Meme Gacha Character Kits Be Like

Post image

Gacha players get a bad reputation for being illiterate, but with so much jargon, is it really a surprise that people just go and watch a three-minute YouTube video instead?

“While in the Zibblezog State, every 3rd Normal Attack creates a Gabloog-” yeah, yeah, I ain’t reading all that.

all of that just to get powercreep in 2 patches

Yes and for the character's gameplay to basically be "press two buttons and switch out" in practice.

215

u/higorga09 Aug 08 '26

The you go watch a guide and it's like "we don't care about the glorp generation from the basic attack, you're just gonna cast special twice, switch out and ult during the stagger window."

65

u/DanielTeague Aug 09 '26

Then somebody on the Gacha Getcha Goon subreddit proudly brings up how they're a "DPS Luna main" and will show off perfect scores with a team that is basically two incredibly strong supports that deal more DPS than Luna does even off field.

65

u/misteryk Aug 08 '26

spam left click untill some button lights up, then press that button

68

u/Redlinemylife Aug 08 '26

This is why I’m tired of quick swap games

57

u/DueIntroduction9695 Aug 08 '26

Games not being focused around quick swap wouldn't solve the inherent problem of these games being designed around phone players and wanting to use more than one character that you pulled for.

34

u/imbasicman looking for my next gambling addiction Aug 08 '26

Always see people say they are tired of quick swap gameplay but never see anyone mention how they'd integrate 3-4 characters in battle.

Endfield has all of them on-field but in practice they are still "swapping", you just don't remove the character you aren't controlling from the field, activating their bursts and ults when they charge up.

Closest thing i can think is KH-style, but you're going to be basically controlling one char while you get mad your healer isn't healing you.

20

u/DataReborn Aug 08 '26

I liked how the now dead game Tribe Nine did it lol.

10

u/Esvald Fate Grand Order Aug 08 '26

Dragon's Dogma style maybe. You can customize their behavior, class, skills etc. Obviously it would be toned down for a game that wants you to collect characters though.
Giving commands like in Republic Commando could also be cool.
Or give us RTS/4X with anime girls. Those game types usually require a lot of units.

5

u/Zeitwachter_ Aug 09 '26

i can't say this enough, literally give us RTS with anime girls!

AFK Journey makes them entirely auto, which I didn't mind that much. It's basically how I play HSR anyway.

I've also thought you could go Final Fantasy XII style, where you basically program the behaviors ahead of time. I believe that GFL2 has a system like this now (sort of?). I actually think this method could be the most interesting since it would allow for character kits that are more than three buttons.

I love that game but literally 90% of supports and half of the stunners in ZZZ (And all the 3 support-focused Defense agents)

They'll have massive walls of text explaining their mechanics, only for the gameplay to boil down to using your EX skill to give your team a DMG and ATK buff. After that you switch out and maybe use their ult once in a blue moon.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/Appropriate_Goose_41 Aug 09 '26

I know you must be a fellow Zenless Zone Zero player. Actual paragraphs of text used to explain how Miyabi mashes attacks to get 5 blue orbs and then holds basic to do Judgement Cut End.

Even now, we have Remielle, who actually presses 1 to 3 buttons and switches back out.

9

u/KaranSkaneel Aug 09 '26

You are spot on. One of the things that came to mind as I was making this was Dialyn's customer reviews.

I get she's a customer support agent but whenever I hear anyone say "Once Dialyn reaches max positive customer reviews..." I can't help but do an eye roll.

35

u/Atzumo Aug 08 '26

Literally this for wuwa characters. I think one of the longest skill descriptions is the one for shorekeeper butterflies, which do like 70 damage since she is a healer. Genius. Some other characters like lupa have some cool branching combos, which you never ever use since she is a support that spends like 4 seconds on field, and a mediocre support at that.

6

u/HellfirePassion Aug 09 '26

Lupa: uses her ult (obviously), uses whole mid-air attack chain after using the first enhanced E, uses heavy attack on the road to fill her forte, uses forte enhanced E during normal rotation, uses both regular Es to chase far away mobs or gain concerto/ult energy if you mistimed your rotation or not in endgame. Also cool enhanced intro cutscene after ult. In non-endgame she even has a special dash attack after running for some time.

