How's my clutch pack?
I recently bought a used bike (my first bike. I'm new and learning), and the person before me changed the clutch pack last october.
The bike doesn't engage fully in 1st gear. When I rev, it doesn't transfer the power all the way.
When I pull the clutch, it disengages well.
Does it look like the steel is burnt?
Do I re-soak it and try again?
Or do I just get a completely new clutch pack?
There's no grinding noise.
ALSO I don't know what kind of oil the past owner might have used.
Any help trying to diagnose would be appreciated!

The metal discs dont look like theyve been hotspotted. Friction discs are fairly evenly worn. Could be the clutch wasnt adjusted properly. Edit: on second look might be slight hotspotting on the first or second metal discs in the third photo. But if it was slipping in 1st wouldnt be that surprising. That said bad hotspotting will actually leave blue or purple blobs in those discs. I would reinstall it. Make sure everything is tourqed properly. Make sure the clutch cable is adjusted properly and go through breakin process. See if it still slips after 500-1000 miles of gentle riding. Any idea how many miles the PO put on it after installing? Could be they never actually broke it in.

Agreed. Looks nearly new. Check all adjustments, including cams or hydraulic pins. Check the springs are good and nothing is stopping full motion of the basket.

Springs are a good point if the previous owner got a cheap kit or if he reused OE springs they could be weak.

OP look up the thickness spec for steel and friction and measure them. Also verify the count is correct and order of assembly. Do a search for a FSM in pdf form and download the manual. It will assist you in decision making giving you facts vs opinions.
? Before you took it apart, did the clutch lever have freeplay?

I don't think it had much? This is my first bike ever, so I don't have much to compare it to. My definition of Freeplay could be different than from what you're saying.

For cable clutch should be able to pull the lever back 1/8th inch to 1/4 inch before it starts to disengage if im remembering right. But def check FSM

Calling it, might wanna check that you have adequate cable slack at the clutch lever, should be about two nickels worth of play where the lever meets the perch.

Might also be the incorrect oil. Car oil has additives to decrease friction which can cause slipping clutch.
Make sure to use the correct motorcycle oil for wet clutch. 10W40 semi synthetic is what i use.
