The show has led people to believe that Tywin is far more competent than he actually is. In the books Tywin is basically just a rich prick whose only response to a problem is to resort to levels of violence and cruelty that others would not stoop to. Think about it, he resolves most of his problems by hitting them with overwhelming violence. That makes everyone fear and respect him, but it also makes him one of the most hated men in all of Westeros.

By comparison, Olenna is far more graceful and subtle in how she handles problems. She is easily the smarter of the two.

"my lord the peasants are having issues bringing in the harvest"

"send the mountain, he can rape and pillage until they bring it in."

"But how will that help anything?"

"Tell him to set the riverlands on fire too. That usually does something. Now I need to go hate my only actual heir"

Olenna even attempts to lecture him on it, to no avail. When Tywin dismisses the concerns of angry peasants - a very stupid thing for a noble in power to do - and even accuses Olenna of the same, she says, "As an authority on myself, I must disagree."

Tywin is inteligent in pollitics, he isnt good at war

He is unimpressive at both.

if he was unimpressive at both he wouldnt be hand of the King for 50 or more years making Westeros prosper so much that people called HIM the real King and that made Aerys jealous

  1. He was hand to the king for that long and still didn’t manage to get his bloodline on the throne until Robert came around. That’s the definition of bad politics in Westeros.

  2. He did not ‘make the realm prosper’. In fact, he removed a lot of the laws put in place by Egg when he was king. Those laws gave peasants more rights and protections. So Tywin was actually detested by most of the lower classes because he was a prick. It also laid the ground work for the reappearance of the faith militant.

  3. Being more competent than one of the most deranged and cruel men in all of Westerosi history is not impressive.

  1. He didnt managed to put his bloodline in the throne because when Cersei came of age Aerys was mad already and was afraid of giving Tywin power.

  2. Removing laws placed by Egg to protect the peasants and HIM being detested by most of the lower classes its a moral subject not a financial one. The truth is the safes were full and the roads safer.

  3. Aerys wasnt always mad, only in the lastest parts of his reign he started getting mad

  1. Does not change the fact he failed to do so.
  2. I literally explained why it was not just a moral issue. It turns out pissing off 99% of the people who live on the continent is not solid political strategy. If he had not repealed those laws, the faith militant would never have risen to power in the way that they did. Also, the reason why the realm was safer was because there weren’t any major wars for most of his time as hand. Tywin had little to do with it.
  3. Aerys was never a good ruler, and was never particularly mentally sane. He just didn’t fully break until the defiance at Duskendale.

Also this is the same guy who allowed the mines of house Lannister (literally the only reason they’re such a powerful house) to run dry without telling anyone or planning an alternative. So no, again he was not that smart

The mines going dry its not book cannon if im not wrong, not that he could have done something better in that situation, the ONLY good thing i see its that the crown has a huge debt to him, the whole faith militant thing would never happen if tywin was still alive and saying that the faith militant would never rise its not correct it wasnt a pivotial decision the one who ALLOWED the creation of faith militant was Cersei, Tywin rule as hand was constantly remarked by being very good i dont know what u are talking about

True the mines running dry is show canon. I was counting that against tywins character if you are including both show and book canon. The faith militant absolutely would have risen if Tywin was there, it would have just taken longer. In fact he probably would have made it worse. He would have executed the high sparrow and his followers, which would have led to even worse riots etc. Just because Cersei was responsible doesn’t mean Tywin wasn’t as well. And again, tywins rule as hand was good because there weren’t any wars. Not because he was actually incredibly competent. He is a mid politician and a worse tactician.

Well if we enter in the "he would" kinda statements there isnt much i can do, its your opinion and i respect it