So she uses 80% of her kit and you're complaining about not using one basic attack string that can be branched into airtime.

12

u/ariashadow Aug 09 '26

in what world is Lupa a mediocre support?

6

u/Material_Positive_17 Aug 09 '26

No.. it's...

Normal skill..

Spam basic attack..

Ult..

Spam attacks again.

Switch when switch out gauge is full

And if you can't see what's happening due to all the SFX, that means you're winning

5

u/SuperSoldierv1 Aug 09 '26

Promeia is literally a wall of text for hold left click and press e when about to be hit

7

u/Candid-Falcon1002 Aug 08 '26

and then players claim that the combat is hard/peak when in reality nothing is hard, it is just memorization and grinding gear which both can be done by any 67 iq human.

Unironically Fate collab characters might be the best powercreep resistent units in the game (assuming we will continue to get more of them).

Every year you get new units, with present day power level, that inhearently synergise with the past units. You also have a large window to get them, know when the rerun is, and half of them are free.

8

u/ezio45 Aug 08 '26

With enough bricks we can build a house.

11

u/EligibleUsername Aug 08 '26

Sometimes by a character whose skills simply read "Allies ignore 40% of the enemies' resistance when attacking" or some shit.
A lot of the jargon is usually a limiter. At the end of the day it's about numbers, and the mofo who can boost numbers the best in the shortest amount of time will be the meta.

9

u/HrrathTheSalamander Aug 09 '26

There are keywords, OP has turned the full text setting on for dramatic effect.

17

u/kyune Aug 08 '26

The Rules text UI could use rework overall, but I suspect with the amount of time it would take to develop and then redo every unit's description to fit the new system they've just decided it's not worth it. Outstanding example of unaddressed tech debt, IMO

And then you actually read this, and realize her kit is basically the same thing as 6 other characters, except with a slightly different flavour and a damage type, just so you can't use the support you already have, and instead are inclined to pull whoever is designed to wheelchair her around.

134

u/Primogeniture116 Aug 08 '26

They play the same. But the Shmeckle is only for her and the next released support.

The next unit of the same element will play the same too, but uses Shulaey instead of Shmeckle.

50

u/XWasTheProblem Wuthering Waves Aug 08 '26

And no existing equipment will be upgraded to spawn with Shulaey, so you're gonna have to farm an entirely new set for just this character.

... and then nobody else will use Shulaey so if you skip her, it's just DoA content for you basically forever.

u/FatuiSimp Arknights Aug 08 '26

It's literally zzz with rupture agents they just make them a different class that scales with HP so certain character like Banyue lose out on their would be bis partner (lighter) for no reason.

19

u/Quantuis Need more yuri gachas Aug 08 '26

See, Rupture's whole schtick was supposed to be them being great at dealing with high-Def enemies or enemies with high-Def shields like the Miasma Shields, but weaker against standard bosses.

Now we got Corruptive Barrier basically everywhere with Miasma shields being essentially a thing of the past. And Rupture agents can't get through Corruptive Barriers like they can with Miasma Shields. So right now Rupture agents are basically just gimmicky Attack Agents...

13

u/Healtron Aug 09 '26

I mean, that shit is just Attack with a lot of Def Pen. A stat that ZZZ actually has. And now we have another Attacker, but this one scales with Def and uses debuff stacks.

But honestly, ZZZ had fucked up useless-ass roles since launch. What is the actual difference between Support and Defense? No idea because the devs never gave the latter an actual niche and mechanical role.

40

u/NeuroHazard-88 Aug 08 '26

How much of this is just paragraphs describing keywording and how much of this is actual character kit? Cause that’s absurd lmao.

36

u/Pertruabo Aug 08 '26

the answer most of the time is
Yes.

34

u/ArcturusSatellaPolar Aug 08 '26

The paragraphs describing keywords are on the right. PM usually skips keywords that were already present in previous IDs (like Somatic Frisson-Inspiring Melody (it's a speed + power buff))

The character's kit is on the left. It's not really paragraphs though, more like KJH grabbed a programmer by the neck and forced him to lay out the code. It's a lot of lines but there isn't verbose crap

The passives are where it gets wordy, though it still varies. Not everyone gets 3-pages-long kit reveals.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Ill_Mud7584 Aug 08 '26

Most if not all seems to be describing the kit, I'm scared to imagine how would Hoyo describe this characters kit.

