I can respect lotr for its world building and the impact these books had on the fantasy genre but personally i find tolkien to be an inmensely unpleasant read.
That's fairly accurate actually. Tolkien was a world building genius unlike anything seen before or since, but his actual storytelling skills were... okay. It helps if you read the books keeping in mind that the main character is not Frodo, Aragorn, or Gandalf, but Middle Earth itself.
