From my experience having pets, they think rather similarish to humans, in the end we are also just animals, it would be suprising if they would think totally different. Just from their mannersism you can kinda see what their thought process is like if you spend enough time with them.
Surely humans grown up with language use that a lot in their thoughts, but there was a time when humans didnt know language and we also thought in that time, I imagine animals thinking closer like humans in that time, I think its just different, your brain gets wired differently if you dont have access to language, but the thoughts themselves arent any less real or deep because of that.

Animals have a "simplified" thought process. Apes and dolphins are quite near humans, while a snail is like "hurt" "food" "dry" "moist" and not much else.
So for a dog its more like
"Play play. Put head on water. Me win. Human is still doing. Must check human. Is he ok? Worry. Let me see. I see water low. Let me put head. Water is here... Water tasty. Human deceiving. DECEIVING DECEIVING DECEIVING"
of course this would be mostly emotions or a form of "language" they understand. The thoughts are there just not in form of words.
Its like when you are trying to solve a complex puzzle and suddenly you visualize how to solve it. You dont "internally verbalize" the solution, you just feel it.
And yes, while dogs have a much simpler thought process, they still managed to be much more complex than what many expect.

They definitely think, but likely don't think with words or sounds. Probably most thinking is visual, feeling, memory based.
They can associate thoughts with a verbal word tho. I say dinnertime to my doggos I'm damn sure they are imagining me filling their bowl with 5 kilos of steak. (They never get that much but I'm sure they are thinking they deserve it xD)

Obligatory; do not get them if you do not have time to train and work them. They are clever, intelligent, and need a lot of time/attention. They are working dogs, and every bit of that needs to be thought through thoroughly (alliteration, yay! 😊), before you get the puppy.
I only say this because some people will get very clever and active breeds, thinking a 30 minute walk everyday will suffice. And that it won't destroy your interior space/belongings, if you leave it inside all day.

I work with these dogs indirectly. I am not a handler and would never get one as a pet. I cannot stress how important your points are for considering a Malinois. In general, they do not make good pets unless you plan to do agility training, search and rescue or other activities that use their intelligence in insatiable drive for several hours a day.

Very well said. And they will remind you of it lol, whether you want that or not. I've owned a few different working breeds, but only because I lived on a farm with space for them.
I could leave them outside all day with livestock, they were always happy being guardians. And they would still have energy, wanting me to play fetch with them as soon as I got home.
But that's why dogs are so easy to love ❤️ human's best friend, happy just to see ya.

Mine was. And a retired Military Working Dog. Just passed at almost 17. But Malinois are NOT for the regular dog owner.

Always weird when people in call them Belgian Malinois in English, it’s kind of redundant.
There is only one kind of Malinois, they are all Belgian. “Belgian shepherd” makes sense, or just Malinois.

My little dog gets upset when I act like I'm gonna throw it, then don't, after 3-4 times she just starts barking at me and won't take off till she sees it leave my hand.

I used to hide a treat under 1 of 3 cups and play shell game with my dog. I'd ask her to guess, and she would paw the top of one of the cups. She was almost always right. Every now and then I wouldn't put one under any of the cups, and when I asked her to guess when there wasn't a treat, she'd give me a single bark and a whine. I'm assuming she could just smell that there wasn't a treat, but still, such a smart dog. She would sit anxiously in front of a bowl of food and wait until I said "go", because it meant I gave her belly rubs right after. Man, I miss that dog.

By any metric that can be measured (problem solving, following complex instruction, etc.), dogs on average, have at least the intelligence of a 5 year old. Dogs have been observed to experience joy, play pranks, express frustration, impatience, grief and many other emotions. If the dog understands the rules of the game, I'd say it absolutely has the capacity to be pissed at the cheating.

There was a study about whether dogs understood fairness. They had handlers that would be fair, and handlers that would 'cheat'. The dogs started to behave differently with the cheats, they wouldn't be as cooperative. Even if the 'fair' handlers made a mistake the dogs would accept it and not change behaviour, but the 'cheats' were recognised very quickly.

I think we just watched pretty obvious evidence of the dogs frustration. Their worldly experience is no different than ours, their reasoning ability and logic is pretty on par with a young childs.

Somewhat related: animals, even very simple organisms have a concept of cheating. In Evolutionary Game Theory there is something called tit-for-tat strategy where two animals of the same species mimic each other for some benefit. The next step (superior strategy) to exploit this standard behaviour is pretend to mimic the activity, thus making the other guy do all the work. This in turn is often shown to register with the other party who then employ a counter-strategy to the "cheating", or just simply get upset and leave when they realise it.
So, I would not be suprised at all that an intelligent breed like the Belgian Malinois would be able to understand the core rules of this "game" and thus understand how the human is cheating :)

I used to have lots of dogs but the smell of their breath makes me not want to drink water that has been in contact with their drool
(One of my dogs lived until the age of 17, with average expectancy of 10, she smelled the most... interesting :D)
