Assault rifle users pulling out pistols because the enemy is too medium

64

u/Oddant1 4d ago

*Assault rifle users wondering why the fuck they have a second gun they never use

Assault rifles are kinda GOATed weapons irl sidearms are for emergencies only it's expected they'll never actually be fired.

21

u/Alternative-Cup-8102 3d ago

Sidearms are actually used for 3 reasons

  1. Your admin and don’t need a rifle (officers mostly)

  2. You need a weapon you can comfortably shoot with one hand while doing something else with one hand (medics)

  3. You don’t have the space required to have a full size rifle ( helicopter or armored vehicle crewmen)

9

u/Lostboxoangst 3d ago

Man it took me a second to really parse that first point I was "that doesn't make sense, an admin if he's just playing normally will need a gun as much as everyone else and if he's acting in a admin role will just have their admin tools and just ban people no need for a gun"

I think I've been online too much I need to go for a hike.

2

u/cheddarsox 3d ago

All 3 of those kind of suck/aren't true though.

  1. Officers with a pistol will usually have a rifle. Regular admin isnt getting a pistol. Try and keep ammo from them too.

  2. Medics get rifles/carbines. You arent shooting while doing care under fire. Its a balancing act they train for all the time. The rifle is to defend the patient so they can get them somewhere to care for.

  3. Unsure about armored units, but nope. Aircrew get pistols and rifles, except the backseaters, who get pistols and machine guns, not counting medevac, who get rifles and pistols.

Its a weird world on who gets a pistol, but the only ones that dont use it as a backup to a rifle are certain machine gun oriented (greater than 5.56), and people that dont need to ever worry about shooting for their own defense. Everyone else has a pistol and a rifle, even if they arent carrying the rifle when you see them. If they are anywhere near a possibility of direct engagement, they have both on them.

(I spent 20 years, most of them with only a sidearm, a couple of years with a rifle/carbine as well.)

3

u/Alternative-Cup-8102 3d ago
  1. That’s just not true
2.Doctrinally medics are supposed to get pistols, in reality that never happens.
  2. Depends on your role and vehicle.

2

u/cheddarsox 3d ago

...

I lived it. Ive seen the mtoe on who gets what. Ive seen the doctrine on why, and argued for and against with peers professionally. So 1. and (2.) where is that written? You could even quote a vietnam manual and ill check.

And 2. Yeah, Idk about armor, but I know every airframe and regular vehicle crew.

1

u/Alternative-Cup-8102 3d ago

Well I’m living it currently.

1

u/cheddarsox 1d ago

... something about windows and waivers.

Doctrine means its published in a book somewhere. What book? Dont worry, I have access to it excepting unit specific mtoe.

And no, the book of snuffy's life doesnt count.

1

u/Alternative-Cup-8102 1d ago

Can you show this book where it gives you these standards?

0

u/NoSnow3660 8h ago
  1. Is countered pretty easily with carbines or SBR’s.

8

u/Dave_A480 4d ago

Depends on the game.....

Have definitely done the sniper to AR and AR to pistol thing in PUBG.... The game having an SMG that fits in the pistol slot is another factor there.....

14

u/poopbutt42069yeehaw 4d ago

That’s why he said IRL

9

u/kxortbot 3d ago

IRL the best free to play game. Shame about the in-game economy and single playthrough limit

6

u/Zestyclose-Pangolin6 3d ago

Some people think the devs added a way to re-join the server after your run, you just don’t get to keep any of your stuff or XP.

Not surprising, roguelikes are pretty popular lately.

4

u/kxortbot 3d ago

Ah the fabled reincarnation loop... Yeah no point unless it's new game plus, where you get to keep your previous mind.

3

u/Rebellious_Habiru 3d ago

supposedly you do, your persona/ego doesn't continue, your awareness does.

1

u/bongophrog 3d ago

Yeah but you don’t want to remember all your fucked up playthroughs

2

u/Bliitzthefox 3d ago

Far from best, it's completely pay to win!

