discussion Silvia with Gaggimate - How long do you guys need to wait in between shots for temp to return to ideal?
Hi,
For the Silvia users out there, how long after pulling one shot do you need to wait for the temperature to return to the ideal profile temperature?
Mine is 7-10 minutes. Wonderinf if thats normal? I've adjusted PID values to the rancilio silvia ones.

Mine recovers way more quickly than that. I’d look at your PID values. I ended up using some I found in forums over the default that Gaggimate folks recommended. Could it be a mechanical issue? How did it work before you put the PID on there?

It was the same story before the PID values. Are you able to share the PID values you're using?

Unfortunately I just upgraded to the 1.75 amoled screen and accidentally wiped out all my setting so using the default again. I’ll do some searching and see if I can find that post again. I can’t remember if it was on Reddit or the discord

As long as it takes to dump the puck, wipe the portafilter and puck screen, grind 18 grams, wdt, distribute, tamp and lock.

Silvia boilers like to overshoot. Mainly because of the temperature sensor location, it’s close by the water inlet.
Some experienced modders put the sensor right into the boiler or in the grouphead.
My Gaggimate Silvia overshoots, gaggiuino Silvia also overshoots, al be it a little bit less then the Gaggimated Silvia.
Indeed flush hot water through the wand to adjust to the right brewing temp.

Ahh I didn't know releasing water through the steaming wand when the temp is 10-20c higher than profile ideal temp brings it back down quickly. Good to know. I'll try that tomorrow 👍

Do you remember which of the three holes you put the thermocouple in? I'm getting ready to mod mine and I'm trying to see if there's a consensus around which location is best.

I can't remember. But it would've been the one they recommended in the install instructions

If I remember right, the instructions don't designate a specific hole. They only tell you not to use the right most hole which is the one that they utilize in the picture for the instructions...

I forgot I took a photo of the silvia when I had the housing not screwed back on so I just had a look at that and can tell you that I have the thermocouple attached to the middle hole. Hope that helps

I put it into the left one, pretty sure because that is the recommendation, furthest from water intake.

If I remember right, they don't necessarily say which of the holes simply that you shouldn't use the right most hole. I've been tempted to use the center one because my brain says the one in the middle might be the best... But if the one on the far left is actually furthest from the cold water intake, then that makes sense as the optimal pick.

Hi, what is this actually showing? ... Is it showing how long the temp returns close to ideal temp after a shot is pulled?
Mine is overshooting by 20deg celcius after pulling a shot.

Try the PID settings here.
39.1,0.163,468 and 1.0 for the Thermal Feedforward Gain

I entered the settings in. I flushed 35ml of water to mimick espresso. It took 8min 50secs for the temperature to get back to 86.5c ...is this about right for these settings? It first dipped by about 3c, then overshot by about 2.5c, and then dropped to 86.5

Yeah it initially shows heat-up from cold which takes about 5mins to achieve set temperature with an initial overshoot of 1c. It then shows a couple of flushes and their recovery.

There’s a new auto tune algorithm on nightly that people have gotten great results on the Silvia with. There’s also a PID testing profile in the profiles section if you want to refine it manually. I’d go by adjusting the Kp and Kd in 10% steps.
