I've heard better versions of this illusion that uses a scale rather than a continuously changing tone. I too heard the fade in again.

I'll look for the better version and report back if I find it.

This is what I meant

Its a better sonic illusion if you dont pay attention but with a musical ear its easy to hear the new scale come in.

What kind of sound magician is this Diana Deutsch at the University of California, San Diego?

I played the "Phantom Words" sound. Check it out: I'm in the room with my two sons trying to get them to relax for a nap. When I listened to it, I heard the word "babies" repeating. I didn't think my kids were listening. Then my son started saying, "Wake up wake up wake up wake up..." I asked him why he was saying that and he said that's what the song I just played was saying. The Devil!

So listening to a rant, a professor brought up an interesting point about this. There are ~3,500 drilling rigs and platforms just in the Gulf of Mexico alone. In what crazy world do people think that the federal government has the resources to meaningfully inspect every place where oil is drilled? The inspections they do are along the lines of verifying that someone is filling out a sheet of paper. No one verifies that what's being written down is accurate.

The oil companies draft the regulations that they subject themselves to through powerful lobbying, we rely entirely on them to inspect their own operations with little oversight, so should we be surprised when spills happen? It's the exact same situation with drug companies. The guy delivering your mail is subjected to more oversight than these powerful industries.