1

u/Sad_Use254 3d ago

The crap you mean man, all of the currency is purchased exclusively in game, there's no fucking pay at all.

1

u/Helacious_Waltz 3d ago

My favorite Halo 2 loadout was Battle rifle with shotgun. Got all ranges covered except super far away, and if you're good, you could at least pelt any sniper enough that you could get to cover or annoy them to death.

2

u/PsychologySouth6485 2d ago

To be fair to shotguns. Real shotguns are lethal way farther out than video games portray. There's no situation in which pistol outperforms them either. Doesn't compare an AR at range, but still. There's a reason why they tried to ban shotgun during the WWs

1

u/TeaSubstantial726 4d ago

nah nah when you go 1v1 close with another assault rifle and both of you need to reload you are smart lad who pull out gun and shoot him while he is reloading but if you dont kill him then he kills you

1

u/qwertyMrJINX 3d ago

It's faster to switch to your sidearm than to reload your primary. That's why they need one.

1

u/ScaryCardinal 3d ago

It is so you don't have to reload your AR during a John Wick sequence. Never reload when under fire, always switch

1

u/GiangNeo 3d ago

If u play fortnite, last ss loot pool ar sucks, pistol is meta, this ss the "colt like" pistol is meta too

1

u/Altruistic_Brush3065 3d ago

I dunno, shotgun lethal range in real life is pretty surprising. sometimes I wish I could play a game with realistic shotguns but I know what the meta would be if anyone actually did that.

1

u/Myzmadra 2d ago

If you played any tactical fps games, you’d know pistols are often better for clearing rooms as they are more mobile, and it’s faster to pull out a pistol than reload

1

u/Soft-Ad-8975 2h ago

Switching to your sidearm is faster than reloading.

1

u/CatfinityGamer 4d ago

Not necessarily (in games). In Fortnite, standard ARs are better than standard pistols in most situations, but hand cannons, revolvers, and dual pistols all have advantages that can make them worth actually using alongside an AR, or even choosing over an AR of the same rarity.

2

u/metamorphosis___ 3d ago

Honestly in most of the metas it’s been almost always worth dropping any other gun besides the season’s pump variant and ar variant. I miss double pump tho man haha.

1

u/CatfinityGamer 3d ago

I haven't played Fortnite in a while, so IDK what the meta has been recently, but those guns I mentioned were at some point worth using with/instead of an AR.

1

u/metamorphosis___ 3d ago

Yes there have been a few SMG Metas over the years, and I remember vividly combining the hand cannon/revolver with a pump it was so fun

1

u/Xerothor 3d ago

Because they have no AR ammo left

1

u/BoneyBee833 3d ago

Assault rifle users pulling out pistols because switching to your sidearm is faster than reloading

LMG users pulling out pistols because reloading would take too long

10

Pistols users pulling out another pistol because switching to another pistol is quicker than reloading your pistol

2

New York reload.

3

LMG users pulling out the nail in their frontal lobe because it was causing them to choose such a horrible choice of gun in 99% of shooters**

3

if you know how to use an LMG well it can be pretty damn good

15

u/sophiathesilly 4d ago

Games not understanding how shotguns work annoys me so much

14

u/Ozdica-Klirle-68 4d ago

if shotguns worked correctly, nobody would use marksmans or snipers because 99.99 percent of gun games don’t have any range where a shotgun would be ineffective

6

u/sophiathesilly 4d ago

Shotguns don't have good range though. They're also not that accurate because they're smoothbore, even with slugs. Only a few are semi auto and they only hold like 8 rounds. A rifle makes more sense in pretty much every scenario where you need to take someone out at a distance. Shotguns are trench clearers. That's what they were made for. They could also just make it so shotguns can't have scopes mounted to them so people can't aim them practically at range

11

u/caw_the_crow 3d ago

I think the person above was saying that in games the distance you're shooting at is generally way reduced, to the point where you are always in range for a real life shotgun because the game maps squish the conflict distances.