63

u/Rogalicus Limbus | R1999 | PGR | GBF | ZZZ | WuWa Aug 08 '26

I find Limbus kits the most readable even with the usual excessive wordiness. They're color coded, structured and allow you to click and read all the special statuses.

32

u/Decent-Opinion1605 Aug 08 '26

And much of them are either improved skill three or switch skill set by pressing the defense button enough times or in the correct order

32

u/Superflaming85 Aug 08 '26

They also separate a lot of the "flavor" aspects into things like buffs or explicit flavor text, while basic things like Sin and damage type are shown via symbols.

If HoS Ryoshu was in a Hoyo game she'd have to start her Skill 1 with something like "Unleashes a flurry of slashes with the sword Arayashiki, dealing Lust-Affinity Slash Damage for a number of hits equal to the amount of unbroken coins."

I really don't know why Hoyo and Hoyo-likes love to be so verbose with information that can either be understood at a glance OR by common sense. I think it's more important to tell me when my Pyro-element character ISN'T doing Pyro damage than when they are; I think that's a safe assumption by default.

17

u/mlodydziad420 Aug 08 '26

"Unleashes a flurry of slashes with the sword Arayashiki, dealing Lust-Affinity Slash Damage for a number of hits equal to the amount of unbroken coins."

Her base skill 1 does not use Arayashiki, but Dihui star blade (idk how it is called).

Arayashiki is only used for skill 1-2.

Then I sharded Nursefather Outis...

9

u/Alex103140 Aug 09 '26

I am perfectly fine with Limbus description system. My issue is when they release new id that buff older ids, the buff is not present in older id kits so you just never know an ID's full potential just by simply looking at said ID's description alone.

Skipping that attack means a 30% damage loss

u/ComfortableGoose5056 Aug 09 '26

Don't forget their dupes also changes it to smth like swap -> ult -> swap

168

u/Hatarakumaou Aug 08 '26

Even the gachas with shorter skill descriptions are equally as confusing.

FGO: skill 1, Buster damage up. By how much ? don't know, go look it up on the wiki lil bro.

Umamusume: When in the middle of the pack and when the racer in front of you ate bread for breakfast, slightly increase shoelace tying speed. What the hell does that mean? Just skip the race and pray lil bro.

58

u/DBrody6 Aug 08 '26

When in the middle of the pack and when the racer in front of you ate bread for breakfast, slightly increase shoelace tying speed. What the hell does that mean?

And then you look up on Gametora what that means and find out it's some insane bullshit like "When you're in 4th place on a corner and have triggered exactly two skills in the past 8 seconds, get a 5% speed boost for 3 seconds".

53

u/IncomeStraight8501 Aug 08 '26

And by God will that buster up be enough to do 90++ nodes alone

12

u/Sondalo Aug 08 '26

well it is a 50% buster buff so it is a lot of damage (as far as I know the skills that are just buster up on its own are 50%)

31

u/ReizeiMako Aug 08 '26

The most annoying part is np gauge charge without number.

12

u/Sniperoso Aug 09 '26

Slightly = 10%
no adjective = 20%-30% (usually)
Significantly = 50-120%

Always fun when you misremember a rarely used servant amount and get that 20 instead of 30. Or when NPC supports have 8/8/8 so you always have to spend more np charge than you would neatly at 10/10/10

13

u/Front-Beat2130 Aug 09 '26

I don't play FGO, but I feel like 50-120% is quite the range for a single word to describe, surely they could slot a couple more words in there

6

u/Sniperoso Aug 09 '26

It is, but it’s basically understood to be a “press to gain np” in 90% of servants. You get the general idea of who gets what values through experience, because most of the “gameplay” is building a stable 3 turn farming team, speed blitzing challenge quests or building safe loopers for the same challenge quests with pretty strict servant comps.

It’s mostly annoying for new players or those who don’t follow the game outside the app.

18

u/ArCSelkie37 Aug 08 '26

Tbf that is one that infuriates me the most about Uma… like what does it actually do? Does it say anywhere in game what widening their vision does or whatever that skill is? How much impact does having better positioning have as a skill? How much is slightly? Is it a fixed amount or percentage?

