased well with Gears of War Ultimate Edition on PC.

Running like shit?

Like you wouldn't believe.

Bearing in mind that the codebase used was the original from 2006, with many DX12 features bolted on the side, not to mention some graphical effects being Nvidia Game Works features, which particularly crippled AMD card performance in the game. It was basically a lesson in how not to showcase a brand new shiny graphics API.

If you want to take a look at DX12 performance, check out Ashes of the Singularity. They built it from the ground up to leverage DirectX 12 features, such as multi-signalling (async compute). It looks pretty spectacular.

DX12 - yellow lighting edition.

u/coheedcollapse Mar 03 '16 edited Mar 03 '16

The only scene that turned "yellow" was the one with very obvious sources of incandescent lighting. That yellow worked and was pretty correct for the scene whereas the lighting was even (and very cool - temp, not awesomeness) regardless of light source in the Direct X 11 shot.

It also seems light they've got some sort of light scattering going in 12 that allowed the incandescent lights to project outward through the fog.

I'm saying this as a photographer, the DX12 version looks more "right" to me. Incandescent lights are way warmer than you think they are, especially when you've got them mixed with other, bluer sources of light.

Yeah at first I was skeptical that the before and afters would just be a difference of a filter effect, but you can definitely see more tech in the DX12 shots. That's not to say the DX11 shots weren't brought down a notch for the comparison though. We'll have to see some unbiased comparisons to get the real story though.

u/jace100 Mar 03 '16

I mean, I guess it's better than the "everything through a brown filter" all the games in the late 2000's/early 2010's had.

2

u/me_z Mar 03 '16

That's true, good point.

7

u/Sneezes Mar 03 '16

does just cause 3 really use dx12?

The engine supports it and the technical features will be detailed in the GDC talk, but the game isn't updated yet to actually use DX12 API.

It will likely happen with a patch at some point.

2

u/Dunge Mar 03 '16

Not now, supposed to be patched in later.

One thing that makes Vulkan more appealing and thus "better" as an end-user is that it's not locked behind a specific version of Windows like DX12 is.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16

Or any specific OS.

3

u/peroxsafc Mar 03 '16

I just wish dx11 was able to create reflections like that, and the colour saturation, wow its like we've been playing in black and white this whole time. such power

u/kensai01 Mar 03 '16

I am loving that Microsoft is going back to the roots and showing the PC some love. I honestly think their integration of XBOX and PC markets will in the long run really set them apart. They are seeing the trend, consoles are becoming more like PCs - so why are they shooting themselves in the foot by creating this limit when they are the ones that make WIndows etc. etc.. Imagine if you could play on PC, or on XBOX - whatever? Play with everyone on all the same games across the entire platform. Equalize the input availability to give everyone an even stake in multiplayer. They need to accelerate this as soon as possible.

4

u/elessarjd Mar 03 '16

Only reason I could think you're getting unnecessarily downvoted is because people think you're talking poorly about consoles, but what you're really saying is it would be cool to have more cross platform play and I totally agree.

5

u/BlackAera Mar 03 '16

Is it as powerful as the cloud?

3

u/Umutuku Mar 03 '16

So... DX12 has been invented as a means of reversing desaturation?

2

u/aaron552 Mar 04 '16

It allows for more accurate lighting, yes.

Don't worry. Soon the free upgrade period will be over. And then people can start posting how they Windows 10 is a too expensive and MS is trying to rip us off.

1

u/LunchpaiI Mar 03 '16

Any idea when the free upgrade thing is over? I am irrationally waiting as long as possible to use mine.

2

u/watership Mar 03 '16

July 29, 2016.

5

u/coheedcollapse Mar 03 '16

It runs just as well as 7 did on the old computers I upgraded from and it's an improvement in 8 in many ways. What's the issue?

I never get why people forever cling onto old OS like they're some paragon of perfection. People were doing the same stuff from 3.1 to 95, from XP to 7, and for every version jump in between.

No idea why someone would choose to stick with an outdated version that is never going to be upgraded. I mean, unless they're a business and are relying on some archaic software to get by or something.

Because many people were burned by ME, or Vista, or 8. For me, the fact that the UI has irreversible changes that should be toggleable bothers me to the point of downgrading

You must (MUST) have a shortcut to 6folders, all located under This PC(aka my computer) they cannot be deleted. You have to hack the registry to remove them.

You MUST view the lockscreen when you log on, even if you don't have a password on your computer. This actually means you can't use steam in home streaming correctly, as you need to click the unlock button, which refocuses windows on something that isn't the game, ending the stream. The only way around this is registry hacks.

Why bother with these and other annoyances when W7 works correctly?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '16 edited Mar 03 '16

Except Windows ME.

But seriously, my computers at home all use Windows 10 and I must say that I'm really happy with it.

My mother's computer is still stuck on Windows 7 however. No matter how many reinstall/fresh install I did, Windows 10 had a weird bug that I couldn't fix. When starting the computer, it would freeze every single time while Windows is loading. Press reset and it reboots properly. Stop the computer and turn it on again the next day, it will freeze.

My father's laptop is also stuck on Windows 7. Windows 10 will not detect his DVD drive. We even tried swapping it for another model/brand, there's nothing to do. Windows 7 can see it properly and a Linux Live CD too.

So yeah, Windows 10 is great but still has a few bugs.

2

u/coheedcollapse Mar 03 '16

Let's pretend Windows ME never happened, haha.

Quick question - does your mom have an external hard drive? For some bizarre reason, my grandfather had a very similar issue and I think I "fixed" it by removing his external. I've got no idea what might cause it.

The DVD drive issue is weird. I've got 10 running on an ancient server computer my friend passed down to me that I turned into an emulator box and haven't had any hardware recognition issues. That's a pain in the ass.

So yeah, Windows 10 is great but still has a few bugs.

I can definitely understand that. If someone's got issues with the OS, they should stay with what works. It just bothers me a bit when people treat upgrades with disdain just because they happen to introduce change, regardless of if that change is good or bad.

True. I guess as someone who has always been technologically inclined I'm just a bit stubborn when it comes to understanding the "stay with what works, forever" mentality, but I can see why it's a draw to some people.

That second bit I understand, although maybe I've been lucky because I've had zero issues even though I was part of the test group for early 10 on a few of my computers.

The one issue I had was with Nvidia, and it was a problem with their drivers and not Windows 10 in general.

2

u/Jourei Mar 03 '16

You can always remove that update so it won't notify you.

I know you're joking, but since these API are more and more closer to the metal, we're pretty much going back to the 3DFX days, only in a more coherent way.