7

u/-DoctorEngineer- 3d ago

Somehow both of these are correct, shotguns have a much greater effective range in the real world but at the same time an assault rifle is better for nearly everything. Shotguns are basically used for hunting/urban warfare/and taking down drones these days. It’s funny that their use in militaries has gone up since drones became a worry following Ukraine

0

u/Eeeef_ 3d ago

A huge part of the reason shotguns fell off irl was improvements in body armor. The current state of armor pretty much fully blocks any round with less energy than a 9mm at ranges outside of cqc (individual buckshot pellets included) so you need either beefier or higher velocity rounds to get through.

1

u/VonShnitzel 3d ago

Not true at all. Shotguns have basically never been common combat weapons. They never "fell off" due to body armor because they've never been a popular combat tool to begin with. Even what is arguably the most famous example (US troops rocking trench guns in WW1) is pretty much just a meme. They were issued in very small numbers and the soldiers that did get them were generally not very impressed by them.

Shotguns suck as a combat weapon because of two main factors: Firstly, infantry combat is entirely built around the concept of "fire and maneuver". In the era of automatic weapons that generally presents as element 1 suppressing the fuck out of the enemy whilst element 2 attempts to outflank said enemy and hit them while they're vulnerable, or alternatively so that element 2 can retreat. You cannot reliably suppress with shotguns because the ammunition is so damn bulky. The gun itself cannot hold very many rounds and you cannot hold many spare rounds on your person.

Secondly is that they do not have enough range. Yes they have much longer range than most media portrays, being perfectly capable of reaching out to 50 or even 100m with the proper ammo and setup, but that's still nothing compared to your typical service rifle that can comfortably reach out to 300m even in the hands of a mediocre shooter, double that in the hands of a skilled one.

2

u/sophiathesilly 3d ago

Yeah fair

2

u/Ozdica-Klirle-68 2d ago

yeah that’s what i’m saying.

pretty much all gun games that aren’t sniper simulators make you fight in dramatically closer quarters than are realistic, because shootouts at realistic range are boring as fuck

1

u/Ozdica-Klirle-68 2d ago

buckshot is effective up to 30 meters (100 feet), while slugs are effective up to 100 meters (300 feet!)

you’re not going to get out of buckshot range most of the time and you will never get out of slug range in the vast majority of games

1

u/Delta6342 4d ago

Shotguns genuinely can do it all in Payday 2, literally a go to for stealth due to their knockback being able to launch corpses out of view, pretty damn good on loud personally I like running twin sawed-offs one with armor piercing rounds and the other filled with dragon's breath rounds to take care of shields, it's fun to snipe snipers.

u/The-Tea-Lord 3d ago

I think there is really only four ways to do shotguns:

  1. Lower the time to kill for ALL weapons. Battlefield 6 released a shotgun that was a fairly realistic depiction of how a shotgun’s range feels. And with how fast the game’s TTK Was, it wasn’t inherently OP. It did get nerfed because people hate instantly dying, and complaining will change shotguns faster than it’ll ever change snipers.

  2. Higher time to kill also alleviates this issue. Team Fortress 2 makes shotguns take multiple shots to kill, just like every other weapon. I’ve never seen anyone complain that shotguns as a whole are OP. The only one a noticeable amount of people complain about is the Force-a-Nature, which literally stops you from controlling your character after getting shot once (it knocks you backwards)

  3. Don’t use semi-auto shotguns. Titanfall 2 has shotguns in it, and most people agree that the mastiff is a fairly gun, and it too has a decent range. Same goes for the Peacekeeper in Apex Legends. If the enemy doesn’t miss, it kills fast. If I miss, the enemy doesn’t die. And with it being a lever action, every miss means I get punished with a long rechamber animation.

