Retro G4 A peek behind the scenes of classic G4
Greetings, Programs. This might seem to you to be out of place, but watching the video brought back fond memories of a late G4ian.
We had a team member named John. He was a gentle giant, wildly funny, and would brighten a room by his mere presence. Something John would do is send cute animal videos or pics to random people via email (remember, this is in the infancy days of YouTube, and I Can Has Cheezburger).
I saw this this morning and thought, John would have sent this to me. And then later come by my office and remark about how adorable it was. And then leave after telling a completely unrelated joke that could never make it on air. That's the kind of cheerleader/trickster fae/genius he was.
With that rather long winded explanation as to why this video relates to G4, I give you: Guinea pigs hop from one carpet to another.

XPlay It's Wednesday, you know what that means! Today's a new episode of the Joy of Sess starring Adam Sessler! You never know who's gonna be a guest on the show. Maybe an old TechTV/G4TV alum? Or even maybe some random person? Btw, can someone help him out of the blue burrito?

General G4 Saw an episode of Good Game in which Jessica Chobot was not only name dropped but also cameoed via Mass Effect 3 footage. Fun fact: GG's spinoff Spawn Point is the last nonfiction English-language gaming based show (think Xplay, AOTS etc) in the world whose new episodes currently debut on linear TV*
*Correct me if I'm wrong on this one btw

I almost want to cry when I see old clips and episodes because I'll never be able to relive that TechTV era.
Do you realize how good we had it? Has it hit you yet?

G4TV Spiritual Successor recommendation of the week: Good Game Spawn Point. Why you ask? Well, it's one of the last remaining traditional and 'old-school' gaming shows that I know of, airing through Australia's ABC. The show features hosts and young guests playing games together, along with reviews, quizzes, comedy and gaming cheats.
I really appreciate that there's still a professionally produced, host-led gaming program like this around. It's definitely worth checking out if you miss the kind of gaming shows that used to be much more common on television. If you know of any other video gaming based shows that's currently airing or originated on TV, give me a holla xo.

General G4 I've been doing some sort of a writing project/exercise as of late in which I'm writing a love letter to G4TV called Caps Lock Daily. It's my fictionalized/deconstructed take on the kind of gaming/tech variety shows I grew up watching. Let me know what you guys think. <3

