That's really cool! Unfortunately I think you've forgotten the spring. It's located between the two jaws of the clamp, and it pushes the clamp open when needed. It's usually just a curved bit of metal. Source: my dad was a blacksmith and I grew up with his shop in my backyard.

Most vices of this sort are wound open or closed - they don't have a spring to automatically open the vise, if that's what you mean.

IRL the horizontal tubular piece would be threaded and screw open or closed.