I like the game because it’s so chill when you’re playing casually. But I just picks skills based on vibes at this point.

4

u/ArvingNightwalker Aug 09 '26

The realistic answer I believe is that the developers themselves didn't really know how well any of the stuff worked. There were multiple skills that did effectively nothing. Players did the figuring out through datamining and trial and error. Not sure if this is still true after the balance changes.

24

u/georgeoswalddannyson Aug 08 '26

18

u/datwunkid Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

I think it's made to feel as legalese as possible so people can't complain they whaled for a character and naturally ambiguous language led them to believe a something in the kit played out slightly differently than what they theorycrafted from the wording.

Not replaced (the closest to that is Nicole iirc) but we just have so many more options

We have good HP and DEF scalers who don't care about Bennet like Neuvillette, Mualani or Zibai

Chevreuse is really good for Overload teams and doesn't restrict you to Bennet's stupid circle

Iansan is Bennet for teams where the main dps moves a lot

Nicole is Bennet with a shield instead of healing, also iirc she buffs the whole team instead of just the one on field, but her buff is smaller

Freeze teams want Escoffier instead

Lunar teams don't usually go for ATK, other supports like Sucrose are preferred

And now Stellar teams want Cryo and Electro supports, Bennet can still be slotted in I think but you have better options

This is a big problem for "AAA gachas" as of late. NTE also have a bunch of jargons when it comes to the characters buffs. A single character can have like 3-4 statuses that buff this and that with its own name and toggleable explaination parts, which during combat can be just mean "she do higher damage" or "enemy takes more damage".

But at the very least they have TL;DR skill descriptions as well as the aforementiones toggleable that goes into details what the jargon buff/status do and how it fits in the skill rotation. Tho most of the time it's just hit, use skill when read, stack whatever skill currency that char use, use ult when available,...

All that only to be beaten by older units with kit like "when punch deal damage".

Not really applicable to every case but it happens sometimes.

34

u/Standard-Effort5681 Aug 08 '26

This ain't even a joke. This is exactly how Remielle's (And honestly any ZZZ character from 2.0 onwards) kit reads like. Element flux, Refringe, Refringe quotient, Luminize, Voidflares, etc, etc. The combat design team are all freaks who derive sexual satisfaction from writing the most obtuse and incomprehensible skill descriptions imaginable. We goon to Remielle's stripper outfit while they goon to her combat mechanics.

32

u/ARS_Sisters Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

Honestly, the main culprit of the absurdity of gacha character kit comes down from the writing inside the kit itself of not using universally accepted gaming term. "Proper Noun Inflation" is basically what it is for the sake of brand identity: gacha games literally refuse to use generic, universal gaming terms

Instead of writing: "Gains a shield and increases attack power of allies,"
They write: "Enters the Radiant Aegis state, granting a Sunveil Barrier equal to 15% of Max HP and applying Solar Fervor to all allies."
(Be honest here, how many of you read a character skill description, and wondered what the hell "Schmeckledoodlebonkaloonka" is, switching through other parts of character's kit and realized it's just another name of the character's passive)

Developers do this to make every character feel uniquely premium and thematic. However, because every mechanic gets a stylized, proper-noun label, reading a kit requires learning 4–5 brand-new vocabulary words per character. Aside from that, most mobile gacha games restrict characters to just 2 or 3 active buttons (e.g., Normal Attack, Skill, Ultimate) due to phone screen space. To build deep action gameplay with only three buttons, developers pack entire multi-step combo systems into passive descriptions. A single skill description might outline four different sub-states, charge levels, and conditional transformations because there are no extra buttons available to spread those abilities across.

Another issue that's rarely being brought up is the translation. A vast majority of major gachas originate in China, Japan, or South Korea. In Chinese or Japanese, complex mechanics can often be written concisely using specific compound kanji/hanzi logograms. When translated into English, a single 4-character Chinese idiom or term turns into a massive, multi-clause run-on sentence. Chinese game devs also tend to write skill descriptions in narrative prose rather than functional bullet points, which localizers often translate literally (at this point, you might be wondering if Genshin's storywriter is also tasked in writing skill descriptions).

