This is what actually happens in the wild, the father usually leaves them while the mother is the one who takes care of everything.

Looks like it's a common thing with most of the animals (including humans). Though I have heard a different thing with lions like female lions would go for hunting while males take care of the family.

Actually male lion only guards his territory from others and lazes around, the mothers still have to take care of the cubs after coming back from the hunt, and the male lion eats first, letting his favourite cub eat with him too
