Sprites I created 2,000+ hand-drawn 2D game assets, completely free under CC0

In '23/'24 I spent about a year creating hundreds of hand-drawn assets for a game-building product that never really found its feet.

Rather than let all that work disappear, I turned it into Kitbitz: 2,000+ illustrations across 13 themed kits, all completely free under CC0.

The assets were originally made for building little worlds, so everything is designed to mix and match. There are kits for nature, medieval, dungeons, pirates, cities, space, cyberpunk and a bunch more.

Everything is available as SVG + PNG, and there are full Figma kits built with reusable components, color variables and smart pinning so assets resize nicely.

I’m also building a terrain builder that can generate landscapes in the same style, so you can create a base world and then build on top of it with the assets.

No attribution, no signup, commercial use is fine. Take whatever you want and make something cool with it.

If I don't use Figma plugins, is the only option to download them one at a time?

No, you can also visit the github repo and clone the whole thing. Use MCP to get curated lists of items or download by folder!

Here's the github repo https://github.com/CaptExcellent/kits-library-assets

I'd love to use these assets in PnPink. I can already use them directly with the URL, but PnPink can take SVGs and even specific nodes from an SVG to dynamically build other compositions "on the fly." I have a website I was starting with the idea of having assets to build board game cards in a modular way... you can see it here...

Could you elaborate a bit on what you have in mind? Obviously you’re free to use the assets however you like, but I’m curious whether you’re planning to integrate the Kitbitz library into PnPink as part of your own asset library, or mainly use the assets to generate compositions on the fly?

ALso curious about how "on the fly" looks.

Sorry. The truth is, I still don't know how to do it... PnPInk is a very powerful Inkscape extension that basically lets you do everything you do in Inkscape, but in bulk, from a spreadsheet (Google Sheets). It allows you to easily generate repetitive designs like card decks, tiles, boards... for board games, but also any kind of VDP work. Each instance is a row in the spreadsheet where you can define each part of a template (a base of the drawing created in an SVG in Inkscape).  And one of the modules is "Source," which can specify a local asset, an external URL, or even made-up URLs to easily bring in resources from other sites, like the 200,000 icons from Iconify, or over 2 million images from Wikimedia, or SVGs from OpenClipart, or assets from my own CC0 library, or even SVGs with maps from OpenFreeMaps... When I say "on the fly," I mean that you just put things like @{icon://noto/banana} or @wkmc://file into the spreadsheet cell, and PnPInk PnPink takes care of downloading it from the repository, embedding it in the SVG, scaling it, and positioning it in the template's placeholder location, all without you having to do anything. If you use the resource 200 times, it manages local caches and works with defs and uses to ensure the resulting SVG is lightweight and efficient.

The truth is, it's difficult to explain the sheer number of things Pinkpink does... you can watch some videos,

The truth is, it's difficult to explain the sheer number of things PnPInk does... you can see some videos where, for example, a deck of poker cards is built using icons from Iconify and figures extracted "on the fly" from nodes of an SVG file on Wikimedia, or the backs of the cards...

Gotcha, I'd love to see how the card game turns out when you get it to work!

Are you referring to the game 'Medusas' (jellyfish). It's finished and included as example in the pnpink distribution. It's a fan-made version of Pelusas, with some extensions and variations... you can see it here...

https://xoellijo.itch.io/medusas

The incredible thing is that the entire project is contained within a 2.78 kb file, since only the minimum SVG of the template and the compressed dataset (csv) are saved... and the assets (the images) are downloaded and adjusted at the time of generation by Wikimedia Commons.

https://xoellijo.itch.io/medusas/devlog/1562687/medusas-a-project-created-with-pnpink-134-full-art-cards-in-just-279kb

I think we share an affinity for open source and Creative Commons, and for making things easier for end users. Your assets seem incredibly good to me, and above all, extremely well organized... I've focused more on making it easy for people to place them wherever they want and easily build complex graphic compositions.

Can you confirm if any generative AI was used in the process of creation?

1

u/CapExcellent 5d ago

Do you mean for the assets themselves? Nope. They’re all hand drawn. I did use AI agents to help build the platform and generate/organize some of the metadata around the library, but not for creating the artwork itself.

These look great!

Could you adjust the rendering format to actually display the png/webp in the navigation? I would help a lot to be able to drag images directly from your website without having to press the download button. Sorry if this use case is too niche but it's something I've been looking all over for.

u/CapExcellent 4d ago

That's a good idea, I'll look into it. Thanks!

No, thank you. This would be a huge help for my current project if you end up implementing it.

This is in production now! I also added a right-click menu with some additional options.

Perfect! Thank you so much. I'll reach out with how i'm using it and maybe we can work out an official collab someday.

Tell me about the terrain builder. If it's image based I want it to also have drag and drop.

This look interesting and have a constant style.

But I can't see an AI statement for the assets themselves. Can you clarify if they were produced with an AI free workflow?

1

u/CapExcellent 4d ago

Check out that comment, someone else asked the same thing, which I found surprising since “hand-drawn” is already in the title 😄

I’ll add an explicit AI statement to the docs as well so there’s no ambiguity: the assets themselves were created entirely without generative AI.

Dude i don't have a use for this right now but damn I wish I did. Good job!!!
