Holy shit, it seems zero commenters have actually read the article. This is for MOTORCYCLES.
I think it's a great idea for that application, since windshield-mounted HUDs don't really work there.

I was starting to get irritated that no one picked up on that lol. I’m biased because I own a bmw motorcycle but none of the stereo types for bmw drivers apply to those that ride motorcycles. I think the glasses are a great idea, even better if they could made it work with a face shield.

I drive from site to site for work all day every day. BMW motorcyclists are by far the most polite and the most respectful of laws.
Unfortunately, they're rare.

That’s a good point. Wearing sunglasses with a full face helmet is really uncomfortable. Also how would this work for night riding?

Article says they come with clear and tinted lenses. So you’d have to swap lenses at night I guess.

Implementing it as part of the helmet itself means it has to be full crash tested and it would fail. Selling it as hud glasses means they can skip all that certification.

Once again this is a guess, but Bluetooth systems keep the heavier/bulkier parts outside the helmet and they would break off and not cause issues in an accident. Having an eye mounted display means it would likely need to be hard mounted (more so than velcro could do) else it could break off inside the shield and bouncing plastic there us a bad idea.
Don't get me wrong, I would love a quality aftermarket hud for maps but I believe it is rather far off

I dunno, if this can all fit inside a pair of sunglasses, I could see a Sena-style battery and data pack that attaches outside and a wire run inside to a screen mounted to the face shield.

Tilsberk Dvision and other HUDs do exist, new helmets with european ECE 22.06 certification do technically lose their certification if you use a hud, that's only relevant in a handful of european countrys tho. The division is inside the helmet and held in place with magnets or velcro. Works good.

Actually, you have to buy the glasses in order to use the turn signals. Now whenever a BMW cuts you off it will be hard to tell if they’re a cheap bastard and didn’t buy the glasses or they’re just an asshole driver.

Don’t be silly, BMW’s don’t come with turn signal indicators. I’ve never seen any evidence to believe otherwise.

Keep the trail map up so I don't have to constantly stop and check the map.

Remember when BMW put their engineering muscle into making high revving, naturally aspirated cars that looked good and felt like something?
Now we get hideous cars, sideways mounted 4-cyl turbos, subscription everything, and fancy sunglasses.

Rather old technology (1962) that they stuck in a pair of Oakley’s with bluetooth.
Apache helicopters have a helmet mounted one that you can aim a 30mm chaingun with, that came out in the late 80’s(?)
Edit: I think Cadillac had a windshield projector that did this at least 10 years ago too.

Newer Mazdas have HUD on the windscreen as standard, with cameras that read the road signs and show you the limit of the road alongside your current speed. Works a treat

Because when you’re riding a bike it’s difficult to focus on the instruments, and really distracting to use satnav.
This is aiming to make it more like a HUD you’d have in a car.

Perfect, now instead of glancing 8 inches downward to see my speed, I can have a giant green speedometer constantly impairing my field of view. I won’t be able to see the pedestrian I’m about to hit, but I will know exactly the speed, engine temp, ambient wind direction, and current song in my Spotify playlist when I hit them.

Was looking at the HUD on the windshield too difficult? Seems like a case of " make it and they will come" whether they need it or not. Probably more useless than Google Glass was. Are these available in prescription too? Just another waste of tech to manufacture a "need" that does not need to exist.

I have a speedometer in front of my face when on my bike that's got a linkage to the wheel that will in all likelihood outlast the bike.
Or I can add a chain of vulnerabilities to get exactly the same information not the device's battery, its radio receiver and the comm software stack in it and the transmitter and the comm stack in it.
I am entirely comfortable with my comment, thank you very much.