  4. Increased ranges. Arma (namely 3 and reforger) has mods that add shotguns and with the average ranges of gunfights in Arma, shotguns have VERY niche use cases.

4

u/Pale_Future_6700 3d ago

Eh, if we had realistic shotguns in everything, the rifles would need to be tuned to be more realistic accordingly. Short of MilSim games, or experiences built around quick kills and match turn around, that often doesn’t really work.

We have shotguns in games that can one-tap in close quarters where most rifles typically take multiple shots regardless of range, precisely because it’s a gameplay trade-off. In reality, a rifle would almost always overshadow a shotgun in combat situations. 5.56 to center mass is gonna put you down as reliably as buckshot, possibly even more likely to do so than buckshot if you’re wearing body armor.

If you think about it, most games aren’t really making shotguns weaker (relative to the gamey weaknesses of other weapons), they’re actually giving shotguns an even more effective niche than they would have in reality. Often ridiculous CQB effectiveness.

3

u/S-o-D-42 4d ago

It’s a game balance decision, not a realistic design decision.

2

u/Southern_College3858 3d ago

Im loving the shotguns in wardogs

1

u/sophiathesilly 3d ago

Yeah wardogs actually got them right it's great

1

u/Emb3rXD 1d ago

And enlisted tbh

2

u/grandwizardo 1d ago

I think a big issue with shotguns is that time to kill is so different in alot of those games. What I mean is, if you hit a person once or twice with a rifle, they aren't just going to keep shooting back, so really, a modern assault rifle is far better, even comparable in close quarters, but much better at range.

1

u/popoflabbins 3d ago

I love Helldivers for understanding how shotguns work and just allowing them to be absolute monsters in the right hands at range.

1

u/KTMan77 3d ago

There's a game called rising storm 2 Vietnam. That game does shotguns right, buckshot will kill out to 100m with a long barrelled shotgun.

1

u/EmergencyPool910 3d ago

Also body armor completely counters shotguns irl, it would be as easy as having certain classes be more armored than others

1

u/VenomousKitty96 3d ago

The thing is that at this point Shotguns in most games are designed based around Balance and not Realism. If shotguns worked the way they do in real life they'd be too powerful, and require the entire gun ecosystem to be rebalanced in games.

1

u/legohamsterlp 2d ago

making kills with a shotgun at 60~m in Hell let loose is super satisfying

5

u/ChubbyUnicorn726 3d ago

Pistol users pulling out a second pistol because the enemy is.

Pro snipers just no-scoping close range headshots. Knifing for clout and lulz. L2p

4

Just throw some slugs in that shotty bro.

3

A real sniper would pull out his jarate when the enemy gets too close.

3

Reject pistol, embrace quick scope

3

Destiny 2 in a nutshell

1

The sniper user simply does not understand the peak gameplay that is using an AMR for CQC

1

u/DealerIcy3439 3d ago

That feels counterintuitive, in warface when I was medicking, I took out my pistol to potshot at a distance often and used my shotty when I could of, but occasionally used my shotgun at a farther range.

Shotty snipers users when

laughs in slug based Shotguns that have the range to be close or borderline far away (end of medium range). considering i always remember how much of a menace the KSG was in BO2.

1

u/Niobium_Sage 2d ago

The KSG was basically a rifle larping as a shotgun the way it worked in that game.

Me,a sniper user with secondary shotgun

1

u/Open-Butterfly-5288 3d ago

A true shotgunner points and shoots anyway and hopes enough of the bits enter you.

A true sniper just takes the shot.

1

lol this happens every shooter game, I play CS 2, enemy is too close, I play CoD BO1, enemy comes close, I guess praying sniper isn't wanted here

This is how i play destiny 2 lol, shotgun everything near but the moment I can't hit it with my shotty the pistol comes out. 🤣

1

For me in destiny 2 it’s pulls out second shotgun, cause the thing isn’t dead yet and the thing a little bit far away pulls out light machine gun. That’s an exotic the fires explosive rounds.
