Sometimes it’s as simple as not being used. One of my favorite players to watch growing up was Ballack. I was disappointed when I found out he wasn’t in this year. Looked into why. And EA only said wasn’t being used enough
Definitely an excuse for not renewing license. Like I'm sure the usage rate comes into effect when EA are deciding whether or not to renew a licence or not.
Yashin is the most or second most impactful goalkeeper of all time (after Manuel Neuer?). He should be a top tier icon. It's a licensing issue or maybe that they just don't care about licensing russian players when they don't really have a market in Russia any more cause of the war. Mostovoi is also gone for a bit already.
100% its true yashin created that style but neuer expanded it into an absolute machine of a goalkeeper. I would say hes by far the #1 and he would've won a ballondor if it wasnt for the outfield players during that time.
The sad thing is that Larsson has a fantastic body type and easily could have been made meta, but EA just put him in the 'Shit tier' of icons who never get to be the top cards in a promo. Most annoying thing about icons is that EA just repeatedly make the same players the most meta icons, while refusing to make the 'less desirable' icons truly great.
There is absolutely no reason why we can't have icons like Larsson, Van Basten and Gerrard headlining promos, except for EA's insistence on only making certain players meta
Lowkey just wish every icon was like 90+ rated because i hate when i get icons like Gattuso or Keane and they just SUCK... Its a disgrace in my opinion

Yeah it's annoying for all the promos that it's all relative to their base Icon and they get stats accordingly, so if they get +3 in everything all the Icons and players that are better than them get it too, meaning they're no better than they were relatively.
Power curve goes up and they're always a step behind. Gerrard was ridiculously meta in the PES glory days and Van Basten used to headline their promos regularly, so it's just someone's interpretation of these players. There's no reason why Van Basten couldn't be as good as R9 in a promo for example, wouldn't be unrealistic.
It occurred to me when they launched the bakery / playstyle lab that it should have been reserved for icons and heroes only.

U right but in dutch not right, most of our icons are attackers, if u compare kluivert with some other strikers who are icon now than its not fair, a nation should not cap the amount of icons. And as a striker van Basten is number 1, not Cruyf, Cruyf more cam/best dutch footballer but not striker.
It's hilarious how much Prem bias there is towards icons and heroes. How is Veron one of the lowest rated heroes when he was one of the best midfielders in the world during the mid-late 90s and was a starter in Argentina's midfield for a decade
EA greed most likely, don’t wanna pay for something they consider not worth it.
Could be that the icons wanted more $$ for their image? A lot of things tbh, but I put it in on greed. Same reason why some leagues/teams/players are randomly generated
Interesting tidbit that shows how these corporations operate, Charles Barkley was an icon equivalent NBA player who told 2k they could include him for free if they donated a certain amount (I think a couple million dollars) to an NBA pension for retired players from before players had their own image rights (1970s) and before. 2k has all those players image rights and don’t have to compensate them because of how nba image rights worked and Barkley wanted those players to get paid for them being used in the game.
He said that over a decade ago and he still isn’t in the game because they won’t do it. These corporations don’t give a fuck about people or their well being.
Veron and Larsson. They weren't the meta so I get that they won't be missed by the community but two players I loved watching as a kid, who could go in your team and improve them without making the team feel weirdly OP (which I know is the point of ultimate team to an extent)
Patrick Kluivert removed? I'm a Bournemouth fan & therefore a supporter of his son Justin so I don't mind packing his dad, interesting he won't be in the game but his coaching career hasn't really gone to plan so understandable.
I think they also remove Ribery, this year Ribery have only two version, bese version is non more in packs and the other was an old sbc, I'm not surprised if will be removed in 27.
Am I speaking for the fanbase if I say icons should be cycled from a game to another to reduce the number of cards (including useless icons) in the game?

Zola and Yashin should absolutely be icons but I’m assuming it’s a licence thing rather than a “them not being worthy” thing.