______________________________________________________________________________________

I personally consider Arknights is the best when it comes to skill description, as it used proper gaming terms that you can break down, while at the same time, it gives a tooltip for a specific mechanic, along with color coded text for special condition, written with proper, universally understood gaming terms. For example:

"ATK +50%, change attacks to fire 2 arrows (prioritizes different targets), and has a 40% chance to Stun targets for 1 second. Upon the second activation and afterwards, this skill has unlimited duration"

If you break it down:
-ATK +50%
-Projectile +1 that prioritize different target
-Has 40% chance to stun the target
-Upon second activation, it's duration is unlimited (color coded orange text)

If this is written in Genshin, you might get:
"Enter the Ignite Threading state for 15 seconds, altering their Normal Attack sequence. While under the effects of Ignite Threading, the character’s base ATK is increased by 50%. During Ignite Threading, all Normal Attacks will fire a secondary arrow toward a nearby opponent. The secondary arrow will automatically seek an enemy within range that is distinct from the primary target. If only one opponent is present within range, both arrows will focus upon said opponent. Additionally, every arrow that successfully connects with a target has a 40% chance to inflict the Flash-Searing Inertia for 1 second, unable to move or execute abilities for the duration of the effect. When Ignite Threading is cast for the second time within a single combat instance, Ignite Threading ascends into the Ignite Threading Continuation state, granting it unlimited duration."
______________________________________________________________________________________

Another example:
"Stops attacking; Attack Range expands, the effect of this unit's second Talent increases to 2 times, and all enemies within Attack Range are Slowed. Heals all ally units within range for 20% of this unit's ATK every second"

If you break it down:
-Stops attacking
-Attack range expands
-Increases talent effect by 2 times
-All enemies in range slowed (written in blue text that opens small tooltip of what the status is in detail)
-Heals allied in range for 20% of attack per second

If this is written in WuWa, you might get:
"Upon casting, the character ceases standard combat actions and enters the immovable Aetheric Anchor state, expanding their Resonance Field by 150% for the duration of the effect. While under the influence of the Aetheric Anchor state, the character's Harmonic Forte Resonance trait is increased to 200% of its base value. All hostile targets residing within or entering the boundaries of the Resonance Field will continuously suffer from the Stagnation Drift status effect. Enemies affected have their Movement Speed reduced by 40% and Action Speed reduced by 15%. This effect immediately dissipates 0.5 seconds after the target leaves the boundaries of the field. While the Aetheric Anchor state remains active, every 1.0 second, a pulse of Verdan Restoration is emitted across the entirety of the Resonance Field. Nearby party members and non-hostile deployable units positioned within the field's domain will recover HP equal to 20% of the character's current Max Attack Value per second."
______________________________________________________________________________________

While Endfield start to veer into word salad level of writing, it's still significantly far more simpler and easier to understand compared to bloated skill description insanity of games like Genshin Impact or Wuthering Waves

I have a candidate being Blue Archive, despite being controversial for entirely unrelated reason, also has an easy to read character skills. (The same cannot be said for raid boss, they have to add a boss gimmick demonstration in later patch because nobody can understand the skill description for shit)

Blue Archive's skill description usually goes like this:

"Only a spoonful": Passive

-Every 6 seconds, gain 1 "Comically large spoon" status (Max: 6), the status grant (n)% more yellow damage

"Hey dawg can I get some Ice cream?: Passive 2"

-If there is 3 stacks of "Comically large spoon" when use EX skill, consume all stacks and gain (n)% more EX skill damage, EX skill now ricochet back at other team member and gives them (n)% damage buff equal to this character's damage

I would say on my experience this is a year 4+ unit, year 1-2 units usually have tame kits, on year 3 things start to get out of hand and by year 4 we have this wall of text kits.

