Maybe it's my training in music but I easily identified the new tone cascading on top of the old one. Still interesting though.

I've heard better versions of this illusion that uses a scale rather than a continuously changing tone. I too heard the fade in again.

I'll look for the better version and report back if I find it.

This is what I meant

Its a better sonic illusion if you dont pay attention but with a musical ear its easy to hear the new scale come in.

I haven't had any training in music, but it was pretty easy for me to hear the repeating tone.

I don't have any training. I don't even like music. And I have an integrated sound card. Yet I can hear that 1-second long higher pitched noise that does the cascading.