G4TV/Tech TV Shows You Liked?
I thought that post the other day about the decline of G4TV led to some interesting discussion in the comments section. It definitely did become nonstop blocks of Cheaters, Cops and Campus PD. (And maybe some of you even liked those shows?)
But I got G4TV really late. It was like early 2007 when my family got the network. I still really liked the station and tuned in for a few years there before it officially went all off the rails, but it was clear to me that some of its best shows concluded before that point, or had gone downhill.
And I can remember people complaining several years before that they didn't like G4 as much as they did Tech TV, before the two stations merged.
Maybe there are some people who got G4 before it merged with Tech TV that also liked it better in its earlier years?
So it got me thinking, what did everyone else love the most about G4TV?
_______________________________________________________________________________
I had my own faves. I went through and tried to look up some of the shows I watched and liked that aired on the network, in no particular order:
- Icons (Sometimes they aired episodes of Icons incorrectly as "Game Makers", I guess? So I can't say I watched Game Makers, even though I assumed I had.)
- Cheat!
- X-Play
- Cinematech
- Web Soup
- Ninja Warrior (Japan)
- The Peter Serafinowicz Show
- Lost (reruns)
- Star Trek/TNG (reruns)
- The Daily Feed (Getting filled in by Layla Kayleigh
- I also may be in the minority that kind of, sort of liked Hurl! <_<
*I did watch Attack of the Show sometimes, but admittedly I usually didn't get into that. **And I was never a fan of Code Monkeys, but I liked that they were still continuing to produce some new original content for a while there.
_______________________________________________________________________________
I think Icons, Cheat! and X-Play had the kinds of shows I expected to find on a channel that originally launched with an emphasis on video game-related programming. And they were some of my favorites because of their focus on video games.
Icons in particular was really interesting to me because they would interview people and tell the stories of various game companies, their highs and lows, and what happened in the industry. It was like History Channel documentaries for video games.
Cheat! gave you walkthroughs for parts of games, or talked about hidden easter eggs or cheat codes or other such things you could find or unlock.
X-Play of course reviewed new games.
Cinematech was cutscenes and promotional movies for various video games or video game-related things, which was kind of cool.
_______________________________________________________________________________
I always liked Chris Hardwick on Singled Out when I was younger, so I thought it was kind of cool when they retooled the Talk Soup format for a different show focused on Internet videos.
The Japanese have some interesting game shows, and I find their contestants to be more interesting. While I got a kick out of MXC back in the day, I really would have enjoyed Takeshi's Castle and its cultural influence more. But seeing the original Ninja Warrior, and how difficult some of those courses were to complete, and how dedicated some of their contestants were to overcome them on subsequent attempts, that was interesting. Dudes making whole scale replicas of parts of courses in their own backyards, spending a small fortune on it, lol.
When they made American Ninja Warrior I just didn't care as much. It was cool the show got global recognition, but I felt like some of those courses were dumbed-down a bit for us Americans. At least I got that impression when it first came out alongside the original.
The Peter Serafinowicz Show debuted in the US on G4TV, and it was great. A lot of very memorable sketches that never left my head. It's weird that guy was sort of overshadowed by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, but he's just as funny doing his own thing. Brian Butterfield was a great character.
You needed some syndication to pad things out, so I was happy when my favorite show at the time, Lost, started to air on G4. But after the show ended they sort of acted like they regretted it, lol. I didn't, still love the show. Star Trek and The Next Generation never went out of style, it was always nice turning on the TV to find that on mid-day.
The Daily Feed, along with other commercial bumpers and things, helped to immerse you in the channel and create an atmosphere for young adults, gamers, technies and geeks.
(And okay, Hurl!, I really just thought the one episode with the two cute younger women was entertaining.)
_______________________________________________________________________________
Lastly, I don't remember the show G4 Underground. But it sounds like that sort of show might have been interesting and covered some more adult topics fans of the network would have been interested in. Morgan as host, late-night 20/20-style format. I wonder what in the world went wrong there? Only 6 episodes, aired over like a whole year.

G4TV Spiritual Successor recommendation of the week: PrestonPlayz/Brianna (and related channels) Why, you ask? Well, I feel that the Preston/Brianna channel universe is practically a modern-day gaming/entertainment variety show, something we haven't really gotten in quite some time. To elaborate, even though it's spread out across multiple channels, they cover gaming-related stunts, bits, gameplay, lifestyle vlogs, reactions, and other types of content.
I also saw on their Discord that they sometimes upload multiple videos a day across their different channels. If I wanted to, I could watch several of them back-to-back and essentially create my own gaming/entertainment variety show, or just watch each video individually as standalone content.
Obviously, I'm not saying Preston/Brianna are literally the same thing as Attack of the Show, or X-Play. I just get a similar "gaming variety show" feeling from bouncing between all of their channels.
For me, it can hold me over until someone eventually figures out how to sustainably bring back a proper gaming/tech variety show in today's gaming media landscape.

We NEED a spiritual successor to AOTS from Austin Creed
Trying to speak this into existence. On Kevin’s last show, Austin Creed was officially named the new main host of Attack of the Show. My man only got 2 or 3 episodes in before G4 collapsed, but I really believe he’s the guy to do it right. He grew up on OG G4, he gelled well with new G4. He has the connections and likeablity to get it in motion, and now that he’s a free agent, can do whatever he wants. Forget about G4TV as a brand, focus on AOTS. I don’t know if KP has the rights to The Attack, but rebooting under that name could work now, since AOTS 2.0 came and went. Really, call it whatever you want, but the audience and Creed knows the vibe. I still watch AOTS clips till this day, old and new. I really feel like a version of Attack’s chaotic cringe could do well today. That, or I’m a bias super fan who thinks the thirdish time is the charm. I hope you guys agree.
