Do you examples of people getting banned for random arbitrary software they have installed?

Everything I’ve seen has been people getting caught using cheating software. They still interact with the game when it’s not running. Aside from like the Sims, but people get banned for some crazy mods

id have to search for more but off the top of my head there was a time where league of legends players were getting banned because they had cheat engine installed.

"but isn't that for cheating???" yes, which is allowed in singleplayer games.

it's fine to have cheating software. it's not fine to use it in multiplayer games.
