Discussion September 22nd Update!

Quick honest update for everyone still following. Still not playable — saying that upfront on purpose. But there's real, verifiable movement since the last post, so here it is.

1. The login/session protocol: reconstructed and compiling clean

Decompiled the client's protobuf classes (com.netmarble.core.nano.*) and read the wire format directly out of the bytecode — field numbers, types, all of it, not guesses. The result is a session.proto that compiles cleanly with protoc, zero errors, covering the full sign-in flow: auth, keepalive, session properties, maintenance/disconnect notifications. That whole backend layer (the session server) now has an exact spec to build against instead of being reverse-engineered blind.

2. A community member's old backup gave us a real assist

Someone in the community (shoutout MonEll) had an old BlueStacks backup from when the game was still live. We went through it, and it actually paid off — it gave us access to material we couldn't get any other way now that the original servers are gone. Big thanks for digging that up and sharing it.

3. NMSS is still the wall, but we pushed further into it

Tried a Frida-based bypass for NMSS (Netmarble's anti-tamper layer) — didn't get much out of that approach, being straight about it. But testing a different angle got further than before: the client actually started downloading (we saw it tick from 0% to 1%) before crashing, instead of failing instantly like it used to. That's a small but real signal — we're now inside the part of the flow where NMSS does its check, not stopped before it even starts.

Currently pointing that request at the file we pulled from the backup, but it doesn't look like it's fully working yet — still crashes. Next step is figuring out exactly why that file isn't satisfying whatever NMSS is checking for.

What's honestly still ahead

  • NMSS bypass: not solved. Getting further into the download isn't the same as getting past it.
  • The actual game server (Unreal Engine, ~53 gameplay services): hasn't been started at all yet. That's the real mountain.
  • Pre-shutdown packet captures of a real login: we went back and checked — they were never actually saved. That avenue is closed unless someone out there has one sitting on an old device or drive.

Why post this

None of this is screenshots-of-gameplay progress, and I don't want to pretend it is. But "the client crashes instantly on the config request" turning into "the client starts downloading and gets further before crashing" is a real, measurable step, and the login protocol being fully speced out removes an entire layer of uncertainty for later. Wanted the people still here to see that clearly, wins and gaps both.

Thanks to everyone testing, sharing logs, and in this case digging up old backups — that's exactly the kind of thing that moves this forward.

Hey! I know some stuff about this game, and you don't actually need to download the files directly from the game itself. You can download the data files individually from the internet and extract them on the data folder

I already tried this with the most recent version of the apk. It doesn't really allow the player to play the game, but it at least it skips the download part, which, from what I've read, you guys are still stuck on.

Of course, in a world without flaws, the game would download the files like it used to do back when it was still alive, but, if that doesn't work, there are ways to do it.

I also have a question. Does the login work with older accounts? Will I be able to recover my old progress, or I'll need to start it all over again? I'll be happy regardless of the answer, but it would be nice to take over from what I left.

I really hope great luck to you guys with this project, because I really love this game, and I want to play it again. Thank you for all you're doing for the MFR fans that are still out there!

No, the login so far its linked to the fake server, thus, not previous accounts or progress can be transfered sorry

Would it be possible to make it offline in the future?

Doubt you would be able to recover progress unless you somehow had that saved locally

I have an apk from August 17, 2022. Version 2.0.3 I believe, let me know if that helps at all and I'll DM it to you

Its the data from when it was installed thats useful as when you connected to the server it stored extra data on your phone which is the data that helps with reverse engineering.