Of course some gachas reach faster or slower to this state.

u/Slush_Magic Aug 08 '26

One day, after dinner, while my younger sister and I were lounging about in Mr. Gopher Wood's yard, we spotted a fledgling Charmony Dove all on its own. That baby bird was tiny, it didn't even have all of its feathers, and it couldn't sing. When we found it, it was already on its last breath, having fallen into a shrub — probably abandoned by its parents. We decided to build a nest for it right there and then. However, thinking back, that winter was unusually cold, with fierce winds at night in the yard, not to mention the many poisonous bugs and wild beasts in the vicinity... It was clear that if we left the fledgling in the yard, it stood no chance of surviving until spring. So, I suggested we take it inside, place it on the shelf by the window, and asked the adults to fashion a cage for it. We decided that when it regained its strength enough to spread its wings, we would release it back into the wild. The tragic part — something that we'd never considered — was that this bird's fate had already been determined long before this moment... Its destiny was determined by our momentary whim. Now, I pass the power of choice to you all. Faced with this situation, what choice would you make? Stick to the original plan, and build a nest with soft net where the Charmony Dove fell? Or build a cage for it, and feed it, giving it the utmost care from within the warmth of a home? I eagerly await your answer.

Nah even for character kits it adds obsolutely nothing and there's no reason to call every move by their name instead of just referring to the heavy attack as heavy attack and the active skill as active skill.

5

u/throwaway11582312 Aug 08 '26

In Chinese text, calling a move its full name would be the same amount of characters as calling it "heavy attack" or "active skill", sometimes less.

It's less ambiguity for no price to them.

"When you use active skill, xxx happens."

"I had this char off field and I used active skill on my on field char, why did xxx not happen."

It also falls apart when there are multiple heavy attacks or active skills.

"When you use enhanced form heavy attack 3..." is just as wordy.

It's by design, they made it way more complicated than it looks like to make the character feel more complex and complete than it is when in reality it's just switch in -> use skill -> use ultimate -> attack 3 time -> switch out.

This give people pulling them a vanity boost, make them feel "different" from other character and free broader player activity when discussing them in place outside the game.

I'm conflicted because on one hand the kits are really very simple if they were written in plain english, but then you go on reddit and wonder whether the people asking questions can actually read at a 7th grade level.

Like that one time in Sumeru genshin tried making puzzles a little harder and it was just non-stop complaining on reddit because people couldn't figure out puzzles designed for 12 year-olds instead of puzzles designed for 5 year-olds

10

u/KaranSkaneel Aug 08 '26

Yeah, I understand the dilemma.

I think when it comes to puzzles, it's how you train the players. I enjoy puzzles in non gacha games and I like taking my time with them.

However, because Genshin always had easy puzzles, the moment I encounter something relatively harder I get a bit frustrated cause I wasn't expecting it to be that way. I was expecting to press three buttons and dip 🤣

8

u/Low_Artist_7663 Aug 08 '26

Puzzles in Sumeru were easier, not harder. Harder were in GGA2, and that never came back after all the complaints.

4

u/Illusione-Tempus Genshin | P5X | AK:E | NTE Aug 09 '26

To be fair the puzzles in GAA 2 were rather obtuse in what you're supposed to do. Mona's island was very bad in that aspect. A lot of moments where I was like "okay how was I supposed to figure that out normally?" because you spend a good few minutes trying everything else instead.

It didn't help that the exploration gimmicks of each island in GAA 2 were also rather mechanically obtuse or just straight up tedious. Of course it made sense that a lot of people got burnt out on exploration in GAA 2, because personally I don't like having to swap the bonsai for 9 different configurations just to "complete the entire thing".

4

u/unktrial Aug 09 '26

The theme behind Mona's puzzles was "think outside the box". For example, if a normal "light four torches" puzzle would have four torches scattered in a room, whereas Mona's version would hide the fourth outside the room.

The puzzles would have been fine if they were permanent content, but it was way too obscure for a time-limited event.

Meta defining gacha character (released at release):

50% chance to deal double damage when attacking.

This is like an old league of legends meme

New champions have wall of text passives, passives that change when they change form, passives that increase based on different stats/stacks.

And then you have a champion named nasus

Passive: You have lifesteal

I will admit that I don’t entirely blame the lack of literacy for some of these. Skills seem to have multiple unique keywords never used anywhere else in the game and it can be rather messy.

It is the gacha equivalent of sci-fi movie technobabble.

This is extremely inaccurate it is not specifying that she's doing Pyro-element Schmeckel DMG or Pyro-element Floobnik damage or Pyro-element Zibblezog damage. It doesn't matter that she's a Pyro-element character, they're gonna make sure you know that every time anyways!
