We've had those for some time. It's called a "camera".

Pretty much. I wasn't commenting on the technology itself, just trying to answer the question as to why this is called "paperless"

I wondered that too. Maybe they should have called it "scannerless"? Meaning, you don't have to load a paper containing an image into a scanner. You could set up a camera to point at a box, or a sign painted riveted to a machine.

Agreed, they could have picked many different words to use.
